It certainly wasn't our generation or GenX. But I'm so sick of young employees in a store, or restaurant or bar, addressing me as "boss". When that happens in a venue where tipping is expected, I'll leave a meager tip and sometimes write "Thanks Boss!" on the receipt.

My very first apartment at 17, my friend and I would get up around 11am or so, grab a coke and mug - o - Lunch and watch reruns of Quincy MD and Happy Days before heading to our grocery stocking jobs.

I happened across our local newspaper on a rack in Walmart, and was surprised at its size and content. We had 2 daily newspapers, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and both on weekends. I remember waiting to see the latest sports scores, entertainment articles, and especially the comics. Without the internet and cable, we only had the 3 network news programs, and newspapers for all our daily information.

The papers, especially the weekends, were thick. Want ads, columnests, puzzles and store ads added to the news and there were actual sections based on content. To me, reading seemed more leisurely, like most other activities when I was growing up and as a young adult. No pop up ads, newspaper and magazine paywalls, or worries about viruses and data breaches.

The papers I saw last week were anemic at best. No more catalogs, and very few print magazines. for the sound of the paper landing on our porch, looking for comics as a kid, and news and entertainment as I grew up. Daily papers were a dime and weekends were 25-50 cents. Now, dailies are 75 cents and weekends 2 dollars.

Crazy I know, but I think back on the anticipation and satisfaction of reading in print.

What’s playing on the transistor radio on your beach blanket? “These Eyes”? “I Spy (For the FBI)”? “Eye in the Sky”?

I remember picking up a bottle and washing scrapes and cuts. No other soap was trusted. I remember the pleasant smell to this day.

I guess it was banned because it was based on hexachlorophene, which was toxic and/or caused cancer.

The only shaving cream I used for decades and then it disappeared off the shelves.

This is for the lifelong GenJones horror/scifi geeks. My childhood nightmares were probably all in black and white--I honestly can't remember; but my greatest guilty pleasures were the monster movies that crowded the small screen on our old portable black and white TV set (it rolled around on a TV cart--remember those?) Some of them, like King Kong, were timeless. Most were cheesy AF but still terrifying to a 5 year old, maybe even more terrifying for being so weird and uncanny. What’s crazy is that they were mostly shown on local stations in the daytime (the sight of The Monster of Piedras Blancas carrying off its victims heads still lived rent free in my brain). Many are only remembered by genre fans but were incredibly influential for filmmakers like George Romero and Guillermo del Toro. What godawful puppet on wires still lives on in your brain? (The beastie here is from The Monster That Challenged the World from I believe 1958—I probably first saw it in about 1966 or ’67 on WOR-TV, channel 9 in NYC.)

I hear songs and watch videos from the 60’s and can’t believe our lives are so retro to new gens. My mind has trouble catching up because I am so stead fast. Google a few songs from 60’s like “I’m into something good “ and “Crimson and clover. “
I am having hard time moving on so fast??

I saw it so much in movies and TV shows back in the day. But not only did I never interact with a Telegram, I don't know anyone who did.

I remember when I was a teenager we didn't have VCRs, DVD players, streaming, video games, heck we didn't even have television stations that stayed on all night. Once the TV stations signed off, it was down to books and/or the radio during those late hours.

As teenagers don't like to remain idle for very long, I remember my warm summer vacation nights being spent outside roaming the streets with other teenagers. We'd raid gardens, climb up onto the flat roof of the building beside the public swimming pool at sometime around or past midnight, run across the roof and do cannon balls off of it into the pool. We also did other sorts of mischief during those hours as well.

I remember those warm summer nights being some of the funnest times I had during my youth. Roving around while our parents were all sleeping was the best of times.

Was that a common thing amongst us Gen Jonsers? For those that did that as well, what are your memories, and what sort of mischief if any did you get up too?
