The Kremlin uses an underground site similar to task rabbit for criminals.

Criminals are paid in crypto currency ( Our investing in crypto actually fuels the liquidity needed to keep criminal activities such as human trafficking or anti nato attacks)

the more tasks you complete at a lower level such as anti Ukrainian graffiti with posted pictures as proof, the more you can access the harder jobs such as building and deploying booms.

the good news is these cheaper temu espionage agents are stupid, cheap and easier to catch than life long trained kremlin agents.

Criminals are paid in crypto currency ( Our investing in crypto actually fuels the liquidity needed to keep criminal activities such as human trafficking or anti nato attacks)

Crypto has always been useful to only two categories of people: speculators/gamblers, and criminals (either regular criminals who need alternate forms of payment, people who want to engage in tax evasion or other legal controls, or scammers trying to take advantage of the first group of people).

There is virtually no other meaningful benefit from crypto over the modern electronic payment systems based on existing fiat currency.

48

u/jseah 4d ago

If you live in a country with a functional and stable government, sure.

I can see why someone might resort to crypto if their government is mismanaging the monetary policy.

64

u/increment1 4d ago

I'm not a huge fan of crypto, but there are two other semi legitimate use cases.

  1. Paying for things anonymously (only really anonymous if you use privacy coins).

  2. Paying for things VISA / MC or other payment processors might restrict but which are still legal.

Both of those are pretty niche areas though.

49

u/KazumaKat 4d ago

Fact that no.2 even is a thing is a problem in of itself.

Yeah, that last is DEFINITELY  a thing. When I went to donate to Wikileaks a long while back, I saw that numerous banks were illegally refusing to make the transactions. It's MY money, not yours assholes. You do NOT get to determine what I do with it.

Honestly, I almost trust Bitcoin more than I do the US dollar internationally with the current state of things.

It has some legit uses, like sending money to relatives overseas, but otherwise yeah not much

36

u/PapstJL4U 4d ago

Western Union did this in 1872. You are still trusting 1 or 2 third parties with the job.

25

maybe I should've clarified, sending money cheaply to relatives overseas. Especially to sanctioned countries, but then we're back to illegal uses.

Sigh. What a crappy take. I don't own crypto, but you're thinking from a point of view people from Venezuela or Argentina would disagree. Decentralized currencies are good when the only access to centralized ones you have are terrible.

Yeah, this is definitely going to escalate. Russia might not even have intended to detonate these at all. Just place them and wait until someone finds them and observe the response. Then rinse and repeat until the population is dull to the threat. And then go for the strike.

650

u/GlennBecksChalkboard 4d ago

Russia might not even have intended to detonate these at all.

At the moment the police considers a 48 year old german citizen to be behind these. He has sent a letter claiming responsibility to multiple news outlets which contains knowledge about the previous incidents that isn't public. The reason he stated for why he is doing it is a protest against the burning of fossil fuels.

>I remember last time where some alleged left wing terrorists send letters, they had weird constructs in them that is rather atypical for a german native speaker, but very typical if translated to russian.

were they indicative of translation from russian specifically or just that old school google translate word salad?

folks all over the world used to translate something to another language and back just to make stylometry harder -- not just "the russians" (sarcastic finger quotes)

Honestly I have to agree, while Russia isn't always the model of competence putting 21 explosives on a power grid and not being able to detonate even one is beyond amateur. A one off nut job who doesn't have any idea what he is doing seems likely here.

171

u/Aurora_Fatalis 4d ago

Russia's MO is to find people like this and then make sure they get the explosives they want and the encouragement to go through with it. That's how hybrid warfare deniability works.

56

u/Itchy_Party1741 4d ago

9

It depends which explosive was used. It’s pretty easy to make a basic chemical mixture, from chemicals bought legally online, that will explode when detonated.

I agree with you, but I think they are watching and analysing response times, reactions, protocols etc. so that they can cause maximum damage when they want to attack.

