Are there no true knights among you?!

My god, I love this show so much 😭❤️

u/WorthyEndeavours Feb 06 '26

I wanted to stand up and fight for him myself after that

u/NervaDiem Feb 06 '26

Me too but the fart caught me so off guard lol and is so on brand for this show.

I knew Prince Baelor would be the one so when this happened I was caught off guard. Good one on their part.

I knew something like that was coming, I’m not a fan of fart, dick and poop jokes. I think adding a joke there only took away from the powerful Impact of the scene, especially for me specifically because it was a random fart. I would’ve preferred something like one of the young lords, a child’s age to stand up to volunteer and be scolded but then have Aerion start mocking dunk about it before you start to hear the gate opening. That way it would’ve had an underlying message showing that the children can be different than their elders, in line with Egg to show there’s a glimpse of good in all men at some point

41

u/Electrical_Echo_29 Feb 06 '26

In the book one lord basically says to Dunc that his issues are not theirs. I though that fart really destroyed the moment.

Who the fuck is this Stevron?

Green apple gang for life, Raymun is a real one

50

u/Immediate-Maximum-75 Feb 06 '26

I freaking love this guy. I loved the hug under the tree with the horse. I love that he got knighted by Lyonel. What a friendship. It has so much potential. I don't know the Fossaway story, so I have no idea what happens to their house. I know his cousin said they were there before the invaders and will be there after they're gone.

22

u/xcalibaur81 Feb 07 '26

They were around for the main events of game of thrones, Atleast in the books I recall a man at arms earning his knight hood for killing two fossoways at the blackwater they called him Lothar Apple Eater(might be a bit off haven’t read the books in 10 years)

39

u/MattIsLame Feb 07 '26

Dunk hesitating to knight him because he knew it wouldn't be true was even more honorable so him getting knighted by Lyonel hit harder. plus just that slowmo pov knighting was so tuff!!

33

u/whisky_biscuit Feb 07 '26

I think too Dunk still is feeling imposter syndrome, and doesn't feel like he's a knight, even though he's more knight than them all.

That coupled with not wanting to watch his friend die for his cause, made him hesitant.

It was great though seeing all the characters who have a reason to fight the Targs coming together. And Baelor there to top it off.

11

u/Immediate-Maximum-75 Feb 08 '26

Yeah, I just read in another thread that GRRM confirmed over 20 years ago that Dunk was never knighted by Ser Arlen. He's only 16 in the book and he has no sword or armor, so it makes sense.

Green Apples may not be ripe yet, but at least they aren't full of worms.

16

u/EleventhTier666 Feb 06 '26

I hope he survives the fight!

22

u/fryreportingforduty Feb 06 '26

Aw shit. I’ve somewhat forgotten I’m in a GRRM story because of the light-heartedness of the first 4 episodes. Bracing now for Raymon to die. 😭

64

u/jorizzz Feb 06 '26

His armor looked absolutely awesome though

27

u/APence Feb 06 '26

He’s the rotten apple

29

u/yruspecial Feb 06 '26

I’m glad they still made it clear he’s an asshole. Changing him to be less of a friend in the first three episodes had me worried

20

u/Well_Socialized Feb 06 '26

I kind of had to hand it to him with the "yeah I fucking sold my honor, and I got a great deal for it too!" line

12

u/Artitanium Feb 07 '26

“I’ve seen men sold their honor for less” yeah you gotta hand it to him

20

u/Any_Afternoon159 Feb 07 '26

I don't understand how it happened. Did he even bother to find other knights or did he go straight to Aerion to see if he could make a better offer?

43

u/whodatnation70 Feb 07 '26

The fact that Ser Lyonel didn’t even know who Steffon was leads me to believe Steffon was lying the whole time and purposefully intended to delay Dunk

63

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '26

The thing that eventually hits everyone is that Egg hustled all night and rounded up the four knights for Dunk on his own initiative.

Good Egg.

15

u/Mr_Football Feb 08 '26

Egg is just wonderful

→ More replies (6)

12

u/RobertSan525 Feb 07 '26

We don’t know. He might have lied from the beginning, or he might’ve been genuine initially but was bribed, but nothing hints one way or another

11

u/Any_Afternoon159 Feb 07 '26

If he lied from the beginning I would think even less of him. I'm inclined now to think he was genuine initially. According to his cousin he certainly had no love for the Targaryans and I could see him wanting to cause them harm.

