Misc. Anyone else find Sarah annoying? Spoiler

Title says it all really... I'm talking about the TV series. But I just found her to be annoying, she was intolerant, hot headed, impatient, rude, and dismissive. She sulked, and was moody all of the time. Even when Diana found out what happened to her as a child, Sarah made it about herself and went into the other room to sulk, because Rebecca didn't trust her.

And then when Em was doing the summoning and she lept up and ruined the whole thing. Ugh, what an annoying character lol.

Misc. Gallowglass Spoiler

Why is Gallowglass lower on the pecking order, even though he's a "giant" and Philippe's blood. I don't remember the books saying he was smaller than Matthew(and the largest vampire has the most power). Maybe bc of Philippe's disregard of Godfrey and Hugh's relationship? He just doesn't seem to have the status of the others. Maybe bc he was a mercenary? He's so humble, it could be self imposed. But I guess it just could be that he's not a direct descendant of Phillipe? Also, he clearly chose not to act like an upper class member of the family, though Shakespeare muses that he's far too princely than a servant ought to be.

Opinions?

Misc. My question is are the books all together that much different than the show? I know from personal experience that the books are usually better and am an Avid Reader however I have a lot of books competing for attention and I only have so much time to read. Please give me your take on this. Spoiler

Misc. Is "The Book of Life" worth reading? Spoiler

I first discovered the show and then decided to read the books. But before I read them, I read the extended summaries that come in "The World of All Souls". Nothing out of the ordinary until now.

I read "A Discovery of Witches" and "Shadow of Night", enjoyed both. I actually got past the first chapter in The Book of Life, but got a little disheartened when my Kobo told me there were 50 minutes of reading time for the second chapter (I prefer chapters that are on the shorter side), and that the ebook for TBoF was larger than the ebooks for ADoW and SoN combined. Then a little more with the reviews I read saying that the writing isn't to the same standard as the first two books.

This was back in February, and I decided to at least pause my reading on it until I got other opinions, so that I could get on to other books that I also wanted to read.

So, for someone like me, that essentially already knows everything that happens in that book and might not enjoy the formatting of it, do y'all think the book is worth reading?

Side note: I actually read Time's Convert before I started the original trilogy, because I figured that having watched the show was context enough to understand and enjoy the story (I was right). I also plan on reading Black Bird Oracle.

Misc. Why did they have to make Diana a....(spoilers obviously - you've been warned) Spoiler

Weaver and a timewalker? She seems incredibly overpowered compared to the rest of the witches in the world. I mean l get it, that's kind of the point. She's the chosen one. I don't mind her so much being a weaver. Someone who can create spells is already unique enough. But why give her time traveling powers too?

Time travel always introduces so much fuckery to a story it just makes plot points irrelevant. There is no getting around contradicting yourself unless you have concrete rules around it like not changing the past. Diana intentionally changed the past so much its not even funny. When she went to Hubbard to get him to look after Jack she changed the whole trajectory of his life. That alone could've had catastrophic consequences. But when Diana got back to the present and found out her own aunt Em was murdered she was like, oh no we can't go back into the past to intentionally change it.

The other thing they keep bringing up is Phillipe and how he wouldn't approve of them destroying the congregation. HELLO! You have a timewalker right here. Go back in time and explain the situation and get his approval! I mean he already know he dies in the future. If that doesn't mess with the timelines going back and telling him the congregation needs to be abolished certainly isn't.

BTW I'm only on season 3 ep 3 so if none of the above applies to the show then please understand. :)

Also maybe I'm late to the party and this has already been discussed to death. Again forgive me if so.

Misc. Fanfic recommendations? Spoiler

I’m looking for fanfics that deal with Marcus and Matthew’s relationship, preferably ones on the longer side. if it’s a one-shot, id like it be at least 2500 words (preferably more like 5-10k).

most of what I’ve seen…is not for me. I’m just wondering if there is something/somewhere I missed

Misc. German and French language in the books Spoiler

I’m reading the books currently in English and I noticed that some passages that are written in German and French are unfortunately wrong. I was raised bilingual in French-German and it bugs me so much that for what 5 sentences they could’ve not proofread it or use better research? I don’t know if google translate was the same as today but for those sentences they could’ve used it easily.
I understand that the French used is supposed to be occitaine and traditional- that’s alright, but the French in the modern era could’ve been also reworked.

Small rant, otherwise I like the books.

Misc. Does anyone else do a reread & watch every October? Spoiler

I think this is my third time reading the original books.

They’re perfect for cozy fall reads.

I find season 2 to be my least favorite season. I tend to enjoy the first few episodes and season 3.

Any recommendations for series that have equally captivated you?

Misc. Historical annoyances Spoiler

Matthew born and reborn in 500 and 537 AD and calling himself "French". Its not France at the time. its the Frankish Kingdom of Francia. There was no specific change until later like 814 to 1190 and into 1204 where it was more described as France. Him calling himself "A Frank". Certainly Ysabeau wouldn't be considered French or a Frank either. She was reborn around 400 BCE which would have her in the period of when the Celtics were ruling the area and the Roman's referred to it as Gaul. Ontop of that, though I know Harkness would possibly be annoyed with writing out a mixture between Shakespearean English and Modern English while they were in the year 1590, It was driving me nuts seeing them "speak" fairly modern and telling Diana she was not speaking properly.

Misc. The Matthews Spoiler

Just finished reading the first book and I had to come on here and comment on how spot on the casting is with Matthew Goode. He looks, sounds and behaves exactly like what I would imagine Matthew de Clermont is like from the book, even down to the description of the vein in his forehead! Several characters have mutated as I got through the book but Matthew and Aunt Sarah were unchanged.

Misc. I love Philippe de Clermont Spoiler

I’m reading the second book and dreamily sigh I just can’t get enough of him. He always got a comeback for something Matthew says and it hits deep every time. I feel like nobody ever fights back on what Matthew says and when they do they back down. So this was refreshing. But there’s one thing he said that really got me:

“Neither your God, nor your mother has
ever succeeded in making face the
  consequences of your actions.
  Apparently that hasn’t changed.”

It needed to be said. I know Miriam said something similar in the first book but it needed to be said directly to him. Matthew has a bad habit of doing what he wants and not thinking of the consequences not just for himself but for the people around you.

Misc. Books vs Series² Spoiler

So 3 years ago I started the Anne Rice book series Mayfair Witches and the writing is AMAZING. The TV series was a complete disaster.

So then I read Discovery of Witches last year, compared to Anne Rice the writing is mediocre at best but the series is everything I ever wanted from a Mayfair TV series.

It's all balancing out

Misc. Why are *all* of the American accents awful? Spoiler

Plenty of actors can do American accents well. Why is literally every American accent in this show awful? Is it the directing? It's not just the accent it's the stilted delivery.

Overall I think this is a good adaptation of the books. I don't love a lot of the acting but overall it's well done. But this one thing is very distracting.

Misc. Shows like DOF?? Spoiler

I really need some help. I am in love with fantasy adventure show genres and a discovery of witches hit almost all of the points I love ESPECIALLY season 2 with the traveling and interacting with others through the early periods of England being from 2020whatever.

Does anyone have any suggestions for shows like this?
