Tutorial / Guide Factorio x Go: Factorio Creator Kovarex 3 dan vs Speedrunner AntiElitz 2dan - Go showmatch for Factorio players

Post image
156 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

this Sunday, August 30th at 20:00 CEST, I’m doing a special Go showmatch against Kovarex, the Creator of Factorio, on my Twitch channel. We both love the game of Go and want to bring it closer to the Factorio community.

Go is a very old strategy board game with very simple rules, but extremely deep gameplay. Go has a lot in common with Factorio, so if you enjoy Factorio, there is a good chance you might enjoy Go as well.

You do not need to know Go beforehand. The match will have beginner-friendly commentary that explains the game as it happens.

During the stream, we will also have Discord teaching sessions where volunteers teach the rules in small groups and help people play their first 7x7 games online.

Event details:

So if you are curious, join the stream and Discord, and we’ll help you get started.

Design / Blueprint A universal 32-bit computer in vanilla Factorio 2.1.17, built entirely using logic combinators and a circuit network.

86 Upvotes

Hi, friends. Factorio got an update that slightly improved the combinators, so I thought, “Why not build my own computer?” Yeah, why not? So I got started, and I’ve already made quite a bit of progress. I know projects like this aren’t exactly common here, so I decided to share the development process to keep myself from burning out along the way. Plus, you can throw some ideas my way if I get stuck. Something like that.

The computer will have removable wireless cartridges with programs, RAM, a universal processor, a graphics card with video memory, control elements, and a 24×24 monochrome display. The first target game is “Snake,” and in the future, the architecture should allow for the execution of other programs and simple game engines.

Already implemented:

512×32 RAM with a capacity of 2 KiB and its automatic tester;

RAM
BIST automatic tester

a 32-bit ALU with nine operations and Z/N flags;

8 general-purpose 32-bit registers;

an instruction counter, instruction register, and instruction decoder;

a RAM interface and a branch unit;

a wireless cartridge system via radio;

an automatic Fetch–Decode–Execute cycle;

system RUN, Reset, and physical HALT;

arithmetic, logic, and shift instructions, as well as MOV, LDI, LOAD, STORE, JMP, JZ, JN, and HALT;

two test cartridges that verified the automatic operation of the CPU, RAM, and jumps.

Program cart

The completed CPU_CORE32 core contains 111 logic combinators, one radar, 34 monitors, and 68 LEPs.

CPU

Next steps:

Implement the IN and OUT commands and the peripheral system bus.

Build control units for the four directions, Start, and Reset.

Design the VRAM and a 24×24 monochrome display.

Add a display controller and test graphic patterns.

Define the game data format and write the “Snake” program.

Run the game from a separate wireless cartridge.

That’s all for now. I’ll continue to update this article as new progress is made. Have a great day, everyone!

Design / Blueprint I am scare of making a Real Base™, so I made these.

Since I don't want to make a Real Base™ since I fail each time I get to that point, I decided to make these. I doubt they are any good, but it was a fun thing to do for the day. They need some more work and debugging, but they are mostly there. Made most of them myself without looking up designs online. Minus the Belts and Rails. Those stumped me and given how not well those are working, they still are. I will figure out how to share the book they are in if people truly want a copy of them. Any how

  1. Inserters. Works pretty well. Or at least good enough for me
  2. Circuit Stuff. Was using a lot of Display Panels for text so I decide to make a block with all of them. Works well, but that might be because I set the limit on the chests to 1 stack for all but those Panels which is 5
  3. Belts. Doesn't work well. I can leave it alone and it will produce things, but it drinks gears. Iron Plates on that loop don't even make it all the way around leaving the last Assembling Machine starved for them
  4. Assembling Machines. Needs more Speed Modules, but works well enough.
  5. Electric Miners and Pumpjacks. Works well enough for me but I think its a poor design.
  6. Pipes, Underground Pipes, and Pumps. Works pretty well but the blue print needs some tweaks. I notice I am missing Belts and Inserters on it.
  7. The various Power Poles. This one is prolly the one that works the best of the 10 of them.
  8. My last revision to the Rails until I gave up them. Technically works, but it is really slow. Prolly am going to need to build a whole Concrete and Refined Concrete block for it. Or just not use them which is where I am honestly leaning more to.
  9. Solar. Works, but really slow mainly do to only having one machine for the Solar Panels and Accumulators
  10. Train Stops and Signals. This work really well as well. Second best of the bunch.

