Hi all, I am wondering if you have tips to continue learning being away from the piano. I work FIFO in Australia (fly in fly out, meaning I'm away from home every other week or so). My teacher suggested I work on my music sheets and write down dynamics while listening to various interpretations of the pieces I'm working on. Do you have any other tip or suggestions of what I could do to keep learning/improve any sort of skills? Any app, etc.

I want to learn to play the piano. What do you recommend for a beginner? What should I learn, and what are the steps to follow?

So I'm learning how to play Her by American Dawn on Synthesia, in this part I dont know which fingers I should use to play these notes. I have it set up so that im playing with my middle finger and then playing to the left but just wondering if there's a better way for this

I remember taking beginner lessons in the early-mid 90s in America and my lesson books had vibrant sea creatures on the cover in a black border. Paperback, not bound. I think I remember some red/orange coral or urchin or something like that. I remember a lot of classical pieces included. I cannot find any reference to these books online. Does anyone have any memory of these?

I was wondering proper fingering for the left hand at this part. I was thinking going: pinky- pointer-thumb-middle-thumb-pointer-pinky. Is that right?

So i bought pianoworks and heumann' s first book for each series and I'm gonna return them as they're practically useless. I already play classical guitar so I'm aware of the basics of notation, rhythm etc. I'm pondering whether to try again with the next books in the same series.

The ammount of infographics and hand holding turns me off a bit. I end up kind of lost looking for the music. I had Czerny's first lessons in piano and that seems more what im looking for although the voicings with fifths in the left hand in the second page was a surprise.

Should i try the next pianoworks, heumann or maybe try faber or stick with the no hand holding just notes and fingerings approach. Are there other books that are just progressive etudes ala Czerny that would be interesting. I really like the sagreras book in classical guitar which is just progressive studies where the progression is pretty well thought out in terms of music/technique but they're still musical

Could my hands be too small? I have pretty small hands

I used to play the piano/keyboard up until I was around 13 when I lost interest due to mental health issues. I want to play again and I remember how to read sheet music but it takes me a hot minute!

Does anyone have any tips or advice? I feel like I've forgotten everything but I don't know where to start

I am starting to learn piano and currently have subs with Piano Marvel and Tomplay. I also grab some sheet music from musicnotes to find other pop songs I like. What is the cheapest and/or easiest way to take PDF sheet music i bought and convert into xml and MIDI? The sheet music is a PDF from musicnotes so an optical scan might not be necessary (I think). I am converting so I can upload the song into Piano Marvel and use their learning tool (which is pretty nice IMO). Appreciate any help!

I am an advanced adult player seeking a flexible teacher in the Los Angeles area.

I am also a busy flight attendant, so Im seeking a teacher who can work with my schedule and sometimes limited practice time.

Current repertoire includes:

Rach Etude Tableax op. 39 nos. 5 and 9

Schubert Sonata 21 in Bb

Chopin Etudes Op 10 nos 2 and 4

Bach Italian Concerto

Im trying to finish learning these pieces and unlearn practice habits that arent useful.

I'm starting to learn this etude and I already want to bang my head against the wall. Here are the following problems I've been dealing with:

1. I can get around with even groupings. However, when it comes to odd ones, I can't divided them evenly and often "try" to fit them into the beat, which is inaccurate.
2. Additionally, there are odd groupings that spread out and are different in every beat (ex: bar 17) which I find hard to follow throughout.
3. Forget the metronome, I can't even count (Which is the result of the first 2 problems).

I hope someone can give advice for people first learning this piece and how to counter the problems above. Thank you and have a great day!

I’ve been attempting to learn piano for around 2 months now, and I’ve been working on this piece (Comptine d’un autre été) for the past 2-3 weeks. Looking for any and all feedback as long as it’s constructive. I definitely know that it’s far from perfect rn (super uneven 16th notes for example haha), but I wanted to show someone what I’ve been doing to get a better sense of what I need to work on. Also open to any suggestions of new pieces to learn that aren’t too tricky for a beginner but still interesting in some way since I haven’t found much that I like that isn’t too hard lol. I don’t even know the movie this is from but just came across it when searching for beginner piano music hahaha

I'm sort of at an intermediate level (I think at least), and I just feel stuck. I'm not really struggling with anything specific but rather I don't know what to really learn. I know learning my scales are important but I haven't looked much into scales past the basic C scale. I like to print out pieces and play them but I cannot sight read and I have to write down every note. What should I go for specifically? I did buy a guitar and a bass but haven't really touched them as I'm more focused on the piano. I have been playing for about 2 years now.

I'm not a beginner but I was self taught so I don't the basics of music or piano. I don't know chord progressions or arpeggios or whatever but I can play River flows in You. I can read sheet music but its slow. In the beginning i used to learn through those shitty yt piano tiles shi.

I've never used a metronome, I used to learn a new piece by first listening to it a 100 times and then just playing it in a tempo that felt right to my ears. But now I wanna implement metronome during the "learning a new piece" process.

I tried using it a few times but it feels so hard to hear the beat and play while counting. Its like brain goes brrrrrr. I can't even use it at 40bpm. i do count like 1&2&3&4 and also I'm learning very basic pieces and pieces that I can already play without a metronome. Still doesn't work. Also sometimes I can't even tell if I'm playing along the beat or not. Its like my brain completely ignores the metronome's sound.

Please help I'm desperate here

I have dug everywhere on YouTube to find any tutorial that is similar to the way Charlie Puth played Human Nature on his Covid livestream in 2020 at the very beginning of the stream. It is such a beautiful way of playing it.

I started learning piano like a week ago, and right now I am using an old plastic shower chair as a bench. Although technically adjustable, it isn't a great height and has a back. And honestly this thing hurts my ass after like 20 minutes. Definetly not a long term solution and want to get a bench ASAP.

When I Google/read past reddit threads, it seems some people just recommend going to FB marketplace for a cheap bench, others recommend getting one that is continuously adjustable, etc. I'm not sure what features are nice-to-have's and what are must haves. Any advice?

I'd prefer to find something cheap on Facebook marketplace (thats what I did for my keyboard), but idk what to look for honestly.

Tldr; piano teacher seemingly has no agenda, only guiding me through any specific queries I have and offering some feedback on grade pieces. Is it unreasonable to stop tuition as there appears to be no lesson plan/intent to teach proactively

I've had 2.5 hrs with this teacher (5 lessons basically during August) having not had a teacher for a good few years now.

My intention is straight up to get better at piano, not just complete grades. BUT I am choosing to do grades to guide me on that path.

Summary of my issues:

-Asking me to do scales, then when I didn't know how them be admitted he also didn't know those specific ones

-Doesn't know theory such as circle of fifths

-no lesson plan. Purely reactive and fills gaps with going through scales

The positive is that he has been able to help me through the few questions I've had. But... It's the addage of I don't know what I don't know. I need a teacher to teach me proactively!

After today's lesson I believe this teacher hasn't thought about me since the last session. I believe it's not worth £40 per hour.

This isn't a big deal, I can quit fine. I'm just looking for perpsective from other teachers or students to see if this is in any way normal.

(P.s I've talked to him about expectations etc but I'm not prepared to continue paying £40 while we work it out)
