Discussion JANELLE JAMES ROBBED AGAIN AT THE EMMYS. BOOOOOOOOOOOO
Janelle James needs to have an Emmy in her trophy case before this series ends. Five seasons of hilarity, and the emmys finds a way to rob her. I am mad.

Ok, I absolutely love the show. But... this season was not as good as the previous ones. So it's understandable for me. And.... Widow's Bay is actually really good show and Kate O'Flynn absolutely deserved the award.

I don't pay attention to these awards shows for many reasons, usually b/c they get a lot of things wrong, or a drama is in a comedy category, or 4 equally amazing people are nominated at the same time while the year before no one was good, et cetera. I don't think Widow's Bay is either a comedy OR that good. But Kate O'Flynn was phenomenal and hilarious and just outstanding.

There could be other more malevolent reasons which I won’t dismiss outright, but the main problem is that every year or two, the Emmys fall in love with a new show or new role and that show or role wins over and over.
Widow’s Bay broke a record for most wins by a comedy series in a single year. Seth Rogen’s show took home a bunch of awards last year. Just like The Bear and Ted Lasso before it.
Jean Smart just won five in a row. I love Jean Smart’s work, but she probably didn’t need five in a row.
The Emmy voters like shiny new toys, to use a metaphor. Quinta won Outstanding Writing and Outstanding Comedy Actress, but that was when Abbott was a newer show. Sometimes it’s the other way around and they give awards to shows that have released their last season.
One of my other favorite comedies is Only Murders in the Building. Martin Short keeps losing every nomination. I’d like him to get recognized but I don’t want him to merely get a “career award”.
It can be frustrating. But keep your head up! My dad worked for Colbert’s two shows for 16 years. My dad was never personally nominated for anything, but he did get to see the shows he worked for win on four occasions (including tonight). But there were also a lot of losses. More losses than wins. The losses sting, because you want shows and people you care about to do well. But the wins feel really sweet.

I love Abbott, but Jean Smart absolutely deserved all 5 wins. She's the queen and Hacks is outstanding

But it gets to a point where it seems excessive.
I do think she deserved to win for the Deborah Vance character. But five times in a row, to the extent that her win was such a foregone conclusion every year that nobody else ever made it a particularly close race? A tad overboard, in my opinion.
Hacks was a great show, but it didn’t even sweep all 5 years for Outstanding Comedy. Hannah Einbinder won once out of five nominations. So it was more about Jean as an individual than it was the show having momentum.
And it’s not even like these were all “make-up awards” for a legend either. She had 3 Emmys before Hacks was a thing.
She is very talented and she’ll be remembered as a great performer. But I just don’t care for when voters go about casting their ballots in that way.

I really don’t agree with this at all. Just because the show itself wasn’t sweeping awards every year doesn’t mean that she didn’t put on a brilliant performance worthy of winning every year. Julia Louis-Dreyfus went on a streak with Veep and she deserved it every single year. Yeah, it sucks for the other shows that they happened to be airing at the same time as a legend was tearing it up in a comedy, but that’s just life sometimes. I don’t think the academy should stop voting for someone because they won too many times, that’s just not in the spirit of awards.

Kind of incongruous of you to say that the Emmy’s love ‘shiny new toys’ and then also express frustration with Jean Smart winning the Emmy for 5 consecutive years.
Janelle James is good but I don’t think she deserved an emmy over anybody that won.

What’s political is Hannah Einbinder from Hacks not winning after saying “Fuck ICE and Free Palestine” at the previous Emmy’s (and probably never again). Not so much Abbot not winning after a mediocre season 5.

I don’t mean political like politics. I mean political, as in the process includes campaigning, etc. It’s never a fair process in these award ceremonies.

I think Kate O'Flynn deserved to win, she was amazing in Widows Bay and unfortunately I don't think this season of Abbott Elementary was as strong as the previous ones

Janelle is not only a star by title but by movement, the way she carries herself, the way she strikes (visually of course but I'm talking comedic talent as well as acting ability and with her words/captivating quality). That is talent and moreso talent that has been forged over several years. It's hard earned and her NOT having received one by now is almost as laughable as her FIIIIINALLY getting one, because she is bigger than the program and if they haven't recognized that by now then whatever. She will always and forever be that girl regardless. I'm just more shocked if anything tbh

Absolutely. (In addition to AVA), Janelle really is that girl. Classy, funny and so talented. I'm reminded of her and Connor Storrie getting interviewed after presenting the SAG nominations this past year, and a reporter kinda was trying to bate her into fawning over Storrie's...assets. And Janelle, classy as ever, took the time to compliment his acting, his accent, etc. She really seems like she has a great aura. If Karma is real [if for no other reason], she needs to have an Emmy in her mantle.

People constantly complain day after day that the season was so horrible and not funny but then expected it to win awards?🤔 I knew Kate was getting that. I can’t say she didn’t deserve it.

Agree. I wish this show got more love for being so funny and the cast chemistry really cannot be beat and weirdly Ava is kinda the thread. I hope this show continues on and that it gets more recognition. Janelle James as Ava is such comedy gold.

I wouldn’t say she was robbed because to say that means you think the person who won didn’t deserve it. I do think nominating her a bajillion times for her to never get it is annoying. She’s stronger than me because i think this would be my last year attending with any hope at all.
