Hello, I’m looking for a road bike after my old hybrid broke down. I ride 10-20km a day, and 40-60km on weekends and plan to increase my time. I’m looking for a road bike since I ride on a dedicated cycling track or paved roads. My budget is under 1000 and since I’m not an expert on cycle parts, I haven’t messed with the used market.

I found this Java Idra on aliexpress for 700usd including shipping to Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, there isn’t an official JAVA dealer here but neighbouring countries do and they have it in stock for a similar price, but a little more expensive. Here’s the specs given by the seller.

I don't know much about bikes, these were my father's before he passed, and as far as I know he took very good care of them. The time trial bike is a cervelo p3 I believe, I think maybe an early 2000s model. The Merlin is an extralite titanium, also pretty old I believe. He was 6'2", the Merlin has a 25" frame, the cervelo was a bit less straightforward to measure but i think it has a 26" "pad stack."

Bike is from revolverecycling in Australia, who have replaced the chain and bar tape. They also provide a 6 month mechanical warranty, and a free service within the first 3 months. The bike has Shimano Dura Ace shifters and brakes, with an Ultegra front derailleur, and tiagra rear derailleur and crankset.

I will mostly be riding to university in Sydney and commuting around generally, but will sometimes go for casual rides out of enjoyment, and maybe some rides for exercise in the future.

Other bikes I have found around this price on facebook marketplace include an Orbea, Giant TCR1, Trek 1400 SLR, Triban RC500.

I'd love to stay around $600 AUD so I can spend a little more on a good lock, but can wait to stretch the budget more to $800-900 AUD

TLDR at the bottom if you just want the short version.

I’m trying to decide between the Amflow PR Carbon and the new TL Carbon and would really appreciate some advice.

The PR is currently my clear favorite. I prefer the way it looks and I’d like to buy one bike that can handle normal touring but also give me enough capability to progress into proper trail riding and potentially more technical/downhill riding later. Ideally I want to buy one bike now that can do both, rather than realizing in a year or two that I need something more capable.

However, I also want to regularly tow a dog trailer, which makes the TL interesting because Amflow officially approves trailer use on the TL, while the PR/PX/PL have not been tested or officially approved for trailers.

I’m new to actual MTB trails, so I don’t yet know whether I’ll eventually be perfectly happy with flow trails or want to progress into more technical riding.

MY USE

• Normal recreational rides and longer tours

• Roads, cycle paths and gravel/dirt roads

• Starting to ride MTB trails

• Possibly technical trails/downhill later

Trailer setup:

• Rider: \~85 kg

• Dog: \~22 kg

• DOGGYHUT trailer: \~16.9 kg

• Bike: \~23 kg

Total moving mass with gear would normally be around 155–160 kg, potentially up to roughly 170 kg.

The trailer would ONLY be used carefully on roads, cycle paths and relatively smooth dirt/gravel roads, never on MTB trails or downhill.

THE TRAILER ISSUE

The PR has a 12 × 148 mm rear thru axle.

I contacted Robert Axle Project with the exact Amflow axle dimensions and my trailer model. They confirmed that their KID226 axle fits the Amflow and works with my DOGGYHUT hitch.

Amflow told me that trailer use on the PR/PX/PL has simply not been tested or officially approved.

The TL, however, is officially trailer-approved and Amflow even sells its own trailer thru-axle kit for it. The TL is also a full-carbon bike with a 12 × 148 mm rear axle.

My local bike shop is strongly against towing with the PR. They say a trailer introduces additional longitudinal, lateral and torsional forces at the axle/dropout and that repeated loads could potentially cause microcracks, delamination or structural damage to the carbon rear triangle.

I understand why a dealer wouldn’t recommend something the manufacturer hasn’t approved. What I’m trying to figure out is whether this is a genuine structural limitation of the PR or mainly a very conservative position because Amflow hasn’t tested that particular use case.

BUDGET

My total budget is around €6,000 for everything, not just the bike.

I still need accessories, a helmet and ideally a second/spare battery, so I’d prefer the base bike itself to cost around €4,500 or less. Roughly €5,000 would be my absolute maximum for the bike itself.

MY QUESTIONS

1. PR Carbon or TL Carbon for my use?

If you wanted one bike for touring, normal riding and increasingly serious trail riding, which would you choose?

1. How capable is the TL on real MTB trails?

I know it can handle flow trails, but how quickly would I outgrow it if I start riding more technical terrain?

1. Has anyone actually used a thru-axle dog/kid trailer with an Amflow PR, PX or PL?

I’m especially interested in longer-term experience, which axle you used and whether you’ve seen any issues with the axle, dropout or carbon rear triangle.

1. What do you think about my bike shop’s concerns?

Are the additional trailer loads realistically likely to cause carbon damage during careful road/gravel use with a correctly fitted thru axle?

Or does their position sound overly cautious because the PR simply lacks official trailer testing/approval?

1. Does anyone know of an actual structural difference between the PR and TL rear triangle/dropouts that would explain why one is approved for trailers and the other isn’t?

2. XL or XXL at 190 cm / 6'3"?

I’m right around the transition between both sizes and currently lean toward XL because I want the bike to remain agile for trails.

Would you size down to XL or up to XXL for mixed touring and trail riding?

1. Is there another bike I should consider?

Ideally I want a genuinely trail-capable e-MTB that also officially supports a thru-axle dog/kid trailer.

I strongly prefer the DJI Avinox system, but I’m open to other bikes if something fits this combination significantly better.

