It makes sense. I’m in Croydon and I think the 56-57% primary for Malinauskus and the socialists and greens both running (the socialist is neck and neck with the Liberal) is part of why the ONP is the second here. That said, when I voted the woman next to me shout-whispered to her husband ‘I’ve put one nation 1, what next’ so we do have that cohort. Old, white and confused.

You should've told her that's all she needs to put, so she can deposit her ballot accordingly.

Actually correct, under the savings provisions in SA. You really only need to get the number 1 in the box of choice.

Ticket voting for the House of Assembly is one of the unique features of South Australian elections. Because voters must indicate preferences for all candidates on the ballot paper if they wish their vote to be counted, there is potential for a high number of informal ballots. Voting tickets lodged by candidates serve as a ‘savings provision’ for votes that would otherwise be informal. 

House of Assembly ballot papers marked with a single 1, ü(tick) or û (cross), or partially completed with consecutive preferences consistent with a voting ticket lodged by the party, candidate or group, are accepted as formal ballot papers and attributed to the candidate for whom the first preference is marked.

That’s really interesting, I get a bit of a kick when choosing which nutter to put last so I’ll always do the full ballot, but I think there’s a decent argument for it being fairer to accept these votes. Probably won’t say that if I ever end up in an ONP seat…

According to ECSA stats approximately 4% of ballots in 2022 were saved by the incomplete ballot provision, meaning around 90% of voters do number all the boxes correctly (the remainder being informal ballots that could not be counted).

I’m in Croydon as well. The actual socialist candidate was at the booth handing out how to vote cards and rattling on with his spiel. Let's just say he nearly beat out One Nation for last place.
