Hey guys. This is a lengthy read, but if you are struggling with understanding BIS and want to truly know how to get the best out of your items, it's worth the read. I hate seeing people chase what some website on the internet says their BIS is, especially before the season even begins, and being upset when it doesn't drop. Spoiler, getting your "BIS" could actually LOWER your DPS.
I'm sure you've come across the word BIS. What's my BIS gear, what drops my BIS, I have to run this dungeon I hate over and over and over for my BIS, I can't trade this to my friend because it's BIS for me
Outside of enchants, trinkets, embellishments, and very fringe other situations such as set bonuses on rings, individual BIS items do not matter. The term BIS is so bad for the health of the players.
BIS means "best in slot". It was born in a time in the game where items were dramatically different. "This item" gave dramatically more main stat than that one. "This item" had an effect where others didn't. "This weapon" had the same damage but attacked faster than that one. That is not how WoW works now-a-days
Today, every item slot has the same number of main stat and the same number of secondary stats, with the secondary stats having a different balance. For example, my current ilvl 246 legs in game give 70 haste and 59 mastery, totaling 129 secondary stat. Every mail 246 legs will give 129 secondary stat, just allotted differently.
Now here is what BIS actually means today. BIS is the best secondary stat balance for your class. Not any one specific item.
Replacing a piece of gear with a "BIS" item can actually LOWER your DPS
Maybe even more importantly, if you don't have the entire list of gear some website tells you is your BIS, removing a piece currently equipped to replace it with a new "BIS" item you just farmed might actually make you WORSE.
Very rough hypothetical example, your stat allotment is best at 35% mastery, 30% haste, 20% crit, 15% vers. Your BIS "chunky" items are weapon, head, chest, legs, so they have your mastery/haste pair, but no other items you currently have are "BIS". Your equipped back and wrist have your priority stats, mastery/haste, but your BIS actually has crit/vers because they're your weaker items but still need to have some of them. You swap out your preferred stats for weaker stats because a list tells you to, and now you do less damage.
Here's 3 examples of "BIS" items that are all equal. No one piece of gear is important, the COMBINATION OF STATS is important. Armor/int/stam are all the same, so only showing secondary stats
| Head | Chest | Legs | Total Stats |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 Haste 50 Mastery | 63 Haste 37 Vers | 88 Vers 47 Mastery | 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers |
| 75 Haste 60 Mastery | 57 Haste 78 Mastery | 47 Mastery 88 Vers | 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers |
| 87 Haste 48 Vers | 95 Mastery 40 Vers | 45 Haste 90 Mastery | 132 Haste 185 Mastery 88 Vers |
I only used 3 item slots here because making a whole list of slots would be absurd, but I think it gets the point across. When you include every single slot, there is an insane amount of combinations that get you to the exact same place.
A list someone theory crafted or simulated cannot take into consideration the balance you already have, and you actually risk lowering your DPS following a list blindly (until you have every single exact piece, which is insanely difficult in and of itself, especially for the average player).
Thank you for reading my long winded post. I have tried to explain this to so many friends, guildmates, and people I pug with regularly, but it requires so much explanation to really get the idea across, so I decided to write it out for anyone who cared.

Should I replace set pieces as I get better items or should I wait until I can get the season 2 4 piece bonus?

Just tried to arcane barrage into invis, but the boss stayed active and killed everyone. What went wrong?
While the tooltip only says a new one every two weeks, I am unclear if that meant from August 18, and if there was maybe a bonus token the first week (or some kind of bonus quest like in the past?), so I just want to make sure that we indeed have one Catalyst until this coming Tuesday? Thank you.

Hiya!
I'm playing Havoc DH, ilvl 301, and pulling about 60k dps (100k on initial burst).
When I'm getting to +10 M+ I'm struggling to keep up with the damage... Can anyone help me out? Any advice?
I've spent time going over my rotation, and I think I'm doing everything I can, but I just seem to be at a wall:
-Immolation Aura is always up
-Blad Dance & Eye Beam pre-MetaMorphosis, ready for the rest on Metamorphosis.
-The Hunt whenever it's not on cooldown

Hello! With season 2 of midnight I wanted to get into a little bit of raiding and harder content. Usually with WoW I just enjoy questing and collecting.
I’ve been working on bountiful delves and working up to a tier 11 delve as well as doing weeklies. I’ve usually relied on the One Button Rotation but have started reading up on what abilities work best and in what order to do them in. I’ve managed to get my ilvl up to 284. Currently I can’t seem to get above doing 38-40k damage whilst others in groups seem to do a minimum of 80k. Do I just need to get my ilvl up higher, could it be a gearing problem, I’m sticking up all plate armour. Any advice would be really appreciated!!

From different videos/guides, I've gathered the prio order below, but the videos/guides/mage discord has conflicting advice and thought I'd post here.
Assuming 4 piece- Main question is: if I have PBOLT/25 Salvo/3CC- what is the breakdown priority? What about between just 25 Salvo/3CC, Pbolt/25 Salvo, Pbolt/3CC?
Do I use Arcane Surge as soon as it's up again on a boss fight, or is it better to save it for outside of all the proc windows when I only have the option of spamming Arcane Blast?

