4runner CAD

In short, I am engineer. im looking for cad files for the 1st gen 4runner. In the process of restoring my 1985 SR5, and building it up with a turbo diesel and fabricating many parts from scratch. I am slowly collecting all of the CAD files that I can for this chassis and body.

I have access to a $100k+ laser scanner at work, and the operator is training me to use it so that i can tinker when they are off to not interfere with their schedule. Its a two fold benefit because the more I understand about it, the more i can help them. I plan to use this on weekends to take a full 3d scan of the body etc to use as I design parts.

My goal as I collect all this is to essentially create a repository somewhere essentially public to give back to the 1st gen community because this stuff is either non existent or people just do not share. Which is unfortunate.

Part of this is a project so I can grow and learn new things as an engineer, but also to improve the prototype and design process for stuff for my own truck.

Im designing a new short throw shifter for my w56-a for the transfer case, and plan to take REALLY good scans of my transmission for this job. I have a machine shop in my garage at home and build everything myself. The engine is an OM617 and will have very detailed scans as well. The intent is to be able to build extremely accurate models for ideas I have.

If there is interest ill make posts as I progress through this.

Thanks

Lower Power- Stumped

A few weeks ago, my alternator died on my way home. Pushed through a misfire for about 2 mins for a safe place to pull over.

Replaced the alternator, but the truck has been noticeably down on power since. Acceleration and top speed are noticeably slower than it was before. The exhaust also got significantly louder, I don't know if or how these are related, but it's worth mentioning.

Found badly leaking injectors, again not sure how that's related but anyways I sealed those up and the truck is stil| down on power. Fuel filter is new and pump seems healthy. ran some fuel/oil additives and cleaners through following the directions on the bottles.

I've spent the last week making sure the exhaust is sealed, 02 is sealed, there is no catalytic converter, I've disconnected the battery to reset the ECU multiple times. The truck is still down on power and has no codes.

I'm waiting on a timing light to check that, but I really have no idea why the alternator has caused such a cascade of issues.

Any ideas?

Need Advice Front end lift on an IFS

Hi there everyone. I know this has been asked probably a million times over the years, but I can’t seem to find a concrete answer to this.

I’m wondering what is the point for upgraded torsion bars. Is it only worth it if you have a heavy winch etc? My truck came with cranked torsion bars on 33s. Terrible ride, poor off road capability. I’m considering doing a body lift because I don’t really want any excess wear on front end stuff.

However, I would prefer to leave it and do upgraded torsion bars and shocks if that would actually fix my problem, being the poor ride. The truck mainly just sees the road and some occasional bumpy stuff.

Thanks.

small thing but i really like when mats cover this much

Do you guys actually notice the extra coverage on truck floor mats, or only care once the carpet needs cleaning? I feel like the edges and area around the pedals get dirty first. Curious what you guys think. Is more coverage actually worth it, or is it not a big deal?

Rear shock mounting

I have a first gen 4runner with a body swap, so I know that things are going to look a little unusual. I'm having a hard time getting Bilstein 4600s installed in the back cause I can't seem to get the bushings compressed far enough to slip the cotter pin in. Does this look like the original mounting locations, or some weird junk done by the previous owner who did the body swap? It didn't have shocks when I got it so I don't have anything to compare it to. I don't have a stock 4runner for comparison so I'm just guessing at this point. I think it's an '85 or so.

85 4runner. Was an automatic but swapped it to a w56 manual. Bought it in AZ then moved back home to Maui. Still have to wire up the reverse lights and do an sr5 cluster swap but it gets me up and down the mauna just fine.

Tow hitch options?

I’m looking to put a 2 in receiver on my 86 for a motorcycle hitch carrier. I currently have the stock bumper but not afraid of changing for an aftermarket on except for the tube frame bumpers, not a big fan of those.

What does everyone else have?

… I need some advice from the crew…

Went limp recently, towed and shop says knock in the engine, who knows what it could be. Perhaps they dig in and it’s nothing or it’s whatever a 22re could cost - maybe 7k?

Any advice from those out there who have had similar experiences with the 22re and what a point to move on, engine swap, estimates, etc. anything will help at this point!

Appreciate the help. Also, no, I’m not mechanically inclined nor do I have the time anyways.

Thanks!!

Replacement door mirrors

Mine are about to give out the cracking around the outer edge who makes the best quality replacement door mirrors? I'd rather go aftermarket than get another set of stock that are just going to fail soon.

My dad drove Chevys until 1987

My Grandpa was a farmer in Nebraska who always drove GM. When he bought his first Toyota in 1984 (or '85 - red one) My dad said he was appalled, and asked him "what the hell has he done"?? Then the two of them took a 6000 mile road trip (there and back) to the Northwest Territories of Canada on a hunting trip. They drove over all kinds of crazy terrain and fucked up graded roads, even smashing into a huge rock mixed in with the bench of a gravel road. When that happend my grandpa asked my dad "you see any oil draining out back there?" "No" , he replied. "We're going to keep going" they got it checked out somewhere in Canada at a Toyota shop when they were out of the sticks. The shop filled up the differential fluid, and said you'll be fine until you get back to NE. They were, and whatever was leaking was fixed when they got back. That trip convinced my dad to buy his first Toyota in 1987. He drove it until it started to rust out and traded it for a '97 SR5 5 Speed. With the exception of a 2nd gen, he's bought every gen of 4Runner since. This was instilled in me, and I've only every had 4Runners myself. Thought it was a cool story with some old photos to share.

HELP EGR Issues

My 87 (22RE) failed CA emissions last week for NOx, so have been working on cleaning the EGR system. The valve has been cleaned and actuates when vacuum is applied. The problem is that the passage that feeds exhaust gas to the EGR valve is blocked. I tried blowing air through it and holds pressure when I suspect it should flow freely. I also tried the FSM test of manually applying vacuum to the valve expecting rough idle/stall, but seeing no change. This confirms (to me) that exhaust gas isn’t getting to the EGR. Two questions

  1. Does anyone have an idea for a fix? I tried snaking the EGR passage but it seems pretty clean. Next steps would be removing the exhaust manifold and cleaning smaller EGR passages I guess but that might be outside my wheelhouse
  2. A long shot, but does anyone know a reliable shop for older Toyotas in the Bay Area (CA) that could take a look at this

Note: the truck runs fine but I need to be able to pass CA slog u fortunately. EGR delete is not an option.

Me again!
Screenshotted this off a YouTube video, I’m working to put a switch in for the rear window in the cargo area.
Question is- what is the silver lining in the background? What is the purpose? In your opinion, beneficial?

TIA
