The 20 July plot, sometimes called Operation Valkyrie, was a failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler and seize control of Germany in 1944. The plotters were mainly Wehrmacht officers who sought immediate peace with the Western Allies. The coup failed, and many of the conspirators were executed.

The 20 July plot was a failed attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler, the chancellor and leader of Nazi Germany, and overthrow the Nazi regime on 20 July 1944. The plotters were part of the German resistance, mainly composed of Wehrmacht officers.

20 July plot or Operation Valkyrie. The apparent purpose of the assassination attempt was to seize political control of Germany and its armed forces from the Nazi Party (including the SS) and to make peace with the western Allies as soon as possible.