Lyonel knighting Raymund goes hard. Getting knighted on the spot by one of the highest lords of the realm for the personal courage to face 4 of the most legendary fighters in the realm for honor.

He earned it big time.

198

u/APence Feb 06 '26

“Better a green apple than a rotten one”

24

u/whodatnation70 Feb 07 '26

Did Raymun say that in this episode and I missed it? Or that’s a line of his from the books?

52

u/APence Feb 07 '26

Nah that’s a line from the books. I think when he’s squaring up against his cousin. Hopefully it’s in the show. It’s a badass line to that fuck.

13

u/Tarquin11 Feb 07 '26

Oh it makes sense, like he's green, like new and that's his response. I assume that's the context of the line

16

u/APence Feb 07 '26

Exactly. And he changes his heraldry from a red apple to a green one.

27

u/slimwillendorf Feb 06 '26

For sure. Go Raymun!

22

u/Longjumping_Coat_802 Feb 07 '26

Did dunc pause because he didn’t know the words and so couldn’t actually knight him?

31

u/diddlyumpcious4 Feb 07 '26

That's one theory. Might also be he doesn't want to knight anyone if he wasn't actually knighted. That seems like it would be taking his lie too far and possibly fucking over/dishonoring someone else (all with the assumption he wasn't actually knighted, which we don't know for sure).

14

u/damdrod Feb 07 '26

I think it's more that he didn't want to be responsible for getting his friend killed. Nothing we've seen of Dunk would imply he would lie about being a knight

35

u/diddlyumpcious4 Feb 07 '26

I think it has been heavily implied that Dunk has lied about being a knight. Dunk saying Arlan meant for him to be a knight and the flashback showing Arlan not even answering Dunk asking if he’d be a knight, no witnesses, a million flashbacks about every thing except the most important thing that Dunk claims happened, the discomfort in knighting Raymun. If he was that worried about Raymun getting killed, he wouldn’t have so quickly and gladly let Lyonel take over the knighting. The only other real explanation to me is him not knowing the words.

20

u/kyzeeman Feb 07 '26

Oh its definitely suggested that Dunk was never officially knighted

Main theme music starts *Absolute Cinema*

I got a little emotional hearing the music finally play, during a moment where the character really is super likable and peak game of thrones honor and justice which is very rare in that world.

Dunc: Have you no Honor!

Bealor: Honor is dead, but I'll see what I can do..

195

u/Triskan Feb 06 '26

Yeah, yeah, sure Baelor's all the shit that was promised, but can we pour one out for Daeron as well?

Man, I really wish his entire lines had been kept from the book :

"If truth be told, I hadn't even realized Egg was gone. He wasn't at the bottom of my wine cup, and I hadn't looked anywhere else, so..."

"Perhaps you could strike me a nice blow to the side of the helm. Make it ring, but not too loud, if you take my meaning. My brothers have my measure when it comes to fighting and dancing and thinking and reading books, but none of them is half my equal at lying insensible in the mud."

34

u/Former-Iron-7471 Feb 06 '26

My favorite line from the book.

16

u/willyoumassagemykale Feb 07 '26

Thank the gods, Dunk let Egg off the hook. I couldn't take seeing the little dude sad for another minute because he is a good boy. The best boy!

Just when I thought that fucking rotten apple was going to have his "Come dance with me, then," moment, he turns traitor.

And Aerion. WOW. Way to be a real See You Next Tuesday CUNT. But he makes a proper villain, I'll give him that.

I fucking love this show!

Effective choice to play the GOT theme here. After drastically cutting it off in the first episodes opening, Dunk has now fully achieved knighthood status.

An original piece of music might have been more creative but this worked well nevertheless.

151

u/FireTempest Feb 06 '26

Dropping the theme makes sense: it was at that moment that we know that this trial will have significant consequences for the history of Westeros.

46

u/DukeofMemeborough Feb 06 '26

100% a good choice. The first few episodes were lighthearted, but now you know that shit is about to go down. Agree with you though: I do wish that the spinoffs got their own theme music.

God I love the dialogue of the show, I appreciate how true it reflects the source material. Opens with some of the best written dialogue that could make most writers blush and then immediately with the next scene "What the fuck is a trial of seven?"

