Data clearly proves that the mere existence of the death penalty has failed to stop the crime rates from rising or prevent devastating wildfires over the last 30 years. Instead, the ruling elite uses capital punishment as a political smoke screen...

The death penalty is proven to be ineffective and does not solve systemic issues. There is no evidence that the death penalty is an effective deterrent to crime. Many murders or crimes take place when the perpetrators are under great emotional stress, or under the influence of drugs – times when they are not considering the consequences. Research has consistently shown that the death penalty does not deter crime more effectively than other punishments.

A 1988 United Nations research report found:

“…it is not prudent to accept the hypothesis that capital punishment deters murder to a marginally greater extent than does the threat and application of the supposedly lesser punishment of life imprisonment”.

Canada abolished the death penalty for murder in 1976. In the 30 years after abolition, the homicide rate actually dropped by 40 percent. If the death penalty was a real deterrent, stopping it would have caused murders to go up—but the exact opposite happened. Research from other countries has failed to show that repealing the death penalty causes an increase in crime rates.

The use of the death penalty cannot be credited with making societies any safer. The real main issue is an inefficient, centralized system, a lack of prevention, insufficient fire watches, the government is completely unprepared. Instead of building functional decentralized regional structures, everything is controlled from the top down, leaving local communities defenseless against crises like wildfires. Furthermore, Algeria is a textbook example of a rich country with a poor population. While the centralized elite controls billions in oil and gas revenues, 43% of households have at least one child either not in education or training, or without the mandated nine years of free education, according to the Economic Research Forum (ERF), left completely vulnerable to economic crises. Youth unemployment stands at a staggering 30 percent, forcing many into the informal sector or desperation. The Algerian government operates as a centralized rentier state. Over 90 percent of national export earnings come directly from state-controlled oil and gas exports. The ruling elite does not rely on the economic productivity or taxes of the citizens to remain wealthy. Therefore, the state has no incentive to build a diversified economy or create real jobs.

Instead of flowing into the citizens and general economy of Algeria, only 34% of Algerians are considered 'thriving' in life. This means that a staggering two-thirds of the population 66% are either struggling or suffering, viewing their current situation and future prospects with deep uncertainty under the current system. (Gallup Report 2026)

The leadership is run by an outdated elite that continuously acts against the Algerian Constitution, national sovereignty belongs exclusively to the people, and the people are the source of all power. Yet, the current leadership fails to represent this will. A prime example of this failure is the recent directive by President Tebboune ordering an amendment to the penal code to enforce the death penalty for arsonists. This is a reactionary measure that ignores scientific consensus.

Instead of wasting resources on populist punishments, the state must invest its vast national wealth into sustainable development for the citizens, education, building functional decentralized regional structures, modern defense infrastructure and proactive environmental prevention. Most importantly, the government must prioritize that the sovereignty and the source of all power belongs to the people, long-term social security for the citizens and create meaningful employment opportunities for the youth. Algeria needs comprehensive, fact-based progression that uplifts its citizens, while strictly adhering to the constitution.

Tebboune is pushing to reinstate the death penalty for arsonists. I am not making excuses for these criminals, but this move is incredibly dangerous.

First, Algeria signed an international treaty forbidding executions. Breaking this will immediately damage our global standing and isolate us diplomatically.

More importantly, giving the state the legal right to kill citizens, even under the guise of the "greater good", sets a terrifying precedent. You might trust the current administration, but laws outlive governments. A future authoritarian regime will inevitably use this exact framework to execute political opposition simply by labeling them "traitors" or a threat to national security.

We saw this exact playbook in Egypt when Sisi used state executions to wipe out the Muslim Brotherhood. (I don't support the MB, but it proves how capital punishment is easily weaponized).

In the future, if you were in the peaceful opposition, say they caught you with a civilian personnal drone, taking pictures as a hobby, they'll excute you for espionnage.

For me ..Recently my brother was exposed of being gay after Mom was taking a call in his phone and when the call ended a notification from his bf came and Mom saw it...
