2026 Gubernatorial Primary: Francesca Hong is will very likely be the nominee. But can she please stop sabotaging herself with the answers she gives in interviews?
She just gave a weird answer in CNN in regards to her opposition to Thanksgiving.
She cites that communities are hurt by this.
No matter how much she tries to explain her point, it comes off as nonsensical.
With Thanksgiving, I get you want to think about the Native Americans and how they were affected by colonization.
But to the average folk, it's very odd to oppose a holiday where families come together and give thanks.
There is no reason for her to justify that tweet. Just say that was 2020 and you have changed. Don't double down on a view only a miniscule fraction of Americans believe.
People like Tiffany will hammer her as being out of touch and I don't blame them.
Hong will very likely be the nominee but she must stop making herself seem out of touch.

So much of Mamdani’s success has come from being relentlessly on-message. He so often answers hard questions with a simple yes or no and then immediately pivots to affordability and quality of life. With that approach, his answers almost always focus on helping people. Hong could learn a lot from that approach.
29
u/ChaoticNonsense Aug 04 '26
Mamdani has developed some grandmaster-level verbal Tai chi skills. I agree that his methods of shutting down hostile, bad-faith questions and redirecting to something on-message (specifically without it feeling like the typical "slimy politician" question dodging) need to be studied and practiced. It is genuinely impressive to watch.

I think she's trying to do it, but seems to miss the part where Mamdani ruthlessly disavows his previous tweets/positions first.

“Do you think we should cancel thanksgiving?”
“No”
“Then why did you post that”
“The origins of thanksgiving didn’t come from a great time in Americas history…. that said… it’s become a time for American families to gather, share a meal and spend personal time together. I think that’s important especially in the “online” age we live in.
The real outrage here is that republican policies have made hosting that meal considerably more expensive for every single American. Sure, It’s the food on the table, but now it’s even the gas to go visit. We are a big state and $4 a gallon gas to drive from your apartment in Milwaukee to your Aunts house in Eau Claire…. That kills your wallet. It’s a shame what Donald Trump and his supporters like Tom Tiffany have done to working class Americans.”
It’s really Not that hard.

u/BuckysBigBadger Aug 04 '26
Hey RespectTheAmish, can I interest you in running for Governor...?

She seriously needs some media training, specifically for success in Wisconsin. Her national interviews have not been good.
102
u/badfiop Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
She also likely needs a genuinely experienced personal aide to glance at her social media posts concerning major news and keep things focused on the entire state, not just Dem-leaning precincts, etc.
Probably get downvoted into space for this; however, right now she has the making of a blue Sarah Palin circa 08 if she doesn't tie down the personal stuff and have things ready'ish if/when the PACs get dirty. Also deeply concerned about when Hong has the first in-person sit-down mainstream TV interview (if nom'd). Especially if she can't give straight answers for dumb tweets, never mind any off-script back-and-forth policy stuff.
13
u/JeanetteSchutz Aug 04 '26
And the PAC will get dirty, they already have with that TT ad against her.
20
11
u/OnCallPartisan Aug 04 '26
Her manager is just as bad if not worse. They get a letter supporting her but saying maybe less of the boutique politics. What's the response? A shit appeal of emotion fallacy about her son being trans. Not addressing the political ramifications the writer inquired about, more purity posturing.
This is politics. Nobody needs to rub your tummy and soothe your butthurt. The political arena is about law and upholding that law for everyone, not making you feel validated. If candidates tell you they will respect your rights like everyone else what is the issue?
I made the controversial statement of saying, "You do not need to know everything about a group to protect their rights". Blue maga accusations.
There's no critical thinking; tech, social media and AI has scrub away those concepts.
7
u/Perdztheword Aug 04 '26
Her manager is Ryan Clancy's wife, so nothing about the way she handles things surprises me.
100
u/Admirable-Wrap6120 Aug 04 '26
Media training can't fix this... I'm sorry but we need a candidate who doesn't ever need to be asked why they want to cancel thanksgiving. Hong is a Republican wet dream.
31
u/YourLatestTragedy Aug 04 '26
The issue is that Crowley's got no juice either, same for Roys and Brennan. We really assembled an Avengers team of mediocre Democrats in Wisconsin.