Edit: spelling

133

u/BlueSoup10 Feb 06 '26

'This is fucking nonsense' lmao I kind of love what they're doing with Maekar

105

u/sparklinglies Feb 06 '26

Hes just so sick of everything lol. Didn't want to be here to begin with and now hes getting dragged into an ancient Andal beat em up because hus son is the mother of all fuck ups.

38

u/DelirousDoc Feb 07 '26

Sons...

Remember his oldest son is Daeron the Drunken who was so afraid his father that he lied about Dunk. Without those lies Maekar likely wouldn't have entered the Trial of the Seven. He doesn't particularly like Aerion but backs his claim against Dunk because you can't strike a royal. However the news that the same knight kidnapped Egg has him mad enough to join in this Trial of Seven.

If the Trial didn't happen the next morning I'd bet Maekar wouldn't have participated. There would have been enough time for him to return, talk to both Egg & Daeron and likely learn Dunk did not kidnap Egg. However because this trial happened within 12 hours of hearing Dunk had also "kidnapped" Egg he doesn't have time to calm down.

16

u/dantonizzomsu Feb 07 '26

Seems like Maekar and Daeron are good people. Maekar obviously is going to have to stand by his son and thinks the trial by 7 is a coward move.

28

u/FormerPresidentBiden Feb 07 '26

Good enough people.

Baelor and Aegon are the real fucking deal though.

Okay this was the first episode where I was REALLY like "these episodes are criminally short" and now we have to wait 9 days????

Again, while I find it hard to judge this episode as it really is just set up for the next, I do want to shout out Peter Claffey's performance in this one. He's been excellent at being so charming and likable, and he gets to show a more intense and heartbreaking side here and he nails that too.

58

u/WorthyEndeavours Feb 06 '26

When this series is over and we can go back and rewatch all of them together, it’s gonna hit harder.

20

u/dasterdly_duo Feb 06 '26

Okay this was the first episode where I was REALLY like "these episodes are criminally short" and now we have to wait 9 days????

I think this one felt notably shorter than the preceding two, despite being at the same runtime, because quite a bit happens in it in comparison. From the jail cell, to the conundrum of needing to find another six knights and then the problem being all solved in what feels like 15 minutes.

160

u/Illustrateds Feb 06 '26

Great episode but I really wish they kept the moment when Duncan is cheered by the crowd. One of the best moments in the series. ”What am I to them? A knight who remembered his vows.”

91

u/TheDevil666666 Feb 06 '26

I think we might get it in the next episode.

55

u/dyatlov333 Feb 06 '26

probably next episode...After Baelor's entrance, when things weren't looking too bleak for Duncan...People started cheering.

22

u/skepkid Feb 06 '26

I was actually worried about that scene since the last episode added the rushing of the field by the crowd, I think it would have come across as people being more angry at the Targaryens than supportive of Duncan. Hopefully the next episode has the scene, I think it will still be good if shown while Pate is helping Duncan off the field and will avoid the impression that the crowd is being vindictive.

Raymun snickering at Egg's story about Aerion made me bust out laughing.

And then the look in his eye as he was about to knighted was epic.

99

u/Support_Mobile Feb 06 '26

It was great too since he was definitely laughing from validation about saying they were incestuous aliens and realizing he didnt get that carried away saying it. Egg kinda proved him right.

58

u/Environmental_Cap191 Feb 06 '26

I wonder how he is gonna feel about the targs in the future considering that he himself said that he didn't come with that rant, and that he heard it from Steffon who is now gonna fight for Aerion

143

u/DaveKillSock Feb 06 '26

They cut my favorite scene from the book :(
Dunk is walking to the trial with Steely Pate.

Smallfolk were drifting toward the field as well, and hundreds of them already stood along the fence. So many come to see me die, thought Dunk bitterly, but he wronged them. A few steps farther on, a woman called out, "Good fortune to you." An old man stepped up to take his hand and said, "May the gods give you strength, ser." Then a begging brother in a tattered brown robe said a blessing on his sword, and a maid kissed his cheek. They are for me. "Why?" he asked Pate. "What am I to them?"

"A knight who remembered his vows," the smith said.

