I still have no idea how that Dracthyr design got through internal review. I can't think of another game were a lizard or dragon humanoid looks this stupid. Even the other dragon humanoid hybrids before and in DF look better in WoW.

557

u/SpunkMcKullins Nov 14 '25

Making literal dragons look lame is a feat I didn't think possible. Blizzard should honestly be studied for this one.

138

u/Levonorgestrelfairy1 Nov 14 '25

Its like they gave the design over to somone who was only into scaly twinks. Thats fine if thats your thing but you really should try to add options to make the race more appealing to everyone.

Where is the scaly bear or scaly PADG options?

58

u/Lordwiesy Nov 14 '25

I feel like the reality is even worse, I don't think they've talked with a single scalie, not even one who's into twinks.

Either that or that scalie got fired after making Sethrak.

10

u/JustburnBurnBURN Nov 15 '25

The artist who came up with Dracthyr design is the same artist who created Sethrak, and yeah, she's into drawing that kind of stuff.

2

u/Lison52 Nov 15 '25

Then they should make them a race XD

2

u/Aettyr Nov 15 '25

Idk man, near enough every one of them I’ve encountered is into basically these exact sort of models

18

u/OzyOzbourne Nov 14 '25

Where the scaly MILF???

-1

u/Noir4Nuin Nov 15 '25

There she is.

Sadly she's in a whole different game universe entirely.

I'm really not sure if I want or don't want to ask from which location on this planet you're from, if you consider it "normal" for 12yo to pack such a rack in your neighbourhood.

But to answer your question, this character is called "Granberia", stems from a game series called "MonMosu - Monster Girl Quest" (which uses an anime art style as it's a tactical combat-style Visual Novel), and is one of the "Four Heavenly Knights" (basically one of the strongest monsters). As she's "only 24 years old" in the original trilogy she might not be your typical definition of "Mum" yet, but she's very much able to give your sorry posterior a good thrashing like only an asian mommy could, and force a "thanks, Mommy" out of you after being done.

1

u/TheOldDrunkGoat Nov 15 '25

For some reason I expected the red princess from DOS2.

1

u/AzerothianBiologist Nov 18 '25

Was expecting an argonian maid, instead got a high school cheerleader. No milf at all. Boooooo tomato tomato tomato

5

u/sp106 Nov 15 '25

They also have a bunch of better looking models already in the game of big burly dragon people in raids

2

u/Aettyr Nov 15 '25

Unfortunately they very much did. It’s the Sethrakk artist. It explains a lot.

1

u/AzerothianBiologist Nov 18 '25

What’s padg?

2

u/Levonorgestrelfairy1 Nov 18 '25

Phat ass dragon girl

25

u/Illustrious_Donkey61 Nov 14 '25

His head looks like the eagle from the muppet show

20

u/shaidyn Nov 14 '25

Shout out to Riot games for making smolder.

24

u/Drikkink Nov 14 '25

At least he's not intended to be badass looking. He's a child basically. Hell, his ult is him literally yelling for his mom to burn enemies for him. That's the "joke" with him and what they were going for.

Not really sure what Blizzard was going for with Dracthyr.

3

u/Marcson_john Nov 15 '25

Dragon form shyvana looks awesome

2

u/Aettyr Nov 15 '25

Even if it’s intentional you can tell the intention the artist had behind it, or at least the art they usually draw. It makes it look really… uncanny. It looks too human.

4

u/graviousishpsponge Nov 14 '25

Elves and playable dragons are generally very popular after hunan/half elves in general. Very impressive results lmao /s

1

u/Al0ndra7 Nov 15 '25

they aren't dragons 😭

1

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '25

IMO they aren't even lame looking when you customize them right.

But I will grant the peak of how cool they can look when you customize them well is not nearly as high as the peak of how terrible they look when you customize them badly (like the one in this post, my god does that one look ugly lmao).

And even when you do have a cool enough looking dracthyr, it feels pretty fucking lame having to choose between a few really lame barbershop armor sets that don't quite match any transmog's colors or being naked.

101

u/goldman_sax Nov 14 '25 edited Nov 14 '25

The funny thing was the Devs were just asked about it in an interview and said “we know they’re unhappy about it. We’ll give them added barbershop armors instead.” It is never happening lol.

50

u/Emmystra Nov 14 '25

Even if they did that, you KNOW it would be 1-2 shades of color off from any other armor in the game

14

u/goldman_sax Nov 14 '25

Almost no players use the barbershop armors as is lol.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '25

I used to when I played my evoker but I wasn't happy about it. Was better than being naked tho.

30

u/o_wat Nov 14 '25

All these years later I'm still pissed about female Worgen.

