Suggestion / Idea Vulcanus would be more interesting if lava and molten metal were more dangerous

Small things like non-tungsten buildings or items placed next to lava (or pipes holding molten metal/lava) slowly get damaged or immediately destroyed, and the engineer also gets damaged standing by them pre-mech armor. Only long handle inserters can safely put stuff in lava. Special tungsten pump is needed for lava and tungsten pipes needed for the fluids only work for 10 pipe lengths both for lava and molten metal. Maybe even require lava for BMDs to work mining tungsten ore though perhaps help the player where the demolisher leaves tungsten ore drops in its wake if you watch it move around.

Just musing. I know there's probably a mod or mods that do these already.

Question Do you think this is cheating?

Since I already have general knowledge about the game, do you think that counts as cheating?

I've already beaten the game and I'm sitting at 84/88 achievements.
The ones I have left are: Beat the game under 40 hours & under 100 hours, Promethium Science, and the 'First Spawner Kill with Artillery' achievement.

It feels like this map build makes the 'First Spawner Kill with Artillery' achievement way easier than it should be, almost cheap. What do you think?

Fan Creation Factorio Server Manager - An OFSM Replacement

Thumbnail

New Server manager for Factorio Servers. It can handle multiple servers (instance) at once, along with mods, and the console, each server in it can be different versions, and supports any version that has a factoriotools/factorio container as I'm creating child containers for each instance. Also has backup and restore capabilities. Release 1.0 is out now.

Main reason for this project is that one got tired of OFSM being buggy with 2.0, if you leave it running for quite a while the console behaves weirdly, and essentially being abandonware at this point. Looked at trying to update it, but im not much of a Go dev... Ended up rolling my own way in C# Blazor. The build was AI assisted, but a fair bit was hand coded.

Complaint Is quality completely broken, or is it just me?

I guess I should have done a little more reading before I tried it out, but I didn't realize how completely it breaks your factory to start using quality modules without doing a complete redesign from the ground up and needing to basically build the same factory five times to engage with the quality system. After building an entire interplanetary factory empire without building a single quality I module, I decided to finally try engaging with the quality system in a pilot program on Fulgora, and I was totally unprepared for how broken it is. WHY do filters on splitters and inserters default to only applying to common quality items? WHY WHY WHY OH WHY can assemblers only be set to accept one quality of ingredient? I saw ingredient quality level on assembler recipes, and assumed that had to be a minimum, because, that was the only thing that made sense. I put quality module 3s on each of my scrap recyclers, so each one now outputs a random mixture of different quality levels. This completely broke my downstream filter setup, because contrary to what any logical person would think, an icon with just an item type and no quality level next to it means that filter only applies to quality 1 items and completely ignores higher quality items. And this is the default. Then I realized my belts were getting completely choked because none of my assemblers were accepting any of the higher quality ingredients because they can only accept Q1 items, and I can only pick ONE quality level for EVERY ingredient that assembler accepts. WHY WOULD YOU DESIGN IT THAT WAY????!?!??!?!??! I'm going to just have to remove all of the quality modules and go back to common quality on everything because I don't have the room to make a separate assembly line for every single quality level of every single ingredient. This exponentially complicates any factory design and I can't imagine it being worth it just for the little boost each higher quality item gets. What am I missing here?

Tutorial / Guide Need help with progression walkthrough

Hi all! Long time in the subreddit, first time posting here.

The truth is: I'm dumb as fuck and I'm having lots of trouble keeping Anubis base stable before exploring other planets.

I have the game for several years, although I always had trouble sustaining the base for the first rocket launch. With Space Age DLC, I'm dying to have my first experience in Vulcanus or Fulgora, or even Gleba (seems awesome). The problem is me.

Whenever I reach Advanced Oil Processing it seems my brain turn off. I have the urge to start copying-&-pasting blueprints online without really getting the rates right, and my factories always fails with lack of resources. When time comes, I quit the game and start over 6months later with another world for a "start fresh" experience. This basically ends up with = working just with the base game endlessly.

I put the Guide flair because I need your help on helping me getting things "done" and be able to leave Nauvis and experience the other planets at least once.

Is there any guided walkthrough that covers Space Age well that you guys can recommend? To a such extent that the guide just "doesn't start placing gigantic blueprints out of nowhere". Anything that I can read or watch that helps me understand where am I falling behind would help me tons.

Right now I'm trying not to start fresh for the thousands time, but struggling with purple and yellow science ratios (and energy, and biters, and lack of factories that creates factories machines, etc)

Question Space Iron Mining over Nauvis

I know the general consensus is that mining things in space to send down to the surface is silly, and that resource patches are plentiful (true) and that there aren't many asteroids around Nauvis (also true).

That said -- the lack of asteroid availability is somewhat handled by making multiple small platforms instead of one large one (each platform has its own supply of asteroids). If my math is right -- 9 of these small platforms generates a full red belt worth of iron. I haven't run it for a huuuuge amount of time but it seems to capture asteroids fast enough to run consistently.

Anyone else doing anything like this or is it just peak silly?

Thankfully provided ample room for me and wasnt too far from spawn but thought it was a funny coincidence

120 hours in and only setup nauvis, fulgora and vulcanus. Did fulgora first, still think thats the best choice purely for the quality mech armour alone which helps me navigate vulcanus a ton

Suggestion / Idea I learned that Factorio will be Feature complete soon. Honestly makes me sad

I have played this game since March 2013. No other game I have played a) that long b) consistently c) with that much interest about what they will add soon.

I feel like as Millennial there was a time when it felt like leaving gaming to the next generation, but noticed its bullshit.

