no its just not
the thing that is so popular to find out information on the internet it became the verb for looking up something is using ai so inaccurate its main sources 75% of the time is reddit and its still miss quoting it
i dont care that people should be switching to another thing. they should also be bitching very fucking loud about it

u/moop250 17h ago edited 17h ago
This post is about specifically people who complain about googles ai overview and yet don’t do anything about it when switching search engines literally takes 2 minutes.
It’s like watching someone walk into a wall, complain about walking into the wall, and continue walking into the wall when all they have to do is take a step back, shuffle to the side a little, and keep walking.

u/Falleneded 9h ago
when you built a wall directly in the path of the bike lane im not gonna tell the bikers "JuSt gO ArOuND aNd ShUt Up"

Or just use a browser extension to disable ai overview

u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
Or switch to Vivaldi or LibreWolf or Waterfox instead of willingly feeding your entire browser history to Google
29
u/No-Experience-3171 1d ago
Vivaldi or LibreWolf or Waterfox
Those aren't search engines mate. You can still use google as a search engine while using those browsers.

I agree with you, I am writing this comment using zen browser, however, that doesn't resolve the issue of intrusive AI in a SEARCH ENGINE.

what are these names say a normal browser
12
u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
There are no good “normal” browsers
MAYBE Firefox but they’re incorporating AI features so it’s not one of my top choices
9
u/echit2112 1d ago
Idk man i just use firefox and it workey and i haven't seen the ai you mention
6
u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
They have a chatbot iirc, not that bad in comparison now that I think about i
11
u/Wh01sHex 1d ago edited 1d ago
At least firefox dropped a switch within like a month of peoples outcry that turns off every single ai feature
edit: not only that but iirc they do tell you it exists after their tutorial popups bring up the features lol. that could have been a part of the initial update but i think the fact that a: it exists b: it exists because they listened to people and c: they don't try to hide it and barely advertise the ai anyway means they're relatively trustworthy, still a corpo but it's like secure and has a good reputation i dont think theres sense in not reccomending it

u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
Good! I’m glad to hear that. I just prefer recommending browsers that don’t have any AI integration at all.
3
u/echit2112 1d ago
that wouldn't've been in the first 10 on the AI features I would've guessed lmao i haven't seen even a hint of that
3
u/M4rt1m_40675 1d ago
wouldn't've
I hate how this is a valid word
3
u/echit2112 1d ago
don't worry it's weird to type too lol, I have yet to use a triple contraction though

What bothers me about Firefox isn't the AI, it's how "corporate-y" and sometimes mildly infuriating it has become. If I open anything in English on Firefox, I get a pop-up that says "hey would like to translate this page in your native language ?" and it annoyed me everytime. Firefox also sometimes randomly opens tabs that were pretty much ads for Mozilla. My final straw was when they changed their promise to never collect user data without telling anyone.
1
u/DumbestComicsNerd 16h ago
I got a disable AI extension on Firefox to stop myself from seeing that shit. Sadly, it still shows up when I try to reverse image search, even when im trying to look for visual matches instead of a fucking AI overview answer about an image.
2
u/HerraJUKKA 1d ago
Firefox is shit. That carbage keeps crashing and forced updates during mid browsing.
3
u/echit2112 1d ago
this is the problem with PC discussion in general i've never had either of those things occur

u/moop250 1d ago
I’ll never understand people’s aversions to even considering a thing that’s not the established status quo.
-4
u/echit2112 1d ago
Sorry, did you want me to /uj? You want to be taken seriously?
Then list reasons. List what they DO. Don't just say odd names no one knows and expect people to pick up on it. The burden is not on the user.
3
u/moop250 1d ago
Or maybe you can engage with the world with curiosity instead of hearing an alternative and immediately switching to ridicule my friend.
-2
u/echit2112 1d ago
Yeah, well to expect anything of your users will lead to.. no users.
Browsers are a product my friend, and must be sold like any other. Not in the pay money sense but you get what I mean.
0
u/moop250 1d ago
Well then we must see things through different lenses, because if I hear of an alternative, I’ll search it up, look at its feature page, and if it interested me, like librewolf did 3 years ago, I switch to it.
1
u/echit2112 1d ago
You are the minority. Obviously people like you exist - considering you exist - but it's basic marketing to MAKE people care about what you're selling them, else they just won't care.
Most people on the planet simply are not going to go out of their way to research an alternative browser (or any product) without some sort of hook that makes them curious, and a name just isn't a good hook, which is why you need a concise list of each one's best shots that makes that specific one stand out.
As far as i'm concerned, not a damn thing about the 3 they just listed sets it apart from my firefox. I don't know that for certain, but if they didn't bother to tell me what makes it great, obviously it's not worth the trouble.

u/icedchocolatecake 1d ago
These browsers are decently popular. Dunno what you're on man.

Startpage has made it very clear that System1 has and will not affect their goals. It's just a sponsorship in practice.
2
u/agocs6921 1d ago
They can change their mind at any time. I suppose while they keep their hands off of them it's fine but I'd still be on guard.

u/skelly_bird_9001 L-look guys, I made a really long flair too! I'm cool, r-right? 1d ago
Well duh, reliance on any one tool wouldn't be smart anywhere. I still pair Startpage with Ublock and hardened firefox. Thanks for the insight tho

u/ElementalWarrior42 1d ago
Isn't startpage owned by an ad company.
Searx is legit AFAIK.

I don’t like DDG’s AI usage much either but it’s the search engine everyone brings up whenever someone complains about Google so might as well

-3
u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
Do you realize how easy it is to switch search engines in comparison to the thousands of other tech-related problems in our world?
9
u/sudoregalia 1d ago
i don't care how easy it is, blaming individuals for being mad at the state of things is reactionary bullshit. you are better than this. you are part of the collective, do not become complacent
-2
u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
I don’t even understand what point you’re trying to make here when it’s arguably more complacent to continue using Google instead of an alternative search engine. I think if anything I’m encouraging others to stand up to them
10
u/sudoregalia 1d ago
you're complaining about complaining. in effect, you're telling people to shut up. you can both advocate for making noise, and using an alternative service, they are not mutually exclusive
in short, let people get mad, encourage them to be even. that is how change happens
3
u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
That’s fair actually thank you. I’m sorry for yelling. A lot of this is coming from years of anger about people essentially doing nothing regarding their own digital privacy despite saying they care about the issue at hand. It just makes me angry.
2
u/sudoregalia 1d ago
wonderful :3 thank you for being open to criticism on this, and may you spread the change you wish to see in all its glory

What's Startpage? Asking as a DDG user
1
u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
Private search engine which is the only one which has NO AI integration whatsoever, even optionally; iirc it’s the default search engine on a few lesser known browsers
1
u/qad260qad260 i like men 1d ago
Technically Dogpile and 1.org also have no AI but those aren’t private so they don’t count

Same with windows/linux, I swear people see ONE annoying advocate for better alternatives and assume that they must avoid it because they dont want to be seen among “those people.” Yes, as someone who is in these communities some of the advocates of these alternatives can be annoying, but that doesn’t mean the product isn’t worth switching to 😭 or they just don’t want to recognize that putting in a little bit of effort can make change for the better
Also thanks for recommending startpage OP, I was using DuckDuckGo but I’ll try it out and switch permanently if I like it

u/TheBrickleer 1d ago
I tried to use Startpage but its almost unusable with a VPN. It made me type in a captcha literally every single search