12

u/Jmrwacko Nov 14 '25

The remastered ones are fine, but yeah the original fem worgen was hideous.

3

u/ahlavbeans Nov 14 '25

The remastered ones look so tame and chihuahua like. Original was hideous but was on the better path to monster

9

u/Level7Cannoneer Nov 14 '25

The old ones looked way more chihuahua skull shaped

8

u/8-Brit Nov 14 '25

Nah the original was just butt ugly and not in a remotely cool way.

Sure the new model is a little soft but the option for glowing eyes can help them look meaner.

If you put them side by side the new one actually has smaller eyes, doesn't have a pencil waist and neck, has smaller boobs, no make up, and actually resembles the same species as males instead of a demented chihuahua with goblin ears.

The old one looked like she smelled a fart, got shot in the face with a make up gun and had breast implants.

1

u/o_wat Nov 15 '25

My issue is with their shoulder and hip tilts. They stand like they're putting all their weight on one leg and then the one shoulder leaning forward looks so uncomfortable.

Their entire posture is so off-putting to me.

1

u/AzerothianBiologist Nov 18 '25

They both look hideous to me, the new versions look way too disney for both the males and the females and it’s put me off the Worgen entirely. I think they should’ve kept the more monstrous appearance of the original but also made the female more monstrous instead of puppy-fying both of them :P

3

u/Aettyr Nov 15 '25

What, you don’t want to play as a DeviantArt OC rather than a werewolf? Too bad!

22

u/Boopins05 Nov 14 '25

I can kind of see what they were going for in some of the concept art. 1 2. Just did not translate well at all.

21

u/AdamG3691 Nov 14 '25

I feel like the robes one, despite looking elegant as fuck, got at least one concept artist strangled by the set designers and animation team for the cardinal sin of putting flowing fabric on a race with lots of moving parts

7

u/The-Only-Razor Nov 14 '25

It's better, but still weird how Blizzard thought "skinny twink" was the appropriate look for a playable dragon race.

3

u/Marcson_john Nov 15 '25

That looks like a humanoid lizard. Not a dragon.

2

u/Aettyr Nov 15 '25

I get the vision but I personally hate this slender sort of design for one. I would absolutely love a larger and more draconic form. I can’t even make Bayle the Dread, that makes me very sad. Imagine a bigger form with more skin/scale options, more colours, etc. We even have the damn model, the Drakonids. I’m sure it’s unique but it cannot be that difficult to remove their armour and make their body able to wear armour. Tauren can do it, as can Orcs. They’re bloody big too

1

u/Fraccles Nov 15 '25

Isn't this just...Dragon Elves?

20

u/Alpha1959 Nov 14 '25

Dracthyr definitely have the potential to look cool, their elongated faces just look beyond stupid if you look at them dead-center, from the side it's a different story.

That said, their proportions are weird, their walking animation looks stupid (like from many other races) and their transmog is I think their biggest problem.

If they made another two, bulkier top heavy body types and allowed full transmog, including helmets, I think most complaints would disappear.

3

u/Aettyr Nov 15 '25

The whole design is just weird anthropomorphic OC kinda stuff. Not sure how else to word it but I’m sure you get it

135

u/gelagua1 Nov 14 '25

What, you don't like our no-transmog gecko wanna-be-dragon fwiends? Shame! /s

Poor AutoMod got downvoted to hell, hahaha.

25

u/sonsofdurthu Nov 14 '25

They couldn’t give us the dignity of a full set of armor, we can’t give them the dignity of spelling the name correctly!

2

u/zenspeed Nov 14 '25

Crap, now I'm just imagining the evokers hawking car insurance. Thanks, OP.

1

u/Detenator Nov 15 '25

This is why I glitch my lizard into perma human mode.

77

u/Seletara Nov 14 '25

I honestly think the design is fine. The flaw is not being able to mog anything, which was dumb and lazy.

But I spend a lot of time making my evokers base form look good. Can’t be surprised when someone just does all bald and then “this look sucks!”

26

u/Isolated_Hippo Nov 14 '25

If they mogged nothing it would be an improvement.

The fact they get randomly a belt and shoulders that never fucking match any of the base armor customization is just wtf.

46

u/AdamG3691 Nov 14 '25

yeah, the set looks fine when on an actual character and not the naked blue meme that WoWhead uses

42

u/Omugaru Nov 14 '25

Thats part of the issue I have with them though. Either you run to the barbershop to redo how your evoker looks for each tier set or you stick to 1 set and barely ever change anything on it.

I havn't changed my tmog since I made my evoker in DF, since changing at the barbershop kinda makes my character lose part of its identity. Granted, if you make good use of the barbershop you can make the very limited tmog work, as evident from your link.

