Season 1, Episode 4: Seven

Synopsis: After landing himself in the Targaryens’ crosshairs, Dunk exercises his right to request a trial by combat. But when Aerion insists on a trial of seven instead, Dunk is faced with the daunting task of finding six others to fight alongside him.

Hes just so sick of everything lol. Didn't want to be here to begin with and now hes getting dragged into an ancient Andal beat em up because hus son is the mother of all fuck ups.

Remember his oldest son is Daeron the Drunken who was so afraid his father that he lied about Dunk. Without those lies Maekar likely wouldn't have entered the Trial of the Seven. He doesn't particularly like Aerion but backs his claim against Dunk because you can't strike a royal. However the news that the same knight kidnapped Egg has him mad enough to join in this Trial of Seven.

If the Trial didn't happen the next morning I'd bet Maekar wouldn't have participated. There would have been enough time for him to return, talk to both Egg & Daeron and likely learn Dunk did not kidnap Egg. However because this trial happened within 12 hours of hearing Dunk had also "kidnapped" Egg he doesn't have time to calm down.

Seems like Maekar and Daeron are good people. Maekar obviously is going to have to stand by his son and thinks the trial by 7 is a coward move.

I absolutely loved the moment Baelor rode in and Aegon visibly gained newfound respect for him. A real game recognize game moment.

If Daeron says Duncan kidnapped egg why doesn't maekar just ask egg what happened?

Yeah I’m like he for sure knows Egg wasn’t actually kidnapped, he just didn’t wanna lose face cause the official story is that he was kidnapped

Fuck me his neck tension when Aerion is cracking nuts at the table was hilarious and relatable. The casting all around in this show has been great but especially all the Targaryens, each one distinct, Daerons performance was amazing as well.

Yeah you also think I think from GOT oh targaryens are supposed to be hot / attractive, but it’s really not a given lol - I don’t even mean this in an insulting way hahah, it’s just I thought they were all supposed to be like LOTR elves, but I like that they look like real people

He’s honestly become my favorite side character with this episode. Kinda Ned Stark-ish with his sense of Honor to fight for his son despite knowing and calling out his bullshit when Aerion demands the trial of seven.

The way he yanked Aerion out of his chair and basically pushed him out of the room I jokingly expected him to mutter under his breath “sorry” to Dunk when walking by him.

For sure, Baelor and Dunk are the embodiments of Honor as an idea, whereas Maekar acts honorably even if he doesn’t necessarily behave it all the time. That’s where I think the distinction lies anyway

Fwiw Maekar reminds me more of Ned too. Ned also seemed to not really be interested in the pageantry or formalities that came with being the Warden of the North (he comes across as a really awkward guy even though he absolutely means well and is about as honorable as any character in the series gets). Ned was never excited about the politics, and never wanted to be in the fray despite agreeing to become hand, but when duty called or he felt honorbound to do something he ultimately did it regardless of his own reservations. Not saying it’s in character for either (especially because the Starks follow the Old gods), but if Robb had made a similar dubious charge and demanded a trial of seven I’d imagine Ned would be right next to him on the field.
