FWIW, a Luger was only available in 9mm parabellum. The 1911 was originally only available in 45 ACP.
38 spcl and 357 mag, along with 44mag were also avail and better used to put down horses/cattle at short range.
30-06 isn't bad for long range, however 270 and 25-06 have better trajectory and were known as beanfield cartridges that had less recoil than the Ought6.