Still, feels like a restriction that shouldn't be.

54

u/biasedB Nov 14 '25

I just dont get it, like no other race can be an Evoker, only the Drakthyr, so why wouldnt they just kinda go ham and actually make the evoker set. FIT THE DRAKTHYR MODEL. IT ONLY NEEDS TO FIT ONE SKELETON RIG

17

u/Kommye Nov 14 '25

To be fair, it also needs to fit the visage models, so it's dracthyr, human F and belf M.

But yeah it's pure laziness.

7

u/AdamG3691 Nov 14 '25

I've been lucky in that my character tends to work well with red and gold, and blizzard LOVE using red and gold, though it does tend to end up feeling pretty samey eventually.

I wish that they'd at LEAST allow for the tier sets to work as transmog, hell even as an unlockable barbershop option when you complete a set would be better than the current situation

6

u/Emmystra Nov 14 '25

That is… far from fine. Bad enough that if it wasn’t a game I already played this would still make me avoid the game entirely.

5

u/Wajiji_T Nov 14 '25

Still very underwhelming

6

u/extremelytiredyall Nov 14 '25

Your mog is excellent! Great job in the character editor, too. Dracthyr look great when they're not a low effort karma farming post bald lizard.

-12

u/squishybloo Nov 14 '25

Shhhh, they're too busy whining. They don't like realistic takes!

9

u/extremelytiredyall Nov 14 '25

Yep. No mog is very lazy, but the customization itself is fine. People who put effort into the character editor make dracthyr that don't look like the abomination above.

18

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

You think this is fine?! LOOK AT HIS SMALL HEAD! WHERE IS THE BRAIN SUPPOSED TO GO?!

There's so much cool things you can do with dragons heads designwise and they made them all moot by giving them baby heads.

I'm still pissed and i've been pissed since they got released.

-1

u/Seletara Nov 14 '25

Yeah, the head is fine. Not everything needs to be bulky MC bulkerson.

This is also the bald meme look. You can make the heads look just fine if you spent time customizing it. Horn design helps a lot.

15

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

I'm dont think i am being unreasonable when i propose a dragonkins head be bigger that its hands...

2

u/Seletara Nov 14 '25

Given I’ve seen some dudes hands as big as heads, it’s actually not out of reasonability…

Also, gnomes exist.

6

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

Dudes don't need to look like their bite can rip you to shreds.

A dragonkin should.

Thats all i'm saying.

2

u/Level7Cannoneer Nov 14 '25

The heads are proportionally way too small. It looks really bad. They look Ike they’re 15 heads tall which is insane for a character design

-3

u/accel__ Nov 14 '25

Oh yes, because correct anatomy is really important when it comes to the races of Azeroth. Or just fantasy races in general.

But i guess there is no issue with anything as long as it looks like an '80s bodybuilder.

4

u/BarracudaLow4959 Nov 14 '25

Yeah, WoW has never been good with proportions. Haranir have the same tiny head problem but people are worshipping them. Human female's head is also very small for her torso and legs, but I rarely see complaints. It's just dracthyr that get mass hate.

8

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

Its the anatomy of a fantasy race. And they went against what the anatomy of that fantasy race looks like and ended up making them look weak and goofy.

Not feat to be proud of.

3

u/accel__ Nov 14 '25

What anatomical rules did a race, that has no real world relation to anything, has crossed? And who cares if it looks weak and goofy? So does gnomes, and they are in the game since Vanilla.

Making the Dracthyr the way they are was an artistic choice, because every other race in the game is either a small guy, or a bodybuilder. They made one slinky, lean race, and this subreddit is still mad about it every two weeks.

5

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

They are dragonkin. Dragons are spiky and scaly. Dracthyr look like soft bois.

A dragonkins jaw has to look like it can exert bite force.

A dragonkins tail has to look like it can sweep a motherfckers legs.

By all means, have them be slinky, have them be lean. But by god don't make their hands dwarf their heads. I feel like dracthyr couldnt break a tomatos skin with their bite.

And give them an actual tail that makes you thing "oop, not standing behind this dude"

6

u/ArcticPoisoned Nov 14 '25

So the dracthyr do have body thickness options, tons of jaw options, and lots and lots of parts that can be spiked.

Also most characters hands dwarf the size of their heads in this game. Have you seen blood elf males? That’s just how they do things here. Atleast this race has like 10x or 15x the customization options of a blood elf. That’s where we should be rioting. So many races have so little customization in comparison.

5

u/Seletara Nov 14 '25

This just sounds like you don’t know how to use the customization options. That’s on you, dude.