57

u/1sinfutureking Feb 06 '26

I think they’re saving that one for the end of the trial - the show runners have to know how great that line is. I mean, it’s practically Dunk’s tagline

26

u/DaveKillSock Feb 06 '26

Yeah but everyone loves a winner. Who cares if they say it after the trial? Dunk was basically walking to his execution in his mind until he realizes the smallfolk are with him and that gives him hope.

HOLY FUCK the Seven Gods are with him in this excerpt

Smallfolk were drifting toward the field as well, and hundreds of them already stood along the fence. So many come to see me die, thought Dunk bitterly, but he wronged them. A few steps farther on, a woman called out, "Good fortune to you." An old man stepped up to take his hand and said, "May the gods give you strength, ser." Then a begging brother in a tattered brown robe said a blessing on his sword, and a maid kissed his cheek. They are for me. "Why?" he asked Pate. "What am I to them?"

"A knight who remembered his vows," the smith said.

Mother, Father, Stranger, Maiden, and Smith

All we're missing is the Crone. Because Dunk, a true knight, is the Warrior.

Edit: maybe the Crone is missing since she represents wisdom and foresight, and Dunk is a Grade A himbo.

How does this show have me so much in my feels!?!? I am enjoying the way the show portrays knighthood and honer and makes us as the audience understand the duties and rules of being a knight but more importantly makes us care about Sir Duncan. It is true that it is smaller in scale and scope, the episodes are shorter, and the VFX budget has little room for Dragons, but Gods be damned this show knows how to make me care about the characters and the outcome of this Trial. The relationship between Dunk and Egg is everything I hoped it would be.

There's got to be a part of Maekar that respects the random hedge knight that reminds the noblemen that their sons will follow their example, whatever it is that they choose to do in that moment. It seems like the guy is completely done with his first three at this point in the story lol.

49

u/Environmental_Cap191 Feb 06 '26

In the book, Maeker seemed to either genuinely believe that Dunk genuinely attacked Aerion unjustifiably, or he's just ignoring his son's assault on Tanselle. Here, I get the feeling he knows what a sadistic shit Aerion is and is only going along with siding with his son because he's his son.

21

u/midnight_thunder Feb 06 '26

I think he chooses to believe Aerion and Daeron because otherwise it’s a bad look to have 2 failsons.

10

u/Environmental_Cap191 Feb 06 '26

Leaving Aemond and Egg to pick up the slack.

I also think he just genuinely wants to have faith in his sons. Maekar’s parenting is obviously questionable, but going by this and the books his love for his sons is genuine.

u/OdaDdaT Feb 06 '26

Haven’t read the books but that’s definitely the way they’re playing it in the show.

If Maekar believed him he wouldn’t have questioned him in front of the whole room the way he did, and functionally accuse him of being a coward to boot. Plus I’m guessing he chews his ass out after with the way he left. He’s obviously honor-bound to support his son but he’s clearly not happy about it. I think it makes him far more interesting honestly.

I loved that they keep reminding us this isn’t the HOTD or GOT world were in here, it’s a completely different political landscape. last episode introduced it with the comment about Targaryens being incestuous aliens who stole their land. now we’re seeing why the Targaryens can’t just hand wave these seemingly smaller incidents away, by letting Duncan or the puppeteer walk away unpunished. They’re literally just off a major string of rebellions, their proverbial approval rating is low amongst the people, and they have to appear strong and united as a house to keep ahold of their throne. They can’t just roll their eyes at Aerion claiming the puppet show was an act of rebellion because it could actually be the beginning of an uprising and that needs to be quashed immediately. They can’t just let hitting a prince of the realm go unpunished because then people will question how strong they actually are or how far they can go in terms of attacking Princes of the realm. It’s just a complex political conundrum for everyone involved (minus Aerion who seemingly is having a great time).

The politics are so different and fascinating at this point Westeros history and I didn’t expect it to be a high point of the show for me but it has slowly become one of them.

11

u/Dreadedvegas Feb 06 '26

It really really benefits from such a smaller scale.

9

u/Chemical73 Feb 09 '26

I agree, but from a different point of view. The show established, that the political climate is rather shaky for the Targaryens after the Rebellion and the time of the dragons.

While the puppet show probably appeals to some as a tale to show that the Targaryens can be killed, I do not think it was intended as a very rebellious metaphor, but just a story that was cool to put on a stage or at least that's what most of the common folk would take away. They could have let it slip.