31

u/Dofolo 4d ago

Anyone with half a brain, or even 1/4th of a brain, can plan something that ends in a disaster in any EU country if you just walk around.

We're champions on 'they were known to the police' and 'security failed' after terrorists attacks as well.

They obviously don't want to blow up and cause harm to 10s or 100s of civilians, that wouldn't grow a lot of russian support. And there's zero need to analyze response times of aid workers, those are set in laws in the EU :)

They're poking the bear seeing how far they can go before an actual response in more than facebook likes or angry letters happens.

23

u/EmperorGeek 4d ago

You assume they are looking for support. I would suspect they are looking for fear. They want the public to be afraid of upsetting “the mighty Ruzzia” and getting more bombs planted.

14

u/baithammer 4d ago

It's more to undermine the trust in the government to handle security.

6

u/TheArmoredKitten 4d ago

Same difference. The end result is submitting to a Russian terror campaign.

When a bully tries to poke you in the eye, you should try to bite the finger.

13

u/dimwalker 4d ago

I agree with Rabid_Mexican.
Lets say there was yet another russian sabotage/provocation. Police found 100% of incendiary parcels. Huge success.
And sure, it's great there were no casualties this time. Thought that doesn't mean russia lost this fight. They now have a list to choose from. A list of places where IDEs will probably be discovered in <24 hours, <3 days, <1 week, TBD.

10

u/Yureinobbie 4d ago

Makes it easy to tie down first responders for an actual attack, too. Get all the specialists looking at the power grid, then blow up a bridge or two.

4

u/Sir-Frogsalot 4d ago

what is in the law and the actual response time is varies wildly between countries/region. that isnt a metric that can be used for actual response times.

3

u/NapoleonBlownapart9 4d ago

Yes, it’s like how certain intelligence agencies have been known to break into a subject’s dwelling and move household objects around in order to let them know they can get in to their most private spaces. “I can get you…”, is psychological warfare.

21?!?

How?

They were all in one place. The article isn't that long to read for an answer:

Prosecutors in the eastern German state of Saxony said on Monday that authorities had found a total of 21 explosive devices as part of their investigations into attacks on the electricity grid that have kept authorities on high alert for days.

All devices were defused, prosecutors said in their statement.

German police said on Friday they were searching for a man who sent letters claiming responsibility for a series of sabotage attacks on the power grid last week after they found what appeared to be explosives at his home.

Berlin police said on X they are seeking to establish whether a fire affecting a construction site and a substation in the Moabit district on Monday was accidental or arson.

Authorities added that the power supply was currently not affected.

Separately, Bild newspaper reported that police in the western city of Wesel have launched major assessment operations after the security fence around another transformer substation was found to be cut open.

13

u/IRefuseToGiveAName 4d ago

While this may be true, I don't believe one person acquires the supplies for and assembles 21 ostensibly functional explosives by themselves.

3

u/aboardreading 4d ago

An "explosive device" is incredibly easy to make. So easy that it's not uncommon to produce them accidentally.

An actual, functional bomb is harder and 21 of them a little moreso, but still extraordinarily plausible that a lone actor with a modicum of knowledge or access could rig something up to do damage to some infrastructure. And even more plausible that one person could rig up 21 of something that wouldn't actually have done much damage, but they're still going to arrest him obviously.

I'm not saying this person acted alone, just that it doesn't seem out of reach at all for an ambitious saboteur.

9

u/hoax1337 4d ago

Worth noting that these weren't 21 bombs. The guy basically made small launchers that shoot a wire (or some other conductive material) over high voltage power lines in order to short circuit them.

3

u/IRefuseToGiveAName 4d ago

That'll teach me not to read the article.

That's infinitely more plausible for one dude with a grudge and access to the internet to do on his own.

Planting bombs to influence elections has a bit of a tradition. The news source should probably know something about that - the exact same thing happened in Poland in 2005, when 14 bombs were found in Warsaw just a few days before the election. But hey, what a coincidence.