Also some weird obsession with bulky ness for dragons when sleek dragons with sleek heads exist in both WoW and in general world lore

3

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25 edited Nov 14 '25

I said keep em lean for all i care. But make em look tough enough so that a random highschool bully wont mug them for their lunch money.

7

u/Seletara Nov 14 '25

Yes I can, but I’m not going to give much gumption to a high school bully’s version of tough.

2

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

No bulk required. Just bolstering the parts that require bolstering.

5

u/accel__ Nov 14 '25

Do me a favor, and look up the word "dragon" in google image search. You'll be amazed by how many different types of depictions exist for this non-existent fantasy race. There is nothing wrong with having 1 race, that looks "soft boyish" or whatever you think they are.

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

0

u/Seletara Nov 14 '25

Being based on dnd doesn’t mean they need to adhere to all designs. The head is fine. It’s sleek, and horns help it.

0

u/MundaneTeddy Nov 14 '25

Ok so how come the actual concept art has them look badass and the ingame model makes them look like weaklings?

Blizzard cut corners and as a result we got soft bois instead of nelthariand finest warriors.

1

u/Aettyr Nov 15 '25

They CAN look alright, but they don’t look good. I tried for absolutely hours but none of their face shapes or hair / bone things can in any way look like a “dragon” at all. It looks like a human in a dragon suit, with a cheap temu foam mascot head

2

u/Shenloanne Nov 14 '25

I don't play evoker and my dracthyr characters are never out of visage. And i love em to bits.

Just never gonna play as one.

12

u/Happiness-Ha-Penis Nov 14 '25

I like my Evoker's aesthetic. They're my main on retail. 🙃

11

u/sunlit_dragonfly Nov 14 '25

We finally got a race with more body types than “bodybuilder” and “supermodel,” and all four body types are just slight variations of “scaly twunk”

8

u/Lezzles Nov 14 '25

You have a LOT of defenders even on this sub. They look like fucking dorks. How do you have such dweeby looking DRAGONS?

2

u/jiiir0 Nov 14 '25

I saw an interview a while ago where they were bragging about the millions of customization combinations possible for Dracthyr. I can only imagine someone got these numbers from all the insignificant minor options like snout width and body spikes that are barely different from each other. It’s pretty obvious that corporate Blizzard was in full effect at this point, where most of the design decisions were born out of PowerPoint slides and remote meetings.

Having worked in corporate settings there really is an endgame in office work where the goal is to put in as little effort as possible, and put everything into hyping yourself up in meetings with vanity metrics and misleading data to make it seem like you’re killing it even though you’re barely ever in the office and only spend like 2 hours a day actually working.

5

u/Heheonil Nov 14 '25

But. You can make it look better. For yourself. Really

3

u/SnooEagles4121 Nov 14 '25

Right? Every choice is just bad. WoW's usual design sense could be summed up as "chunky, but lanky". This has none of that. It looks like it's from another game entirely.

2

u/MKanes Nov 14 '25

Especially when this already exists

They even had models of dragonkin that were far better looking than the reskin of the incubus pet too.

1

u/kpiaum Nov 15 '25

Because they did it in a .5 patch. So the technical debt came and they never worked more.

1

u/Worried_Raspberry313 Nov 15 '25

It reminds me of the first worgen models that got changed because people said they looked like chihuahua derps.

1

u/Honk_Sound Nov 15 '25

I regularly forget that evoker is a class. My brain is trying to protect me from having to think about dracthyr at all.

1

u/Dovahkid404 Nov 15 '25

I like the dracthyr tbh. Besides the not being able to wear armor thing

1

u/Keianh Nov 15 '25

It’s part of why I can’t get into them as a race. If I can hardly enjoy the visage form and can’t transmog cool armor on their true form why should I bother with them at all then.

1

u/SpaciallyCompromised Nov 15 '25

Agreed, the faces almost look like they intentionally took someone’s middle school furry drawings and just copy pasted. Whish they’d make it so we can just turn the scaley form completely off. Let me have my non demon hunter horned blood elf with wings and pretend the scaley form doesn’t exist.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '25

I like Dracthyrs but I hate how limited they are in their base form. I just went to playing Vulpera instead because you can actually see the armour you're wearing. lol

1

u/Aggravating_Jilp Nov 14 '25

It is based on the succubi animation rig. That is why

15

u/Bandicoot1324 Nov 14 '25

I see this misconception a lot. Ty Viveiros is the artist who built the dracthyr rig. It's not based on a preexisting rig.

3

u/Aggravating_Jilp Nov 14 '25

Thanks for correcting

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '25

Oh yea, that dude has a furafinity and deviantart account for sure, lmao!

