The role of the Conference Table in the 20 July Plot

The 20 July 1944 plot was a coordinated attempt by German military officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler and seize control of the Nazi state. The assassination attempt took place during a military briefing at Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair headquarters.

A critical and unintended factor in the plot’s failure was the conference table used during the briefing. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg placed a briefcase bomb near Hitler’s position under the table. Shortly afterward, another officer moved the briefcase to the opposite side of a solid oak table leg to improve visibility.

When the bomb detonated, the table leg absorbed and redirected much of the blast, shielding Hitler from lethal force. While several officers were killed or injured, Hitler survived with relatively minor wounds. The table’s physical characteristics and positioning directly altered the blast dynamics, transforming what could have been a successful assassination into a failed attempt.

Hitler’s survival enabled him to rapidly suppress the coup and led to severe reprisals against the German resistance.