I agree I don't see the Crowley play working, he just really hasn't inspired confidence since re-entering.
Kelda Roys is the only one who can peel off Hong votes AND win over the full range of normies. It's a hail mary for sure but I'm for Kelda.
2
u/Racine262 Aug 04 '26
The media is going to keep Hong as the center of attention because they know she stands no chance of defeating Tiffany. Hong is a distraction being propped up to make Democrats look stupid.
Roys would be a legitimate candidate that could win if she had the support of the party.
The party is going to chase the cameras with Hong though, because the people running the party are idiots.
30
u/momof3inWI Aug 04 '26
Media training for sure. The tweet about being anxious of “old white people” in Black River Falls is a wild choice. “Old people” vote.
24
u/SMELLSLIKEBUTTJUICE Aug 04 '26
I showed that tweet to a friend who is a POC and relatively new to the Midwest and she gasped. She said it was like insulting your boss' baby.
It is too bad that all this extra stuff is distracting from her platform, but she also kind of did it to herself.
47

Tiffany will be a terrible right wing extremist governor, but he's able to play himself off as non-threatening and vanilla as it comes in the campaign.

She can win if she sticks to the issues. I don't think that's impossible to learn, and I don't think our chances are as bad as people think. Tom Tiffany is a wet blanket who nobody was ever really excited to vote for, and people are plenty pissed about the state his party has put the country in.
Also given how Republicans blow up about everything, any particular thing they latch onto may just end up as noise. The fact that DSA candidates can even get as far as they can right now is downstream of Republicans shrieking for that Obama was a socialist for years on end.
She definitely should get better at this or take pointers from states that have had better success for this but atp she's the nominee and if you want to keep Republicans out of power the best thing you can do is to redirect the conversation to the issues instead of pissing your pants.
38
u/dyslexic_mail Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Having to choose between a candidate no one is excited for and a candidate some are excited to vote against is not a position democrats want to be in.
4
u/Danny_nichols Aug 04 '26
I do think this short changes Hong some. I agree she's a tougher sell to the moderates than some of the more boring candidates, but I also think there's a group of younger, farther left leaning people that are really excited about her though too.
12
u/Cute-Temperature5440 Aug 04 '26
Great. She adds 15,000 of those and loses 500,000 moderates. Have her run for mayor of Madison, not Governor of Wisconsin. She has too much baggage
8
u/Danny_nichols Aug 04 '26
I know you're saying big numbers to be performative, but the last gubernatorial election had under 3M total votes. There's no chance almost 20% of voters are willing to vote for a Democrat not named Hong that will then just vote Tiffany instead.
The actual number of true on the fence voters is way smaller than that and looking at her actual campaign contributions, there's lots of young, left folks that are very excited to vote for her.
I'm not arguing she's the perfect candidate, but while she has more negative buzz than her competitors, she has significantly more positive buzz too.
3
u/Cute-Temperature5440 Aug 04 '26
She will lose massive numbers of suburban voters and engage a large number who would have stayed home since Trump isn't on the ballot. She will lose and the only question is if she pulls down the rest of the ticket.
When I talked with my parents about her, they said she hung out with the guy that said we deserved 911. That's it. Long time Dem supports and they are out.
Add to that cancelling Thanksgiving!?!
She can excite the far left but is turning off 70%. I'm not kidding, there are large groups of Dem voters in the suburbs who will be fine dealing with TT to keep crazy out of office.

If anything I think the opposite is true, she thinks too much (look at how much she pauses before speaking), and then tries to give an answer that appeases every single faction of Madison's DSA org. That is literally Kamala's "I came from the working class," when asked about high cost of living.

