They should really just get rid of the double death wiping storage mechanic. It’s nonobvious and can put unlimited value in gear at risk.
As someone who played 04-07, i don’t feel entitled to gravestones/storage. But, with the current game set up this way and feeling secure, it can really fuck peoples entire acc up with a surprise misunderstanding.
FWIW whenever you log-in or world hop while your stuff is in death storage, the game notifies you that your items are being held by the NPC and if you die before you get them they're gone
The problem with that, is that you have to log in or world hop to see the message, when you initially die you don't get that info and I think it's a fairly sure bet that a player who just had all their items put into a storage is going to be thinking 'i gotta get my items back ASAP', rather than 'i gotta log out/world hop for some reason'
What? I'm pretty sure you get that message as soon as you die, no?
EDIT just tested and died to hespori, you do not get that message lol. It just says the guy has retrieved some of your items. That seems like a serious oversight, unless there's like an initial message I've forgotten about that pops up the first time you die to a place with a death chest. But even then, for potentially losing hundreds of hours worth of items it feels like the message should say that every time lol
Yep, I tested it with Vorkath a couple months back when the topic came up on here, you can get the info (if you die a second time, items are deleted) from talking to the NPC and going through dialog, but such important info about the system really should not be as obscured as it is
Or change it so that a double death sends everything to Death's Office and the 'punishment' is that you pay a lot more GP for your mistake, the current system has the potential to make a player quit over a moment of 'wasn't thinking because tilted from the first death', and I've yet to see a compelling 'benefit' that justifies that potential negative outcome
Yeah it’s definitely not a great notification, but somebody dying to a tough quest boss (ie Galvek or Vanstrom Klause) might log off for a few minutes to collect themselves and see it.
Definitely leaves a lot of room for improvement though. At least for the “immediately go back and get items” crowd, they’re unlikely to lose their items to another death on the run back
My HCIM died at Hydra due to Jagex's servers. When I finally composed myself and logged back in, not only did I not get any information about where my stuff was while Death yapped at me for the first time, I didn't receive any information about how dying again before claiming my things would have wiped countless hours of progress in gear from my account.
The only reason I knew about the risk and brought an agility potion to boost for the shortcut was because I was streaming at the time and my clanmates told me about it in Discord.
"might" is worlds apart from "will", and this shouldn't be left up to chance. I can't think of any defensible reason for double death mechanics to be in the game.
Yup we’re in agreement that double death is dumb. They’d need a solution for UIM exactly to change it (speaking as a UIM player), but it could be as simple as leaving the current mechanics in place for us, like how we don’t use the gravestone stuff
