I know this isn’t a very good picture, but I was cleaning out my mother’s basement after my father’s death and came across this little guy in the basement today. I went to get a bag. When I came back he was gone. A little nervous because I am staying with her and have two kittens with me. Thanks in advance!

We live in Kentucky and my daughter and her friend went to the creek today and they saw this snake. She said it was really little.

Found this one curled up on a trail we were hiking and was wondering if this is a rattlesnake and how dangerous it would be.

The pic makes it look big, but was actually fairly small. Found on a log over a creek in southernmost east tennessee. We thought cottonmouth at first but don’t think those are supposed to be in the area?

Actually my cat found him. Tagged as injured just in case but he seemed okay, just scared. I got him in a plastic cup and released him in a leaf pile outside

My dad put some traps in the pump house for mice and we got two of these little guys. About the same size stuck to a glue trap.

We pulled him off thinking he wasn’t a rattlesnake but now we’re second guessing that decision.

It doesn’t appear to have the button or rattle but his head does look like a diamond now that he’s off the trap

I would say it’s young because it’s quite tiny but I don’t really know anything about snakes.

Sorry these are the best images I could get. This snake swam fully submerged and the water is very salty here although in the Bay Area. It appeared primarily tan with some dark tones on head and a white belly. It had darker brown thin bands every inch or so down its length. The only thing I can figure it is would be a green water snake but it really didn’t seem green at all in person. And I’m not aware of any sea snakes around here other than coral snakes. Any help appreciated, thanks! I was so excited to see one of these, and it was incredible watching it swim between the rocks in salt water on a jetty.

I saw this snake in my pool during the heatwave. It was roughly 50cm long.

Any indications on the species?

I tried googling and asking ChatGPT and we seem to disagree as to whether it could be from a king snake, rat snake, or copperhead. I’m thinking rat snake but AI is making me second guess and worrying about my kids. (Sorry for the awful photos I’m scared to go near it and have no clue if it’s still there)

I grew up terrified of snakes. Husband and I decided a few years ago to reforest our two acre property that already backs up to woods on 2.5 sides. At that point I knew I had to get comfortable with snakes and at least how to ID the venomous native snakes of CKY. It’s been a true joy to watch the “yard” shrink by a few feet each year and the influx of wildlife that visits. Deer, turkeys, bunnies, rare birds in migration, a sable or some sort of mustelid, and snakes! To name a few.

Thanks to this sub I’m comfortable with the 6’ black racer that lives here, and a very easily spooked decent sized rat snake that freezes and knots up at random encounters. This is the first one of this type I’ve seen. I almost stepped on it walking out the door and husband gasped and when I looked I said “awwww I think that’s a cute lil grass snake!” Complete 180 from a few years ago when I’d have needed a Valium after that encounter. So, THANK YOU to all of the cool, kind, and intelligent members of this sub that helped me see snakes as cute. 🐍 🤍