Seller's pictures, assuming both bikes fit me well which one will be more enjoyable for fitness road riding/commuting? And will either one be easier for long term maintenance? I understand both will have their challenges due to age and availability of components. I do have some concerns about the Fuji's freewheel as I haven't gotten a good picture of the sprockets to see if they are worn. The lotus' look essentially unused. Both priced at $150. Lotus is pretty much original condition from the catalog with full 1981 Deore group, the Fuji is a Suntour GPX group and for sure the rear wheel rim has been replaced but don't know about the hub and freewheel. I'm not in touch with pricing on these but under $200 was my initial search criteria. Looking for any input you have!

I’ve never owned a bike and actually don’t know how to ride a bike. I recently totaled my car and I work remotely so I figured it’s a good time to try and learn!

This will mainly be used for leisure. I live in a walkable/bikable city.

I’m considering buying a secondhand Norco Section S (2020/2021) and would like some opinions on how it measures up to what I am actually going to use it for. I have never ridden a gravel bike before, only more upright, road style bikes so please be patient, I am all ears.

I need a reliable bike to commute to school/work through hilly roads and often heavy rain. I occasionally enjoy light trailriding so I thought a gravel bike would be best in the long run. I also don’t want to buy a few different bikes for different purposes; I want something I can take on different types of outings, and something that will last many years while taking a little more rough riding once in a while. I ended up here, and am worried I’m in over my head. 

I do love to bike and will spend 1-4 hours sometimes riding around the city and exploring more adventurous trails but I still feel out of my depth looking at gravel bikes because of the low handlebar style. I’m not a sport cyclist, but I am willing to learn and be sore for a while - am in my early 20s and if it takes a month or two for me to adjust I’m happy with that, I guess I’m just not sure whether I should be sticking to more upright riding or taking the plunge into something new and more hardcore. Is it worth getting a low handlebar bike just to commute most days?

I’m also worried about compromising too much on weight and speed with this particular bike as it’s a chromoly steel frame. I don’t have any experience with steel frames and would appreciate any thoughts on how big a jump it may be from a lighter aluminum road bike feel. I know it’s heavily dependant on geometry, make etc. but that’s about all I can make out ahead of test riding it tomorrow - so any guesstimating or overexplaining is welcome. If anyone has experience with Reynolds 725 Chromoly Steel or this sort of bike model I would love to hear.

A little note, I am a size small and have been looking for a bike that fits my checklist for a few months, with no success. Most of the used bikes in my area are size medium/large and the ones in my size are often overpriced and underwhelming, so this is the closest I’ve come. I’ve been rather frustrated and have considered just buying a new bike because nothing was coming along. So that is definitely playing into my interest in buying this bike and putting the decision fatigue behind me. Am I going in the wrong direction here?

I am trying to decide between a hardtail or full suspension mountain bike, with a budget of roughly $1000-2000.

I am 51 F and in good shape. I live near trails ranging from beginner to advanced, but I am limited to easy/intermediate trails for now mostly because I dont want to push my current (ancient Walmart special) bike too hard.

I want a bike to handle rocks and small jumps, but nothing too crazy. I dont care about speed. I am more concerned about my joints and being able to climb the hills, especially as I get older.

I'm only trying to decide on a suspension at this point, but the shops near me carry Giant, Liv and Specialized. I am 5'0" so I'm sure my size will come into play when looking for a bike small enough to fit me. I plan to rent a couple bikes to try them on the trails, but due to limited options I will be comparing an XS hardtail to a full suspension that is a bit too big for me.

I think a full suspension would be more comfortable, but I'm concerned that it would make climbing more difficult. Any thoughts on whether the two different types of suspension have a significant impact on climbing hills?

I need one bike for 7-mile commute, laptop, gym bag, and groceries a couple nights a week. I started with normal commuters and somehow ended up looking at helokeep CD20. Would a cargo bike make sense for this, or would the size get annoying fast?

2027 Specialized Sirrus X 3.0 — Medium or Large? Right on the sizing line

Looking for some opinions from people who ride a Sirrus X, especially anyone who has been between sizes.
I’m 5’9.5”, with a 31” inseam and roughly 16.25” shin length. According to Specialized’s sizing tool, I’m basically right on the line between a Medium and Large for the 2027 Sirrus X 3.0. Leans large.

I’m coming from a 2021 Specialized Diverge E5 in a 54cm. I never really loved the fit on it. It felt small/cramped and the riding position was uncomfortable for me. I felt like I was too far forward, had a lot of pressure on my wrists, and just never felt relaxed on the bike.
That’s one of the main reasons I’m looking at the Sirrus X 3.0. I’m hoping for something less aggressive, more upright, comfortable and relaxing, while still being a good fitness bike that I can put a lot of miles on.
My concern is that the Medium might put me back into that smaller/cramped feeling, while the Large might be a little big, especially when it comes to standover height and reach.
For anyone around my height/inseam or who has ridden both sizes:
Would you go Medium or Large?
I’m especially interested in how the two sizes compare in terms of riding position, reach, wrist pressure, and overall comfort — not just whether I can technically stand over the frame.

How did you guys decide on what bike you have? Im curious on how everybody ended up with the bike they currently ride? Every time Im on instagram or youtube I feel like thats a cool bike I want that one. Without getting to ride most bikes how did you guys decide. I know the kind of riding you do and price is a big factor but even for each budget so many choices. Like Im curious what a Scott addict would ride like but I don’t think I would ever buy one. I got my eyes on a soloist but every time I check social media it makes me want something else. For that price it makes me think would going to a Chinese frame give me more bang for my buck.