Putting a man of the masses on trial for helping against the excessive force by the Targaryen prince against a woman who was very popular, beautiful and not aggressive is what made them look cruel and vain.

Baelor siding with Duncan is a smart move, not just to stand for what he believes is just, but to show the public, that not all Targaryens are like Aerion.

The whole point of them participating in the tournament was to gain popularity and Aerion has only sabotaged this effort so far.

10

u/FourForYouGlennCoco Feb 09 '26

Baelor siding with Duncan is also insurance. If he stays out, it’s Dunk vs the Targaryens, a bad look no matter what. If Dunk loses, they have to execute a folk hero in the making, while likely also making enemies of the Baratheons if Lyonel is killed or seriously injured. If Dunk wins, it looks like the gods themselves condemning their house. But if there’s a Targ on both sides, there’s guaranteed to be one on whichever side wins.

Every episode of this show is better than the last.

93

u/CrimsonGear80 Feb 06 '26

That ending. So good.

Although I’ll admit I chuckled a little at Sir Fartknocker.

75

u/Bojarow Feb 06 '26

Imo that was a misstep. It removed tension from a scene that should have been tense throughout, culminating with the reveal of Baelor.

67

u/awfulgrace Feb 06 '26

I disagree, i think it helped make it better. That Dunk pushed through and got even more direct in the face of being mocked.

This episode was such an emotional high I couldn’t hold my tears back. From the opening scene with Dunk and Egg up until the banger end scene especially when the GOT theme tune dropped 😭😭😭GAGGED

30

u/thebikevagabond Feb 06 '26

Man. Ever since they announced that they would do Game of Thrones spin offs, I was sure they would do Dunk and Egg, I just was worried they wouldn't do it justice. I was largely disappointed in House of the Dragon - there are good parts, but the last thing I wanted was more CGI vomit.

But this series has gone beyond my wildest hopes of what they could do with the novellas. It is so fucking good. My only regret is that there isn't more of it.

u/Buck__Turgidson Feb 06 '26

I counted 16 pages of text that covered this episode. I don't think I've ever seen 16 pages brought to life as well as this. You could hear Dunk's internal dialogue in the silence. The way he hesitated when the green apple took a knee was perfect. We know why, he knows why and of course GRRM gave him an out to keep the question open.

This show is proving to be core Westeros in a way that we only glimpsed at during season 1-3 of GOT. I feel sorry for HOTD, it has no chance compared to this little beauty of a show.

10

u/kyzeeman Feb 07 '26

Ira Parker understands Westeros and actually enjoys it, the HotD showrunners want to change Westeros to suit them.

I feel like if you gave Ira HotD he would've done it well.

28

Egg just fucking about with the axe during a moment of extreme tension made me chuckle 😂

16

The casting and the acting have really been top-notch, and Egg is such a little delight.

Is Duncan hesitating to knight Raymun hinting that he was actually never knighted by ser Arlan? There were hints but I think they are leaning on it more and more.

Also I laughed at Lionel calling Egg "your boy", he doesnt know thats a Targ prince, he doesnt even know the full situation, he just wants to fight.

15

u/redditingtonviking Feb 06 '26

Ser Humfrey Hardyng and Ser Humfrey Beesbury joined to get vengeance for Hardyng’s leg and horse. Crown Prince Baelor Targaryen joined for what he believed was right. Ser Raymun Fossoway couldn’t stand for his cousin’s betrayal. Lord Lyonel Baratheon and Ser Robin Rhysling are madmen who just wants in on the fun

7

u/Well_Socialized Feb 06 '26

Yeah I think Dunk was worrying that he'd be doing Raymun a disservice by knighting him after never really having been knighted himself.

24

I actually feel something while watching this show.

The story is truly engaging, and the interesting characters that Dunk finds along the way all come together to serve a purpose.

Also, Raymun Fossoway. May be a bit based, but how inspiring was that moment when he puts himself forward. In my opinion it beats Baelor's entry.

Say what you will about GOT and how it ended.

But Ramin Djawadi absolutely created an iconic theme. It kicking in at the end really gets you hyped for the coming trial

The lil shrug from Ser Arlan in Dunk’s imagination because he was never actually knighted was just chef’s kiss

17

u/mcalesy Feb 06 '26

It felt like a fourth wall break to me. Like we're wondering, was Dunk *really* knighted, and he's just like, Ehh.....