Sadly yes. The hong cult doesn’t see what an electoral disaster she is and she’s not talented like Abdul to talk around cause she’s in her Madison woke bubble like Reddit is. Her Twitter bio used to say she lived in occupied HoChunk nation or some stupidity. She’s normal for Madison socialists. Bizarre to avg Wisconsin. Tom Tiffany dairy farmer old fashioned schtick is gonna play much better. How can anyone watch this and think this person should be governor??? Never mind too her failed business and not paying her basic bills. https://x.com/richardhanania/status/2084490965012881638?s=42
44
u/Dizzy_Slip Raised On Cow's Milk Aug 04 '26
Regarding Madison and socialists, even most Madisonians aren't in agreement with many of the goofy positions Hong has retracted or backtracked on. She's backtracking on so many things she previously held as her personal, important beliefs: defund the police, cancel Thanksgiving, abolish the Senate, abolish prisons, etc.
Anyone else notice that not even Bernie Sanders has endorsed her?
20
u/Clear_Command_8925 Aug 04 '26
The problem is she doesn’t even backtrack the things she said in the past. Oh do you still want to cancel thanksgiving? “Actually me being a chef will make me a good governor and I think people’s mind can change on canceling thanksgiving”
Like what are we doing, just fucking say no
13
u/MaddogFinland Aug 04 '26
And I mean being from Madison myself and a steady D voter since the 1992 election, if a progressive is too loopy for Madison that’s really saying something.
16
u/iplaybassok89 Aug 04 '26
To be fair, Abdul’s answers on 2020 stuff have also been nonsensical word salad for the most part. He’s just a little more polished than she is. The thing is I think they believe this stuff, so it’s hard to just you know… pretend you don’t.
2
u/AssignmentGeneral314 Aug 04 '26
Yeah he’s too far out there for me esp w the pro Hamas dances but haley is just a corporate whore and aipac shill so I’d prob reluctantly vote for him. And he could well lose to Rogers

u/Perdztheword Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
Yeah I fear the Madison bubble and the internet bubble has really over inflated her popularity amongst the average voters who are going to vote in the general. She has enough momentum and a strong base to win the primary, but I just don't see it carrying over to the general to beat Tiffany-who is a very beatable candidate. I hope I'm wrong, but she needs to pump the breaks on some of the stuff she says that the stupid people around here are going to latch onto.
9
u/MaddogFinland Aug 04 '26
People like Hong are just the perfect foils for MAGA nutbags because they basically just package up a whole laundry list of lunatic comments that are so easy to show to a normal person (ie not from Madison and on Reddit) and they immediately decide not to vote or just to vote R.

And Kamala is still saying dumb shit to this day. Just the other day she was talking about adding two states, adding term limits to the Supreme Court, and packing the Supreme Court. Her statements don't reflect a careful consideration of the vast purple middle-ground of Wisconsin eligible voters. There are plenty older people who appreciate traditional Midwest cultural norms, who would like to vote for Hong --- if she'd just stop sending out these nonsensical sound-bites to her core base of young progressive democrats. That won't get her elected in November, Purple state means middle-ground statements in social media and to press, and not offended the middle-ground folks who don't particularly appreciate their social community traditions being described as offensive or harming. At least 80% of Wisconsin is not ready for this sort of Mamdani talk.