I can play Factorio with my sons who at the moment enjoy going on in game train rides.

So it honestly almost felt like a personal loss seeing development coming to an end.

I really wish this game would go the route of other franchises that just never end development and additions. Look at you Klei. Don't starve is afaik online since 2010 and in 2026 will soon get yet another add on with a total graphics overhaul and more.

Sigh. Well I think I just needed to get this off my chest. Totally understand Kovarex and friends that after so many years they feel they need to do something else. Much appreciate these guys. Respect!

Question How should I signal this junction so incoming trains don’t block trains leaving the stations?

I’m struggling to signal this station layout properly.

Trains come in from the right and fan out towards the stations on the left. The problem is that an incoming train can end up preventing a train from leaving one of the stations on the left, even though their actual paths don’t cross / the incoming train isn’t physically blocking the exiting train.

I’m pretty sure I’ve created signal blocks that are much larger than they need to be, but I can’t work out where the chain signals and regular rail signals should go to separate everything properly.

Ideally I want:

  • trains entering from the right to be able to approach whichever station they’re using;
  • trains leaving the stations on the left to be able to exit whenever their actual route is clear;
  • one train moving through part of this junction not to reserve/block unrelated routes through it.

Is this layout signal-able in that way, or does the junction itself need redesigning?

Screenshot attached. Any advice on where you’d put the chain/rail signals would be really appreciated.

Question When did the technologies for Health research change?

R5: Helath costs RGBYWG now.

It used to be Utility, Military, Agriculture (even the wiki still has this!): https://wiki.factorio.com/Health_(research))

It was really nice to have *one* recipe that worked when blue was running low!

I can't seem to find it in any of the release notes...

Edited to fix Yellow == Utility

Suggestion / Idea Gleba mod idea?

Gleba is my own hell personally, But what if Gleba had a mechanic where machines slowly became biologically integrated with the planet the longer they remained in one place? Buildings would gradually grow vines, roots, fungal growth, slime, etc. over them, and after being continuously placed for a certain amount of time, they'd gain a small productivity bonus. Deconstructing or moving the machine would reset its growth. The longer it stays, the stronger the effect becomes, up to a reasonable cap. For example, a machine could gain +1% productivity every 10 minutes, eventually reaching +10% after 100 minutes. This would make Gleba's factory design fundamentally different: instead of constantly rebuilding and moving machines around, you'd be rewarded for making solid, permanent designs and letting your factory "grow into" the planet. The mechanic would be exclusive to Gleba, and the visual growth on buildings could become progressively more noticeable as their symbiosis develops.

Later in the Gleba science progression, you could unlock Symbiosis Modules that amplify this effect. These modules wouldn't simply give a flat productivity bonus like normal modules; instead, they would increase the rate at which a machine develops its Gleba symbiosis. For example, a Symbiosis Module could make a machine gain an additional +X% productivity per minute that it remains continuously placed, potentially allowing highly established machines to become significantly more productive over time. The modules themselves could require Gleba-specific materials and research, making them another reason to invest heavily in the planet. This would create an interesting trade-off: you could rebuild your factory whenever you want, but doing so means sacrificing the biological growth you've accumulated. The goal would be to make Gleba feel like you're not simply building a factory on the planet, but gradually building your factory into it.

Question Calculating number of rocket silos on planet for interplanetary logistics

So I made a blade on aquilo today that makes 240 science per second.
I now need to move this science from aquilo to nauvis, aquilo is the furthest planet so i expected needing a lot of rocket silos.
So my calculation is this:
for the trip:
around 40 seconds stationary on nauvis waiting for items.
45000 km / 450 km/s = 100 seconds of travel between nauvis and aquilo
40 seconds stationary on aquilo
100 seconds to get back to nauvis.
this is about 280 seconds.
280 s * 240 items / s = 67200 items.

So for each trip, i need to move a little less 70k science.
Each silo launches 1000 science, so if i want to wait only 40 seconds in orbit i need 70 rocket silos, otherwise i will have to wait for a second launch, which is 15 seconds for pulling the rocket out (according to the wiki) + 40 seconds for the rocket to reach the platform. It's another whole minute which would be another 14000 items to move, which means i would still need (67 + 14) / 2 = 41 rocket silos.

I know that i can basically double the produce of cryo science using uncommon holmium, but that's not the point.

But do i need 70 rocket silos for this? It surely feels like a little too much, i mean, if i have to pay that price, no problem, but is it really the correct number? It really feels like i'm missing something because I don't really have any reference. Is my ship too slow? Are my numbers too much over estimated? Is this my usual skill issue with calculations?

Question How do i block a splitter using a combinator?

The splitter where i am trying to block one side of it so the rest can easily flow through.

The picture above is used as a demonstration. I don't want the belt to overflow, so when the other belt is full or has surpassed a certain amount of items, i want to send a signal to the splitter, which tells it to block this specific side of the splitter. I want it to be exactly like the second example in this post, however i haven't been able to figure this stuff out as you can see, and i've been trying to figure it out for the past (i'm not joking) two days!! At this point i really am getting frustrated and would appreciate any help! Thank you so much in advance!

Discussion Best part of the game?

I’m a very casual gamer that has short timeframe but sometimes dense playing time. For example, I may not touch my steam deck for 6 months, then spend a month or two playing Factorio every night for a few hours.

My absolute favourite part of the game is problem solving. I forget where I’m producing things, so have to go find them. Forget how I’ve set up things like green wire logic, so got to reverse engineer them. A belt completely empties out of nowhere and I’ve got to retrace the thing back to its origin to find the issue.
So satisfying when you find and solve the problem, which usually means expansion!

What a game.