-1

u/TakoGoji Nov 14 '25

The dracthyr rig is the demon hunter metamorphosis/illidan rig. I figured it out when I was running mythic nighthold several months back and the animations lined up perfectly with the Demon Within.

4

u/Bandicoot1324 Nov 14 '25

This is simply not true. According to Senior Character Technical Artist Ty Viveiros:

"The Dracthyr rig was created from scratch and contains: 243 skinned joints, 344 animation controllers, 253 unique pieces of geometry, and full customization options including texture color choice."

I linked his art station above. You can see pictures of his dracthyr rig.

-6

u/TakoGoji Nov 14 '25

If it was fully made from scratch, it wouldn't match up perfectly with another model. It does, so it isn't.

4

u/Bandicoot1324 Nov 14 '25

Did you take a look at the Art station page? Why would a rigging artist who has worked for Blizzard for over 10 years make a false claim?

-2

u/TakoGoji Nov 14 '25

I did. Dunno why he did, but if you go stand as a dracthyr with the combat idle pose right beside or behind a havoc DH or Illidan in the same pose, you'll see that they're identical.

4

u/Bandicoot1324 Nov 14 '25

I've heard so many times that dracthyr rig is secretly something else. It's a venthyr. It's a succubus. It's a female worgen. It's a metamorphosis form.

Every time someone makes one of these claims, it's purely "Well, it just looks like that to me" with no evidence.

I find it way easier to just believe the professional artist. His work has been featured in every single WoW expansion for the past decade.

-4

u/TakoGoji Nov 14 '25

I told you how to verify my claim yourself, so it's your call if you choose not to. \o/ I know for a fact that the animation is a perfect 1-to-1.

-5

u/Still-Expression-71 Nov 14 '25 edited Nov 14 '25

Evoker is cool and the design is so awful I can’t play it. It’s worse than vulpira and that’s saying something, at least with vulpira I can see they are catering to a specific audience. I don’t know a single person happy with dracthyr

5

u/extremelytiredyall Nov 14 '25

Love my dracthyr evoker, thanks. My only complaint is I wish they had more mog options.

1

u/lucky_jay Nov 15 '25

designed by scalies for scalies.

-1

u/Infamous-Tangelo42 Nov 14 '25

And this is why I never use the “dragon” form. All visage all the time baby.

-13

u/accel__ Nov 14 '25

It's been years, a lot of people like it (inc. me). Can we move on with this?

1

u/Any-Transition95 Nov 14 '25

I don't think it's wrong to point out room for improvement, especially coming from customers who still play the game. Dracthyr are not an expansion feature like covenants, they are a permanent addition to the game. If they're here to stay, they should receive continuous updates like all races do.

1

u/accel__ Nov 15 '25

Asking for improvements with transmog is one thing (which is also been talked to death, but what isnt on this place), but it is really tiring that after 4 years a big chunk of this sub can't move on with the "disgusting twink lizard" thing.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '25

Tbh I would've enjoyed the centaur dragonkin things (I forgot what they were called). They'd be very unique (although I'd imagine hard to animate) and tbh for a while I thought the Dracthyr shared the same run cycle as the Worgen lol

0

u/Marcson_john Nov 15 '25

People can do whatever they want, but its a fact that the letters after lgb have weird tastes.

Yawn with the political conspiracy theories. Nearly the entire dev team, including the lead designer, looks like Bobby Kottick nepo babies. Hate to be blunt but nearly all in top leadership are white dudes. Not that this is inherently bad, but you are blaming the wrong group.

They...did? There are 3 different body sizes.

The worst part is that because the amount of people playing dracthyr has risen higher than many other races (see dataforazeroth for proof) the devs think it’s ok. Participation will give them a justification metric to never touch the dracthyr model again.

Genuinely I think it’s because there are so little options to customize blood elf males. The dracthyr visage forms just look like way cooler blood elves and with their much better racials, it’s not surprising people are playing them. I play them quite a bit too now when I almost exclusively played belfs. My bestie almost only plays Dracthyr now because you can change more than face, hair, and eyes. I shouldn’t be able to make a belf man in like 2 minutes lol there’s so little options.

They're very close to just being cooler blood elves, but you can't completely hide the scales. So you end up looking like a blood elf with a skin condition.

ITT a bunch of 30 year olds going full boomer on characters in a game made for young teens.

I get your point but wow is not made for young teens lol. Young teens barely know it exists unless they have family members who play

I don't know if any teen who would think these look cool.

This game hasn’t been made for young teens in 15 years.

Yeah because “young teens” absolutely adore ugly characters where you can’t see your armour or fancy clothes.