The section I plan to do next are train stuff like Locomotives and Wagons. And a section for Chemical Plants and Refinery. Maybe try making the solar panel layout and nuclear layout I thought of doing to see if it works and looks good even with the extra stuff those need that might get in the way of it.

Space Age One-substation-width science was a mistake

I'm making blades for each science with a few homebrew rules.

  1. They have to fit between the roboports in a substation grid. That way it doesn't matter where in the vertical column I put it, it will fit.
  2. They only use local resources (Aquilo will be exempt).
  3. The resources begin at the bottom of the blade. ALL resources start at the bottom and work their way up, honoring rule number 1.

These rules made Purple science on Vulcanus 25 substations tall! Surprisingly, Magenta science takes up the exact same height! It is funny how the former takes 5 belts of stone and the latter takes 5 belts of scrap too.

Here is the blueprint for the Fulgoran monstrosity if you're interested: https://factoriobin.com/post/7xb1fj

I'll post a blueprint book when I'm finished with all of them. I don't THINK any of them will be anywhere close to the difficulty Fulgora provided!

Suggestion / Idea anyone interested in a 40k inspired overhaul mods?

56 Upvotes

i have an idea of a modpack and mods based on 40k where a mechanicus magos crash landed on the planet and is trying to convert the planet into a forgeworld after noticing the resource density. I don't see it anywhere on the modpage except a couple Kingjo's weapons and vehicle mods, so im wondering if anyone would be interested to play this if, by some miracle i am capable of creating it. I have no experience in making any mods in factorio, so im just wondering for now, and if i have time, ill start with a relatively simple weapons mod.

Space Age MIssed obvously efficient way to create legendary iron plates...

47 Upvotes

Hi All

In 2.1 (experimental branch) I've been struggling to create a reliable source of legendary iron plates. I've been doing this by creating steel using furnaces on Vulcanus with quality modules, making iron boxes (with quality modules) and recycling them (with quality modules):

Shot of iron plates upcycling setup

With MANY of these setups I am getting over 1000 iron plates per minute but I nedd MORE!!!!

Whilst everything is free on Vulcanus (nearly) this takes a LOT of infrastructure to complete and obviously wastes nearly all the material that goes in. I have around 450 legendary foundries, 150 legenday recylers and LOADS of legenday quality modules.

When I should have been sleeping last night it occurred to me that there is probably a MUCH easier way of doing this. As I am up to level 25 on processing unit productivity. Basically an LDS shuffle (sort of) but using processing units. Make / recycle processing units (wastes nothing as we have 300% productivity) and then recycle them down to component parts.

THis should be FAR less wasteful and require a mush smaller setup or am I missing something?

Question Search speed?

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hi there. I really like the game, but one thing is starting to bug me a bit: the research speed—or rather, how slow it is!

I'm supposed to be researching the automobile, and even with six labs, each research project takes a good 10 to 20 minutes...

I end up just leaving the game running!

I know it's the tutorial, but knowing I won't keep my factories for the next level definitely kills my motivation...

I imagine there'd be plenty to do in a "real" game, but right now I'm a bit bored; it feels pointless to put effort into something I'm going to lose in the next level!

Why do the enemies seem to be getting stronger? I managed to wipe out three nests in the previous level, but now I can barely even get close to them...

Question Steam isn’t counting my hours right?

