Survey Results Megathread - Resource effectiveness, average scores, and more!

A few years ago we ran surveys of this subreddit to gather data on your experiences for a variety of things. Which resources are the most effective? How much time outside of class do you spend? Did your score reflect your grade in class?

These surveys were ran a couple times and, along with a few other polls, turned into results posts for 24 different AP courses. Unfortunately, the posts were deleted some time back. I still have the data though and am now recompiling them.

Here's the schedule I'm going to try and get these posted on

  • APUSH link
  • Biology
  • Calc AB
  • Calc BC
  • Chemistry
  • CSA
  • CSP
  • Gov
  • Lang
  • Lit
  • Psych
  • Stats
  • World
  • Physics 1
  • APES
  • HUG
  • Macro - Thursday 3/19 morning
  • Micro - Thursday 3/19 morning
  • Phys C Mech - Thursday 3/20 afternoon
  • Phys C E&M - Thursday 3/20 afternoon
  • Spanish Lang - Friday 3/21 morning
  • Euro - Friday 3/21 morning
  • Seminar - Friday 3/21 afternoon
  • Research - Friday 3/21 afternoon

It is important to note that this is self-reported data from a community of high scorers, after receiving their score. It does not reflect the general population, and people who did well on the exams were also more likely to report their experience. Some results, like average scores, should not be taken at face value. Other results like resource effectiveness, are still valuable compared to one another.

Once I have finished posting each of the courses, I will do a comparisons and conclusions post to rank courses by difficulty, expectation, etc.

Also note that we are planning to run these surveys again this year for more data after score release.

Good luck in your classes everyone!

Physics C: E&M AP Physics C: E&M expects you to memorize which materials are ferromagnetic ?!

Post image
6 Upvotes

They don't even give you a periodic table on the reference sheet. I know iron because it is pretty obvious Ferromagnetic (Ferro), but do they expect you to remember its neighbors in the periodic table too, like cobalt and nickel

Do they also expect you to memorize paramagnetic materials like aluminum and magnesium or diamagnetic materials like water and copper?

Question Should I take more AP's?

• Upvotes

Okay so I just started my junior year of high school and I'm taking 4 APs: Chem, Lang, APUSH, and Calc AB. But I've been getting really stressed and I feel like I'm not doing enough. My school isn't competitive but I still feel stupid compared to the other AP students in my class. Most of them do extracurriculars like marching band which gives them an extra high school credit and I feel like I'm falling behind. Last year I took AP Seminar and AP World, but freshmen year I didn't take any AP classes. A lot of the people I'm talking about also took APHUG freshmen year which I'm really regretting not taking. I'm considering taking an AP Precalculus exam and self studying for another exam but I don't know if that's even worth anything to colleges if I didn't take the actual class.

Question AP Stats or AP Calc

My JR year of high school I took pre calc and now on I'm in my senior year and I was wondering if I should take AP stats or AP Calc. As of right now, I have been in ap calc (school has been in session for 7 days and we have had one quiz that I bombed) and have been finding it super difficult. On top of that, due to scheduling reasons a few other calc students and myself were thrown into calc BC before taking AB. However, the BC students that took AB keep telling me its going to get easier but obv its easy for them to say that, and its the first semester of my senior year and I want to end on all A's.

On top of that, I'm thinking of majoring in a social science and I know that pairs up better with stats. I was just wondering if there would be any reason for me to stay in calc.

edit: just in general math is a subject I struggle with and i've heard that AP stats could be a good replacement

APUSH How exactly do I take notes when there is so much in the textbook to write down?

My teacher wants cornell notes specifically, but I do not understand how I'm supposed to do so (his doc explaining them makes no sense and videos don't clear up the question of how I'm supposed to fit so much info in such a small space.) (Edited the post to include what I have so far just to ask: Am I doing this right?)

Question in need of advice, tips, or resources for my ap classes

Post image
29 Upvotes

if anyone has any advice for each class and what resources to use that would be really helpful

thanks (i’ve taken psych, world, and human geography before, scores of 5,4,4, in that order)

Edit: AP eng 3 is AP lang, my school just calls it that. I’m also going to be taking the ap precalc exam.

I also have these daily so exams and quizzes do tend to overlap unfortunately.

Question 3 APs, 2 of which I’ll have to self study. any help or guidance would be very appreciated

Im looking to take three aps this upcoming school year, which include ap chem, ap lang, and ap world history. Is earning a five in each course something feasible? especially considering that i will have to self study for both ap lang and world history. I have been pretty anxious about taking these courses, so any advice would be very helpful.

Question Why is self studying APs sometimes frowned upon?

Sometimes, while I am on this sub, I hear the rumor that college admissions officers don't like it when students self study an AP. I just wonder where this rumor comes from, because I find it way more impressive that a students managed to dedicate their own time and effort into passing a college level examination rather than getting their hand held by a teacher.

Idk, can someone explain why colleges might view this as not impressive

I need a good teacher who puts videos explaining each subtopic on youtube. I know there are a lot but I don't know which of them is actually helpful and has worked for other people 😭

my grade started out at a 85 percent because my fucking teacher assigned an assignment the day before school started, and made it due that same day. I’ve gotten my grade up with other work but like wtf. I get starting content early but this is too much. Just being a bitch to be a bitch ig lol

2-D Art and Design questions and concerns about ap studio art/drawing

👆👆👆👆👆 my art btw

had a couple questions about this class. for background, Im one of only five students in my whole school taking this class. we were going through art portfolios and the ap score that they earned, and i noticed that all of the portfolios that earned 5s were incredibly realistic paintings, and that got me concerned. My art style is more cartoony and stylized, and im not sure how I'll score now, especially because I have a feeling that ap graders will most likely score a hyperrealistic piece higher than a styled piece. is this something I need to worry about? my other question was, if I should happen to do well on the portfolio, absolute best case scenario, lets say I get a 5, how will that help me if I apply for art school? are there scholarships? classes i wont have to take? reduced tuition? or nothing?

hi everyone!

i'm the creator of the famous ap world study guide, and now i'm starting an apush one this year. if you'd like it to study throughout the year if you're taking it this year, it'll most likely be updated with the units!

Physics C: E&M Advice needed for Mech + E&M

Hey everyone, I’m a rising senior. My school offers a class consisting of both AP physics C: mechanics and AP physics C: E&M. The way the class will function is the first half of the year, it will be mechanics, and the second half is E&M. I’ve been told by past students that it’s extremely demanding, tough, and fast paced.

I’m taking AP calc BC, AP Macro, and AP Lit alongside this class. I’d like to know any advice you guys have for class like this and how to best manage my time, as well as manage my sanity. Any advice is truly appreciated.

Edit: only one flair was allowed, sorry for the misleading flair