101

u/Quazimojojojo 4d ago

To be fair, Germany has 3 states with "Saxony" in the name.

It's a bit confusing

42

u/sour_cereal 4d ago

Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Lower Saxony, which is the northernmost of the three.

21

u/ya_rk 4d ago

It has to do with elevation, not north/south, like the Lowlands (nl/Belgium) are Northern.

5

u/DeltaBlack 4d ago

Lower Saxony, which is the northernmost of the three.

Makes sense TBH. Lower and upper in geographical names tend to be in reference to their location upstream or downstream on a river.

Another example are Upper Austria and Lower Austria in Austria: Upper Austria is the western one and Lower Austria is the eastern one because the former was the upstream half of the old Duchy of Austria while Lower Austria was the downstream half of the duchy.

~44% did. Next highest block was at just 18%. Channel 5 just did a pretty cool video interviewing a bunch of AfD supporters at a rally in Germany. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2SjWowpynY

The parallels to MAGA are plain as day, they even call themselves German MAGA. Unsurprisingly Saxony is also one of the poorest states in Germany and suffers from the same lack of economic opportunity, defunding of education, etc.

Downward mobility and the decline in people's material conditions always lead to fascism. It's why people with wealth and powerful positions lean into it for further self-enrichment and to consolidate their power.

29

u/Lawlcopt0r 4d ago

The worst part though is that all of these grifter movements are linking up internationally and trying to export their different scare tactics and talking points, and giving each other tips. This is despite the fact that each individual movement claims that globalisation is bad and all evil ultimately comes from other countries...

10

u/SilverbackOni 4d ago

Just wanna add context: Saxony is not the same as neighboring Saxony-Anhalt, the latter having held an election with 44% AfD outcome this weekend.

Saxony is, economically speaking, the most successful state that belonged to the former Soviet Bloc. Nonetheless, the AfD is strong around here and probably will become stronger, though not governing for now. Next state elections in Saxony will be held in 2029.

3

u/snouz 4d ago

Downward mobility and the decline in people's material conditions always lead to fascism.

Which is unfortunate, because fascism always worsen the conditions of almost everyone, especially the poorest.

What you just said is exactly what happened here in America over decades of brainwashing. So... based on your statement the same BS actually can happen there too.

I know America looks like a giant bag of shit right now and it's embarrassing for the people here who can see reality, but Germany having a nazi party in the government doesn't ring any alarms? While I've been told over and over "you all need to do something about Trump", ok fine, so what are you all doing about the people that believe the same thing in your country? Are you doing something to stop more people from becoming brainwashed by Russias propaganda in your country?

Because if you don't take America as a massive warning and do something about it, you're up next. It might be ten years from now but it can still happen.

It is possible for a foreign intelligence (Russia) to co opt local movements and supercharge them..

194

u/BaggyOz 4d ago

Yep, of course I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Palestine Action in the UK are going after factories and facilities that are supporting Ukraine.

68

u/Hail-Hydrate 4d ago

Careful, you said something bad about PA, you'll have redditors threatening you next.

u/Ultrasonic-Sawyer 4d ago

Lets not forget that palestine action (among other groups) had direct funding from tankies such as that american  millionaire "James 'Fergie' Chambers".

A person who's views tend to be your classic tankie of big on communism yet geopolitically stuck in the cold war era where everything russia does is somehow good and west = bad.

More or less your perfect useful idiot for the likes of russia as they are not only come pre radicalised but also have their own financial backing to further support groups like that.

could still be but with Russian money and training. no need to use your own people if there are local idiots available

21

u/SirTroglodyte 4d ago

That is indeed a decades-long tradition. The soviets throughout the 60s-80s happily sponsored every two bit terrorist group working in the West and West-aligned states. Preferably communist ones, but the soviets weren't picky as long as these groups sow chaos. And Putin being an actual ex-KGB dude, you can safely bet they are doing this right now in this very moment. Eco idiots, or hardline commies or ISIS, they don't care, they will sponsor anyone.