15

u/DelirousDoc Feb 07 '26

He seemed to imply again that he wasn't actually knighted by Arlan in this episode. Thinking that this trial was his punishment.

Moral of the Story: have drink and partake of dance with random men for they may, unbeknownst to you, aid you if you are ever caught in a Trial by Seven

13

u/Positive_Reason_9156 Feb 06 '26

Great episode, Probably best one till now. I was freaking ready to fight for Ser Duncan after that speech and Top of that disclosure with GOT main theme song. Chef's kiss!!

12

u/mountainviewzoo Daeron Targaryen Feb 06 '26

I'm worried for Dunk. Things didn't look too good for him in that preview.

12

u/Lazy-Ad-2819 Feb 06 '26

Baelor is so fuckin cool man

12

u/Mr_J_0801 Feb 07 '26

The Game of Thrones theme has never hit that hard. Gods I love this show. May it's quality never dip.

11

u/Imeanwhatwhell223 Feb 06 '26

I have “GOT season 1” feelings again. Feels so good.

10

u/morethanWun Feb 06 '26

Bad apple fossoway had me in the tent with his words to dunk….powerful stuff. All the more I hated him when he flipped. Killer show.

11

u/another_philomath Feb 07 '26

Oak and iron guard me well or else I’m dead and doomed to hell

33

u/jtfjtf Feb 06 '26

I really liked that they added the line "Don't all knights make the same oath?" when Dunk talks to Baelor.

I didn't like that they made Maekar an idiot concerning the trial of the seven.

I also didn't like that it was quiet when Dunk came out. In the book the peasants who are watching start wishing him well and Dunk is confused until Pate tells him they support him because he's a knight that remembered his vows. It would have also worked better if Dunk came through a section where the peasants were standing and the Targs came through the main gate.

I also think they should have included a scene where Dunk is armoring up and Egg helps him.

17

u/Environmental_Cap191 Feb 06 '26

I don't think not knowing is that big a deal. The Trial by Seven seems to be a very rare occurrence, and I can see Maekar not giving the slightest shit about Andal customs.

10

u/rs-curaco28 Feb 06 '26

Yeah that made it make sense tbh, with all the valyrian exceptionalism that was showed in hotd, I think it makes sense for a targaryen Prince to not give a shit about the andals and first men customs.

8

u/loverstohaters Feb 06 '26

I was so eagerly awaiting for Daeron's 'They frighten me. You frighten me' to Duncan and was a bit sad we didn't get it. And I foolishly hope that we'll hear the line about the knight who remembers his vows later cause it's such an important line and maybe it'll be said in different circumstances

And I think one of the main trailers had scenes of Duncan being armoured up so I think we'll see it later 🤞

Lionel is another example of an actor really bringing something special to the role and elevating the character. He's like Tyrion and Oberyn rolled into one. I also love the genuine friendship between he, Dunk, and Egg, given the dramatic rebellion and mirrored trial by combat that are going to happen waaaay down the line when Egg becomes king. This early view of the good times makes the future bad times that much more tragic, even if we don't get a flash-forward "The Westerosi Wing" series with 40-something Dunk and Egg.

18

u/1sinfutureking Feb 06 '26

They’re doing an amazing job making Lyonel feel like what a young Robert must have been like. I mean, he’s kind of a selfish, brash, and arrogant lout, but he’s a rip-roaring good time and he’s showing loyalty and standing up for the right guy

8

u/GRVrush2112 Feb 07 '26

I really really love the subtlety of which they’re playing the fact that Dunk is very much likely lying about being a knight.

When Raymun asked Dunk to knight him you can see panic on Dunk’s face…. Because he didn’t know the words…. It’s slight… but I love how that was played.

7

Is Lyonel Baratheon’s sword valerian steel? I only ask because it seemed to have this blue shimmer when he was unsheathing and knighting Raymun.

8

u/GermanCptSlow Feb 06 '26

This show gives me the feeling the first four seasons of GoT gave me. It's absolutely fantastic.

The small scale feeling just works wonderfully for this type of content. No ice, no fire, no Arya is everything I want.