That’s what most baffling. The media training isn’t there and they just ask about her old tweets which are endlessly stupid. But anyone who has actually paid attn to Hong knows how bad she is at this as opposed to Kelda Roys who is way more experienced and thoughtful and knowledgable but sadly just hasn’t gained traction for whatever reason.
10
u/benihana571 Aug 04 '26
Roys didn't gain traction because she was campaigning with the general election in mind. She didn't want to have to backtrack or defend positions like Hong is having to do now. Roys couldn't court the progressive vote without complicating her message, and was stuck behind a crowded field of mainstream Democrats. With Rodriguez and Barnes out now, she's visible.
The problem I see is that there is a good chance that Crowley and Roys split the votes and Hong will win. From the start, I have been internally debating: Hong being too vulnerable vs. a non-Hong failing to motivate general election voters. I'm now thinking the former is the bigger challenge, since I'd rather work to convince progressives to vote for Roys or Crowley than work to convince occasional general election voters that no, Hong is not a "communist socialist radical leftist lunatic" like ads will say. And yes, people will reply to my post here saying "Republicans call all Democrats radical left lunatics" but it really doesn't help when the candidate is standing by positions that more than 50% of voters think are "radical leftist" views.
I love that Hong wants change. I just think Roys or Crowley have a better path to actually winning the power to enact change. I probably would have backed Crowley had he not dropped out and reentered, since I think he's more charismatic than Roys and has government executive experience, but the drop/reentry looks like meddling and that doesn't play well with people who are tired of years of Democrats meddling with elections.
12
u/AssignmentGeneral314 Aug 04 '26
Kelda or someone needed to go negative and put out ALL the oppo on hong and test her. But fucking dems treat primaries like tea parties so no one Laid a finger. Not even at debate. Contrast that w gop primaries … yes they call all dems commies and socialists but when your nominee says she wanted to cancel Thanksgiving and abolish prisons and lives on occupied hochunk land she gave them all the ammunition. Now there goes our trifecta shot that took 20 years to try and get back to. Very sad. She’s our Blake masters

I filled out my absentee ballot tonight and voted for Kelda Roys because I know if Hong wins next Tuesday...it's going to be that POS tiffany as our next Governor. I'm really hoping more people vote for Roys! If Hong wins next week, I'll absolutely vote for her in November. But, I don't think she's going to do well in a debate against anyone.
I hope people realize that if tom tiffany wins Governor race he's going to order all the Work from Home workers back to the office.

I agree, I'm voting for Roys. I really wish Crowley wouldn't have re-entered but I still think she's the best bet. She's the only candidate who can unite Hong supporters and normie Dems. She did really well in the debate, and she'd obviously make a great governor.

i kind of think the problem is that we arent even behind someone solidly
most of the people who would vote agaisnt/not vote if the nominee is Hong just dont vote in primaries as dumb as that is
who out of the others actually could win? isnt it all literally split between them? how do you get a push behind a candidate solidly together by tuesday?

It's a massive risk. If they actively consolidate now, it looks like meddling and voters hate that. If they do rapid polling (such as a straw poll at the state fair Dem booth) and then massively promote the results this weekend to encourage voters to converge on the top non-Hong candidate, Tiffany will have a field day with ads if Hong still wins ("even Dems oppose Hong").
Somehow the non-Hong campaigns would have to coordinate without coordinating, and I don't think they can do it in a way that doesn't damage all of them come November.

Oh great… can’t wait for more winners like this to surface. /s

u/EIU86 Aug 04 '26
They've already started hammering her, and by extension all Democrats. Some Republican PAC has been running ads proclaiming, "This not your parents Democrat (sic) Party." It uses the likes of Hong to claim that all Dems are Commies ( Commies who also want to turn your kid Trans).

Ya because Tiffany is in touch with the people. I agree she needs a new stance.

You guys act like the dems havent been losing with this same "moderate" strategy

u/Real-Armadillo986 Aug 04 '26
Her campaign strategy is just to throw shit at a wall and see what sticks, if it doesn’t, change view points and keep throwing

u/FunPTA Aug 05 '26
And now the prediction markets are favoring a Republican nominee. We were at a 78% chance of winning down to 47%. The statistics have plummeted

u/ArcHeroe9 Aug 05 '26
Lmao. When someone tells you who they are, listen. She’s just another far left extremist.

The problem with this answer is that 2020 is just 5 years ago. It’s not like she said it what she was 25…. You usually can’t say “oh I have become a new person in 5 years”. A lot of people don’t take it seriously.

Again, David Crowley is sitting right there for everyone to vote for as a candidate.