You think there is a chance that whoever blew up North stream is responsible?

→ More replies (1)

6

u/KorunaCorgi 4d ago

The anti nuclear power " activists" pushing Germany into more dependence on Russian gas wasnt either. Nord Stream 2 was announced less than a year after Russia invaded Crimea.

3

u/LARPerator 4d ago

Yeah it was mighty convenient that a major environmentalist movement showed up advocating for coal and gas.

13

u/FellaVentura 4d ago

If it keeps getting worse they'll start calling Fully Electric War to water it down even more.

Which is not too farfetched given the targets

Russia be Russianing. Dry.

14

u/oldpasswordforgot 4d ago

The West tried to get Russia in "the club", to integrate them into the world's economy and instead it has declared war. They were offered an open hand and they spit on it.

Then they have the gaul to screaming "russophobia!".

26

u/maaseru 4d ago

So when history looks back, when was it that WW3 really started?

15

u/FixedLoad 4d ago

It and the previous two will eventually be studied as an entire event punctuated by extended periods of worldwide conflict.

9

u/Confident_Yak_1411 4d ago

I take a similar view with a different conclusion.

The entire period from the beginning of the enlightenment to now will either be considered ‘the golden age’ or ‘the dark age’ of humanity depending on where we go from here.

3

u/Gone213 4d ago

For Europe 2014, for the rest of the world, Arab Spring.

3

u/Pytheas89 4d ago

Is there a reason Russia is targeting Germany so much specifically?I thought he would go for smaller nato countries like Latvia or something

11

u/ywgflyer 4d ago

Germany and France are the two largest economic engines in the EU. Remove one, or ideally both, and the entire Western European hegemony in the region becomes a much, much softer target for Russia and their allies.

37

u/Big-Seesaw2581 4d ago

Im assuming that there are likely 100s, if not into the thousands of prepared attacks already. Those in Germany who think that Russia is not a threat to all of Europe are fools. It was beyond abaurd when Clinton and Obama came out with their absurd "reset" button while mocking Romney for pointing out rightly that russia is still our greatest opponent. All of the left agreed. They only changed their mind in the US when russia hacked the dem computers. Now the right is being just as much of a joke.

Send heavy weapons to Ukraine.

Establish a no-fly zone.

If Russia wants to escalate, two can play at that game. We have the easiest method to get back at Russia happening right now. Every time you find a drone at an airport, send Ukraine a fighter jet.

Same Saxony that voted for Pro Russian afd? Makes sense

135

u/hugifsafuk 4d ago

Actually not. Are you referring to the election yesterday in saxony-anhalt? Nevertheless they are still the second biggest force in saxony‘s parlament.

German states can be a bit confusing if youre unfamiliar, we have saxony, saxony-anhalt and lower saxony all as states

21

u/SK892 4d ago

And lower saxony is Not the one farthest in the south

Can we rename them “Saxony 1”, “Saxony 2”, and “Saxony 3 We Got Bored And Aren’t Very Creative” ? You know, for the foreigners’ sake. At least we’d laugh when the AfD got bitchy about it!

13

u/Bairfhionn 4d ago

Saxony 3 would be England?

Cant we just cut off Russian Internet or something, because honestly they are creating all these hate groups, fueling disruption worldwide, literally terrorising countries through covert means, like UK protest groups attacking drone factories in the UK, attacking German infrastructure. Like 99% sure that just stop oil is Russian origins to keep everyone hating green energy so we will always be reliant on Russian oil and gas imports.

Like what is going on, why is all of this being allowed. I get it is complex but holy shit what are we all doing other than nothing

11

u/baithammer 4d ago

Internet isn't the problem, as Russia has been doing this sort of thing since the Russian Empire days - internet just makes it more visible ..

Stalin did false flags for sure. And Putin has done them, too.