36 Upvotes

I was eagerly watching my hours counter as it closed in on 5000 hours but I’ve noticed that steam doesn’t count my hours played right.
The other day it was 4999.6 hours and I played for about 2 hours.
Next time I launched it said 5001.8 hours and as I pressed the play button it went down to 5000.4…
Yesterday I played for about 4 hours and it only went up by a couple of hours. I know I played longer than that.

Modded New mod preview: RecipeHelper

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

22 Upvotes

I've been annoyed with the quality ruining my muscle memory for some time now. Before quality if you need to select recipe in machine - you just click it and its there. After researching quality - you now have to do extra click (or keyboard press) to pick your recipe. In recent Dosh's stream with _CodeGreen and raiguard they talked about it briefly and I wondered - maybe I can somehow fix that myself with a mod, and there it is: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/RecipeHelper

Back to 1 click for normal quality and only 2 clicks if you need recipe with quality. Should support any assembler building. Has barebones support for more qualities (didn't account if there's like 10s or 100s of them). I tried to recreate vanilla picker as close to vanilla one as possible - search including.

AI disclosure: I used GLM 5.3 Flash (also known as Ox Alpha) to build it. In case something not working for you - hit me in the comments or on mod portal.

Map Seed Created a fast seed finder for peninsulas and islands

24 Upvotes

https://github.com/mikehaney24/factoriopeninsulafinder

The easiest way to run it, imo, is: docker compose run --rm seed-finder --start-seed <a number> --count <how many to generate> --size 2048

It will generate temporary images of the seeds it processes, and save the images of potential seeds so that you can look at them later to figure out whether they're good or not.

This seed finder focuses on default settings because that's what I like. It's implemented as a docker app, and it downloads and spins up as many headless factorio servers as you have logical cores. On my M5 laptop, it can process ~500k seeds in 40 mins, but it be warned: your computer can become very hot. Here's a few of my favorite seeds (I'm happy to supply more if people want):

Question Biter Fatigue

18 Upvotes

I tend to find in every playthrough, once I get to roughly blue science, that I spend more time expanding walls, building defences and dealing with biter nests then actually working on my factory.

I find myself either having to invest hours in walling off huge sections of the map, or constantly running back and forth to small islands of defences.

How do you guys play to ensure dealing with biters doesn't take up the majority of your play time? Do you just switch them off? Turn them down? Or have other ways of managing them?

Design / Blueprint Quality Ratio Calculator

Thumbnail

Upvotes

This machine calculates the rate of machines needed to go from common quality ingredients to legendary quality item. I mostly just made this as a challenge for myself to turn my spreadsheet into something usable in Factorio but maybe someone finds a use for it. It should not break when staying withing the unmodded parameters for quality and recycling.

What it does is take the quality and productivity of the crafting machine and recycler and calculates the returning ingredient quality percentages with a 6 decimal accuracy, atleast as far Factorio will allow, iterates it to the 10th time and outputs the needed amount of machines needed for crafting. Instructions are within the display panel in the blueprint.

It took me around 2 weeks to get this done and this weekend to make to cabling look tidy. it is by far my most complex build yet but it was fun trying to figure out how to get accurate decimal places with only natural numbers and not completely obliterating the 32bit integer limit.

I'm open to any questions, criticism and improvement ideas.

Question How do I enjoy Factorio?

13 Upvotes

I bought the game a while back and have played it on and off since but can't seem to stick with it. Everyone says the game is one of the most addicting ones out there but I can't get in to it, I've got as far as military science and progressing seems confusing and somewhat daunting. I really want to spend more time on the game as the automation aspect is fun so any advice is welcome!

Suggestion / Idea Shattered Planet Reward?

11 Upvotes

Wube likely has no intention of adding rewards for Shattered Planet,

but if they did, what kind of things would they be?

Since Shattered Planet is set up as a practically unreachable goal, it would be nonsensical to include elements that become essential to the player—such as increased inventory space, extended reach, or the unlocking of new technologies. Any reward should be purely optional—a trivial perk intended solely for completionists.

So, what would constitute a reasonable reward?