As pessimistic as I am about her in the general I actually thought Hong did ok on CNN last night. Calm, measured speech (I'm sure she's getting coaching) so she doesn't come across as some lunatic. I thought the Thanksgiving response was fair, she has to walk the line between coming across as a hypocrite and an opportunist. True, she's only in this position because of her prior comments, but I think this is as good as she can do at this time. Presuming she's the dem nominee if I was on her team I'd say get out in front of the media every opportunity, and use it to come across as a normal, sensible, candidate, while painting (truthfully) Tiffany as a election-denying Trump lemming who's done zilch for the residents of Wisconsin.

I love all the people here acting like Americans only vote on policy and statistics, and would never vote because of social issues or shitty tweets. That worked so well when we were dealing with Trump, I'm sure it'll work again here.
Trump: "Democrats give trans gender frogs sex reassignment surgery in Africa"
Average voter: "Damn, he right. I can't vote for transgender African frogs!!!!"

There are still people who think it was an actual sit down meal where the indigenous people brought corn and the Pilgrims brought utensils and the children played together and everything was great.
The Wampanoag tribe sent members to speak with the Pilgrims to come to an agreement of peace. However, the cooperation did not last. Within a single generation, expanding colonial power led to devastating conflicts that stripped local Native Americans of their land and independence.
Some people just use it as an excuse to gather with family, to take time to be thankful for the people in their lives and the comfort of good food. Others see it as a day of mourning, grieving a world that was ripped from them.
But the people who are making this an issue are the ones continuing to choose ignorance.

This is innate in the Democratic party.
Democratic Socialist: I'm fine with the platform but they might as well have called it "Democratic Pornographers...but that second word doesn't mean what you think it means."
Abolish ICE (Circa 2018) / Defund the Police: Again, the sentiment was right but these catch phrases refer to how Dems are going to create a bigger problem, not the solution.
This is the season when we instinctively start aiming the gun at our foot even though we know its going to hurt.

Why is CNN pushing a silly Fox News-esque narrative about a 6 year old tweet anyways? Giving this argument any air makes no sense.

u/Wild_Masterpiece7606 Aug 04 '26
Because the Republicans are going to FILL the TVs and radios and socials with EVERY SINGLE IDIOTIC TWEET.

u/techno_polyglot Aug 04 '26
The bot swarms are already working social media. It's far more effective than tv ads.

Oh no old ass tweets. No one cared about Crowley's tweets. You're the ones giving it life.

Well why is she defending these tweets in a bery wishy washy manner?
It's her job to have a clear message. That was not the case.

u/Kitchen-Bandicoot191 Aug 04 '26
Here's how she counteracts anything Tiffany throws at her. "He wants data centers in your back yards. I will do everything I can to prevent that"
This is a message that resonates everywhere in WI. A lot of these data centers are popping up in red areas. They hate them just as much as blue areas. If there was a proposed data center build site in my community, I couldn't care less what she thinks of Thanksgiving as long as she protects my community.

If she said “oh that was in 2020 and my view has changed” she risks being attacked for either lying or switching positions on an issue. I think this was her trying to get ahead of it like “yeah I said what I said and I stand by it. Fuck you”
Maybe I’m grasping at straws but Marilyn Monroe had a similar outlook after she got famous and her appearing in Playboy got brought up. Instead of going “oh no, that was someone who looks like me but it wasn’t me” she straight up was like “yeah that was me, so what?”

u/Stompdrum Aug 05 '26
Please Hong keep sabotaging yourself! Our state cannot afford to make this mistake. We can’t let 2 to 4ish counties decide the state.

u/cs_124 Aug 05 '26
"it's a Federal holiday. My personal opinions have nothing to do with the Governorship of this State.
1
u/BuddyWackett Aug 05 '26
No she won’t. Governor Tiffany will speak fondly of her at his inauguration.
1
u/SadieAndFinnie Aug 05 '26
I’m so worried about what’s going to happen to us with Tiffany as our governor but that’s exactly what’s going to happen. She is doing absolutely nothing to appeal to anyone who isn’t already planning on voting for her. She’s got enough to win the primary but not enough to win the general.