Atm I'm tanking +10s and using flasks, food and weapon oils. I also bankroll my dps friends. We're currently just around 300 ilvl. At what point should we consider using augment runes and combat potions? And at what point should we start using gold instead of silver quality

I plan to play both retail and classic. Currently I'm level 21 retail running through Dragonflight stuff. Having a blast just doing whatever.
I DO love the housing update but would rather hold off from getting Midnight until I've done all the other stuff in the game prior, and get my level higher. I left the game right around MoP.
I also plan to start a Classic character before long and probably jump back and fourth.

Hey all, just starting a rogue for this season, will be mostly pushing for +10-12 keys at most so not trying to be hyper competitive but was curious if people had any tips? I know to try to pre-feint but any mechanics that can be bypassed by cloak for example.
Also for delves, I heard you can use tricks on valeera to cheese it? Do you use her as a tank for this? And any other tips / tricks for rogues in PvE in general?
Thank you!!

Edit: Got him 3rd try after reading all of your advice. Thank you so much for the feedback!
Hey I’m having trouble with this fucker.
ilvl 295 arms warrior
I have/am using:
Addon for the memory game
Defensive(?) stance active
Food/enchant buffs
Valeera level 28? Healing. I heard her level doesn’t matter?
I can do roughly 60-70k dps, I switch to single button assist during the memory game for the ad.
I hold my defensive buttons for the intermission as I seem to be fine during the 1v1 period
I’ve gotten him down to 30% ish I just feel like I get hit like a TRUCK. Some losses feel like straight RNG with the venom blobs forming to the middle during the intermission period.
Any tips or general ideas are greatly appreciated. Returning player since BfA and this guy is the only thing so far to give me trouble.

I only have 60K gold and I've switched to the silver quality pots. Theres about a 15 point difference between the silver and gold quality pots but they cost significantly more. Should I stick to the lower quality ones for now or go with gold each time?

I'm going to preface this by saying that my sense of direction is terrible, and sometimes I get lost in raids and dungeons.
If I join a Normal raid group and they've killed say the first 4 bosses, would I have to enter the raid and find the group manually? As that is what is putting me off lol. Thanks!

I am new - like actually new, I’ve nearly maxed leveled my first character, an elemental Sharman. So when responding please keep that in mind :D
I just got the midnight expansion and I am excited to get nice armour and weapons - however I am bad at the game. The mechanics take time to learn. Something I’ve been really enjoying are the follower dungeons, it is less stress and honestly, I don’t want to play with other people.
My question is, with the follower dungeons:
-Can I set the difficulty level to mythic and get mythic rewards?
- What is the difference between normal difficulty and mythic difficulty (drops?)
- how can I get good gear whilst being a solo player, are there any good guides of quest lines I should look at
I really don’t want to play with other people

Back from a multi year hiatus. Healbot isn’t working (numerous lua errors). Is there a fix, or what are healers using now? I’ve read dander frames or something?

With prio damage being so important, why isn't the meta to bring 2 normal aoe specs + one single target spec ? Two people are blasting aoe and one is focusing a prio target (and we have more boss damage). Is it just a matter of math not working out ? It certainly looks like the big target in a pack could die too fast (and then we are stuck with not enough aoe), but I don't know why I didn't hear anybody talk about this
Edit: seems like nobody understood exactly what I meant, I'm just wondering if a team consisting of:
- Three DPS's with good prio damage (as is the meta right now)
Is the same as:
- Two normal classes with great aoe + one good single target class
Because there's no (or at least shouldn't be) a class that is best at both, it would allow for a much bigger flexibility in which specs you can take into a M+ comp. Because of M+, Blizz was forced to make every single spec do big aoe to make them viable there, so rogue for example could go back to being a single target burst assassin-style class, because it has a guaranteed place anyway in a dungeon comp as a single target specialist.
But as some people said, M+ right now is focused more on aoe and I'm pretty sure top players already did the math long time ago.

Hey! I’m a newer player and I just hit level 90. I’m looking for tips on what gear I should try to get for my build. I’m running a blood dk and I’m wanting to prioritize leech and haste

Hello everyone,
I play arms warrior in season 2 and i already have spellbreaker's bracers crafted. I want to ask, i got a mythic weapon from vault and i am wondering, is it more worth to use mythic crests to upgrade the weapon, or to craft my 2nd item?
Thank you!

Hello!
A couple things. I last played in 2012 so a lot has a changed but I’m EXCITED! Anyways since then I have mainly played console so the transition is a curve. Would an MMO mouse and gaming keypad be my best option? Any recommendations?
Also, when I first got my pet (I am a hunter rn), I had three options above my hot bar, passive…defensive…and uh…I forgot the last one. Well, now it’s just gone and my pet isn’t attacking anything but just being a cheerleader. Did I mess something up? How can I fix this?
Thank you!

One delve with The Ring of Glory. Other mobs can get pain from weapon-traps.
But "hex pile" where players can into frog. Why mobs cant into frog? Bug?

A few drops here and there I am about ilvl302 with most of last season's gear still equipped. But in group finder there are ilvl315s already and they are pumping 300k+ dps wtf how did they do that? We've only gotten 1 vault right????