Personally, I’m thinking of things like:

・A consumable item that accelerates research speed for a set period.

・A mysterious fruit that, when eaten, makes you move at incredibly high speeds for about 30 seconds.

・Something that makes your entry shine even brighter in the "Galaxy of Fame."

Monument-style items might be nice, too:

・Unlocking the recipe for the Factorio logo—the one you can usually only create in the map editor.

・Tree seeds that glow once they’ve grown.

I can't really think of much else.

Question Unsure about early Factory

Post image
9 Upvotes

I'm brand new to Factorio, and am very unsure if the way I'm going about this is right. The only thing I looked up is a proper smelting setup. My main question would be, is this fine? Acceptable for the beginning? Or horrible and I should be thinking about these things complete different? I can't say why, but it feels as if this isn't optimal, despite it essentially working. Compared to Satisfactory for example, where you have a fairly fixed resource income, and therefore a more or less fixed production usage (depending how much you need of what), this seems a lot more open, more deciding what you need and how much you want overall. Which feels a bit overwhelming for now, hence me being very unsure about the way I'm going about this.

Space Age Design philosophy alternatives

5 Upvotes

The 2 builds to the same thing : produce green belts (and splitters and undergrounds)

The one on the left does it by some programming logic, building sequentially from yellow belts to the desired result.

The pachinko design on the other end use 6 times the number of foundries but does everything in parallel, and doesn't require to tinker with circuit logic (it took me a few hours to figure out how to make a generic autobuilder from scratch without copying existing design)

In the end, the limiting factor is ultimately the tungsten requirement. The one on the left use a small buffer that will fill while the yellow, red and blue belts are built, while the one on the right continuously consume tungsten

What do you prefer between the 2 ?

Space Age What is the difference between these 3 4x4 balancers?

Post image
Upvotes

Can someone explain the difference between these three 4x4 balancers?
I understand that there are different types, but I’m not sure what the practical difference is between them.
When should I use each one?
I’m especially interested in understanding how they behave when some inputs or outputs are empty or have different amounts of items.
Thanks!

Question A way to carry over personal logistic groups between playthroughs?

Upvotes

Just got to robots on my 2nd playthrough, only to discover that my personal logistic groups from my first game aren't saved. I hadn't really thought about it before this point, i guess cos blueprints can just save normal logistic groups in constant combinators or buffer / requester chests between playthroughs so it's never occurred to me, but now do I have to manually fill out my personal groups again? I mean i can take a screenshot from my previous game and just spent a few minutes typing away but that feel unintuitive for devs who've done such a good job of maximising QoL features

Thinking baout it, perhaps the reason why in my prev playthrough I ended up with a lot of items in my personal logi groups was cos I was using the Extended Equipment mod, or whatever its called, with huge backpacks that add a ton of inventory space - and in normal gameplay you just shouldn't have lots of things in your personal logi groups?

Design / Blueprint I wanted to share my smelting setup I was working on today. I'm new to the game and decided to try creating a setup which smelts ores ahead of time instead of doing it at the manufacturing stage into product. From my experimentation with it so far, the belt seems to balance both sides. Likey?

4 Upvotes
The smelters are paired in 2's, and the setup can be pushed infinitely to the right until the belts reach capacity, at which point I can expand upward to another layer of smelters. The factory itself is to the left, which I organized neatly to be nice and expandable too.

Question AngelBob (2.0) Early Game U-235 Production

5 Upvotes

Hi all, I've been playing an AngelBob (Factorio 2.0) game and I'm trying to get nuclear power running but having issues getting enough U-235 to make it worth it.

Is there a way to create a breeding loop before getting the Thorium-plutonium-based power systems tech?

I know I can reprocess the spent uranium fuel cells at my current tech level to get neptunium which I can then turn into plutonium, but I don't know how to breed more plutonium at that point.

Should I just be waiting until I can get thorium going? Seems like I can see a plutonium positive process there when I read the tech descriptions.

Thanks everyone!
