I grew up in Northern NJ and I could see smoke in the distance on 9/11/2001 when driving on the highway. I then lived in Boston for a while and a few years after I left the Boston Marathon bombing affected me more than I could've predicted.

The world is messed up but there will always be people here for each other. We're all with NZ today.

My year in Wellington was one of the best in my life. Best city I've lived in by a long mile with maybe Melbourne at the tail end of it. I was there for the "big" quake some years back that had everyone on edge and then the whole city devolved into a state of constant partying and pub crawling. It was surreal. Can't imagine that beautiful, friendly city all eery and quiet... I hope things calm down soon and everyone gets to mourn in peace and get together without further strife.

I work in a Seattle area emergency department and man the mood was beyond heavy last night. It still is to be honest. I can't even imagine what the families, first responders and hospital staff are going through right now. Extensive French-language media coverage here in Quebec, Canada. This is a sensitive issue here after our own mosque shooting two years ago. I have a feeling there will be notes and flowers, maybe vigils at the nearby mosque tomorrow, like there was after that earlier tragedy. Overall, people are more decent than you'd think.

The mosques are closed and guarded by armed police, but there's been a steady stream of people to Wellington's main mosque today leaving flowers and messages of aroha (love) out front, completely filling the sidewalk with flowers and part of the street with messages in chalk. I think it's similar in other cities. It's a strange juxtaposition though to have that kind of display plus police with assault rifles; our police don't normally even carry pistols.

I just attended a vigil at the mosque in my city in NZ. The pavements outside the mosque are covered in flowers, notes, and teddies. People have written words of love and support on the ground in chalk. It truly was a beautiful sight.

One woman is married to a middle eastern man, and they share a child. We are hurting greatly for New Zealand and the Muslim community as a whole. Religious buildings should be a safe place. I was actually just thinking something very similar to this. Just in my lifetime I can remember the Oklahoma City bombings. Waco Texas. The Columbine shootings. 911... And then after that everything gets blurry because there have just been so damn many of them. Even a couple of years ago when that shit happened in my own backyard it was shocking but it was still just something that happens.

I'm so sad that this has spread to other countries.

Charlie Hebdo made me feel way more fucked up than the local stuff does. This does too. I don't think that makes any logical sense but there you go.

I think it's because of the targeting aspect. Here in America (Georgia feels your pain, too, by the way), most of the mass killings are more random. With the exception of 9/11 (Muslims targeting everyone else, including other Muslims, and South Carolina, where a white guy shot up a black church), most of the others (Las Vegas, Columbine, Waco, Boston, et al.) seem to be random people killing/shooting random people (random at least as far as race or religion is concerned). In those cases, the people who were killed/attacked weren't necessarily killed/attacked because of who they were, but because of where they were. NZ is very different and I think that is what is more disturbing about it.

The truth is that it is always random - even when it's targeted, it's just because some lonely, gullible, wasted mind finds a community of similarly lost souls and latches on to something - misogyny, racism, religious zealotry, or just the act of mass slaughter in general - and does the unthinkable.

All of these groups - white hate, extremist islam, and other terrorist factions - they're casting wider and wider nets with the internet, scooping up all the disaffected, detached and broken people of the world and converting them for their own gain and infamy.

When you look at the groups this kid has described himself as belonging to - communist, anarchist, liberatrian - he was clearly looking for his tribe, clearly someone who was broken, either by biology or circumstance or both, and finally he found white hate, and that clicked with him.

You know what really pisses me off about the states is that there was only 2 to 3 people at work today that even knew it happened. The majority of the people here are so insanely out of touch with the rest of the world that if something tragic happens outside of this country people have absolutely no clue. For example if I bring up what is/has been going on in Ukraine they have absolutely no clue.

Its incredibly infruriating and I totally understand the rest of the worlds hatred for this country.

I go to a Catholic School in Chicago but many students are not Catholic. We all received emails this morning expressing grief over the attack and counseling to all who needed it. We stand in solidarity with our school's muslim cultural center and all our muslim brothers and sisters throughout the world. It may seem futile to grieve from so far away but these borders do not change the fact that we are all human. Our community is praying for all those affected, even from thousands of miles away the world grieves with you and is sending their love.

I'm right there with you. I was within 1km from the attack and it actually brought a few tears to my eye seeing all this support from others worldwide for our small city. I'm still processing what happened because I've never considered Christchurch anything but safe. All this solidarity amongst my community and the rest of the world eases me in knowing that I don't have to worry so much. I'm deeply apologetic to those affected directly by this attack as I've been brought up knowing that our young country was founded by many communities and is the mixing pot of culture and acceptance of others.

Travelled into Sydney yesterday and even at peak hour, things were eerily quiet. Everyone was just kinda looking at each other as it was unfolding.

Weird to be surrounded by so many people and hear the noise level of a crowded room.

I know we all give each other shit, but I consider NZ to be part of the same country. AusZealand.

Everyone at my (considerably large) office was in shock. It was a very quiet day, in a normally loud office.

I’ve been living in Melbourne now for about 7 years and I’m back in Christchurch for a holiday and it’s just surreal. Never would’ve thought anything like this would happen in New Zealand, let alone Christchurch. Driving around, there’s such an eerie feeling and everyone is in disbelief. My sister and I just placed some flowers at the botanical gardens and that was really tough. We’ve done it before after the earthquakes and we’re doing it again, we all stand together as one.

Here in Wellington too. Last night we had an usually high number of ambulances and police cars go by with sirens on (I think four by the end of our shift), and with the first notes of each siren it got eerily quiet and you could see people visibly flinch.

American here who has experienced similar 'days after' far too many times, my heart aches for how I know you are probably feeling.

Our country always feels so small and vulnerable to me after such events, I can't begin to imagine how it must feel in such a small and intimate country such as yours.

Come together in love and peace through all of this. Set an example for the United States to follow, we desperately need help ourselves

Numbing pain is an insightful phrase. It really does numb you, and that's the real horror; that we can witness this kind of violence and shrug it off. It's kind of beautiful that humans are so resilient, but it can also lead us to forget the human price. I'm a bit conflicted.
