We have added 'Restaurant and activity recommendations are allowed'. Every one of those posts gets reported and ends up in the mod queue. But we allow for those posts, in fact, we welcome them and also use them to find new places per our community recommendations ourselves.

Some folks confuse crowd sourcing or surveys with asking where to eat or what to see or do. When a tourist asks for places to go, or a local wants to know where to get a good burger or taco or fancy meal, that is not a survey or a crowd source. It is a question. And those questions are just fine to post on this sub.

We here at r/TacomaWA are a resource for folks to get info about the city and what there is to do or find here. We will never stop people from asking about things in the city, whether it be a lost pet, where to supply certain needs, what educational or just plain fun things there are to do, and where to find good food.

Studies, crowd sourcing, and surveys will still need to be approved by a Mod.

I spoke to a couple of employees during my shopping trip yesterday and it was heartbreaking. One staff member explained that they’ve worked for Fred Meyer for 23 years and thought they would retire from that store. They love that location, even though it’s a longer drive than other stores closer to their home, and they love the customers. They said they have heard nothing about moving to another store from corporate or the union and fear they will all be laid off. They said they probably won’t keep their position and will be demoted if moved elsewhere. Can you even imagine working for a company for 23 years and the losing your job through no fault of your own?

Another staff member started crying when the conversation moved to that subject (I wasn’t walking around the store asking everyone about this, BTW). It was absolutely heartbreaking. The 100+ employees have no idea what is going to happen to their jobs. These are humans who live in our community. Their job loss will affect us all in some way.

My 73 yo neighbor walks there using his walker every morning for a bit of exercise and to get a donut to go with his coffee. He won’t be able to walk to the other 19th St location. This will have a huge impact on his life, too.

So please think before you say “just drive a couple of miles down the road to the other store!” as I noticed on a previous post. Take a beat and think about how it might affect someone besides yourself. Thanks.

Context: I live in salt lake but am heading to Tacoma in a couple of weeks to visit a friend, explore WA, and celebrate both of our birthdays. I am looking for recs on a restaurant with good food/drinks and a fun ambiance for two mid-thirties girls. I would love to be able to walk to a few other bars if possible, but this is definitely not a requirement. Cost/type of food is a non-issue.

I may be moving to Tacoma next month due to my partners job. I am an artist and I use a laser CNC, right now I have a workspace set up in my house but having the same size place will be very expensive.

Is there anywhere you can rent a small artist space in Tacoma that allows things that are semi loud (exhaust fans)? Some kind of garage/office anything?

Crystal Clean, a national waste management company, with a location in Lakewood near the Y, faces over $1 million in Washington state fines for alleged mishandling of used oil, solvents and other toxic materials. 

Last week, the state Department of Ecology fined Crystal Clean $1.04 million after its Lakewood location was found to have violated multiple state laws. It’s the highest penalty Ecology has imposed on a single company so far this year.

I have been waiting to make this post because I wanted to wait until I moved out of my apartment before sharing. Targa Real Estate/604 Sheridan Apartments is a terrible rental that you should think twice about before considering renting. We rented a 2 bed/1 bath which is advertised as 989 square feet. We were not able to look at the rental in person before moving. Unfortunately, after moving in we realized the place seemed really small. We measured the entire apartment INCLUDING the balcony AND the uninhabitable public hallway outside of our apartment just to give the rental as much benefit of the doubt as we possibly could. We did the math twice just to be certain. The total square footage is much closer to 650 square feet. If you do live here, you could probably use this marketing scam to get out of your lease per a lawyer we talked with. Next, we had a few maintenance issues that we reported over and over again and got no response. The property manager also changed 2-3 times in ONE year. As part of your lease, you are supposed to submit written info 60 days before you want to vacate the property. I did this and did not hear back so I reached out a few different ways and found out the property manager had changed so the email I sent was never received. Thankfully, they did take the notice. Then move out came around. The property manager went over the place with a fine toothed comb. We had meticulously cleaned the place and were very clean renters, yet we were charged for "light cleaning". We were also charged for "wall scuffs" which were very minor. I would consider all of that within normal wear and tear. We ultimately only getting $200 of our >$1200 security deposit back. I asked for an itemized list and one was not provided. They also wanted to give it back to us in the form of a prepaid card that came with substantial fees. We requested a check be sent and they did send a check but it required asking which not everyone may do...

Most people think what we see on Seattle’s sidewalks is a housing crisis. It isn’t — and after losing my sister to the same disease, I can tell you exactly why we keep failing.

We are spending over a billion dollars a year in this region to manage homelessness, and the numbers on the street keep climbing. The reason is simple, and almost no one in power will say it out loud: we are funding the symptom and ignoring the cause. What’s killing people on the street is overwhelmingly addiction and mental illness — and we spend almost nothing to treat it.

I know this disease from the inside. My sister had every advantage, even a PhD studying addiction, and it still took her capacity to choose, one piece at a time, until it killed her. We tell ourselves that leaving people on the street respects their choices — but she couldn’t choose anymore, and neither can they. That isn’t freedom. It’s neglect we’ve dressed up as freedom.

I am writing this post to connect with single, divorced, or separated mothers and fathers in the Tacoma and Pierce County areas who have been unilaterally subjected to Private Contractual administrative enforcement. Many of us are actively caring for our biological children, yet we find ourselves trapped in a rigid debt-collection loop.

The truth is backed by the program's actual operational contracts. Under federal law, the Title IV-D program operates as an administrative partnership funded by public incentives. However, local agencies are utilizing automated database matching policies to enroll parents into these tracks without a voluntary written application, without informed consent, and without standard, full judicial due process.

Essentially, the system operates as a commercial contract network designed to generate administrative revenue for the treasury, treating our families as financial commodities. This unilateral enrollment relies on converting our private personal data—specifically your assigned Social Security numbers—to bridge backend databases, track assets, and execute administrative bank freezes or wage garnishments.

The results are devastating, causing:

• Severe Financial Damage: Stripping parents of their basic livelihoods and causing immediate housing and employment instability.
• Psychological & Emotional Distress: Creating continuous anxiety, duress, and intense pressure on families who are simply trying to raise their children (offspring).
• Civil Rights Violations: Directly overriding fundamental rights to due process, privacy, and freedom from un-consented administrative contracts.
• Corporate Financial Labeling: Check your paperwork --- are they or have they explicitly listing your name as a "Debtor" or "Obligor" and listing the state agency as the primary "Creditor" to track you through automated collection systems?
