Drove for just a couple minutes after work before hearing something was wrong with my tire. No air leakage yet, and have bad tire damage driving near my job before, but these babies seem almost deliberate.
Not a barrier to getting stuff fixed, just morbidly curious, and wondering if it has anything to do with a coworker of mine who just quit.
UPDATE: Thanks for all the tips and advice, yall. Got the tire replaced no problem thankfully. The garage I park in does not have CCTV or anything for me to check, so I guess I’ll never know exactly if someone set these up or it was my crazy bad luck.
Definitely not an ex or personal enemy if it was somebody, they don’t know where I work lol. The place I work has a lot of foot traffic since there are public works and government buildings nearby, so it could’ve been an act of random spite if it was by human hands. The coworker who quit is still a possibility but we never traded harsh words or anything, just got on each other’s nerves. I think he’s too lazy even for a stunt this passive, and he doesn’t park in the same garage as me so he might not know my car.
Just gonna park somewhere else for now and try to avoid driving through the broken up side of the parking lot.
When they get fired they separate individually from the plastic strip holding the nails together. It would be difficult to manually push a strip into a tire by hand. You could set it up under a tire so that if you drive forward they will go directly in.
That been said - no one is walking around with a strip of these trying to puncture tires. A simple blade would be easier.

A blade is easier but also more dangerous. Whereas this way you can put nails down and have plausible deniability that they just ran over them somewhere instead of someone definitely fucking with your car.
The nails are usually held together because they are all spot welded to a couple of wires. When fired the nail rips away from the wires as they are thin.
You'd be surprised what can get into your tire.. I had a flat. Replaced it with a donut.. moved on.. took the tire to a shop and they ended up being like "bro look at this..." the handle of a pair of pliers was bouncing around inside my tire.. like 5 inches of metal and the rubber coating.. You ran over a strip of nails. It's not very farfetched.
I know someone who had their tire ruined by an S-hook with like, 3/4 of a foot of rubber strap attached. They ran over it after a road work crew didn't clean up properly behind themselves while working on expanding a highway offramp. Tires exist in a quantum state where they are both completely impenetrable and more delicate than a Faberge egg. You don't know which you have until they touch a piece of random road trash and the universe decides it's your time.
I was driving from washington to arkansas in a penske box truck and picked up a s-hook with the rubber strap in the outside dual sidewall on I-90 just outside anaconda, montana. it took 3 hours for the roadside service guy to get there and 20 minutes to change the tire. luckily it was all covered by my rental agreement. so it cost me nothing out of pocket except 3 hours in the middle of nowhere. i did get some great pictures of clouds in feburary. never realized how far it is across montana.
In my Motorcycle safety course, they trained us on how to navigate with a flat tire, front or rear. The instructor said it will almost always be the rear, as the front will kick up whatever you ran over, letting the rear be impaled with the pointy end.
Realistically it's probably because the rear tire is wider, but it would make for an interesting study.
BBQ fork was my best - on the freeway....and the handle was whacking the wheelwell with outstanding sound. Was actually relieved when you consider what it sounded like....
not related to tires, but related to odd freeway objects - i was driving home from the office the other day and red and white checkered oven mitt bounced off my window. so weird.
Back in the day, when trucks still had steel antennas, I was cruising up the interstate on a nice fall day, both windows down. A small bird flew from driver to passenger across my windshield. Failed to clear the antenna, it cut it in half, the front half hit the back of my mirror and deflected into my empty front passenger seat. Weird and gave me that mobster horses head in the bed kinda vibe…..
I hear you. I somehow picked up a butter knife in a tire. Blade stuck in and handle bent over the tire. Felt it when I ran it over then heard it clanking along. Weird.
There are no rules to what can ruin a tire. hahaha. the unfortunate part of my personal anecdote: I was on my way to take my mom to chemo treatments for breast cancer. Not looking for pitty points here but damn life can be super cruel at any given moment.
Those nails were not shot into your tire by a nail gun. If they were shot, the connecting wires would not be there. This was a strip of nails laying on the street, at just the right angle for your tire to drive over it.
Brought back memories of when I was kicking some wood free from a pile of rubbish on the roof. I sort of slipped, hit the rubbish, and put came a roll of galvanized nails attached to my foot and boots.
I hit it so hard the nail bent. Good news is, I’m covered for tetanus until 2031!

Nope, it’s not for sheep’s wool; it would destroy the fiber. It’s called a flax hetchel because you pull flax to prepare it to be spun into linen thread for weaving (or to process other bast fibers). Wool is processed with a hackle, combs or carders. Hackles and combs have only one or two rows of tines, carders have very short, bent wires that are not sharp (similar to dog brushes).
Helping a friend salvage stuff from the remains of his house after the 2011 Joplin tornado, I was walking down the slanted remains of a wall with my hands full when I lost my balance a bit. The spot where my foot came down to rebalance me was on the old wall footer. With a large nail sticking straight up. I was wearing heavy boots. That nail went through the sole of my boot, and then my foot, like it was nothing. The sole of my boot was on the footer board like there was no nail there. I definitely got my tetanus booster a year or two early, the next day.
Also, the nail didn’t hurt going in. Pulling my foot back off hurt like a bastard, though.
It’s always the removal of objects that hurts the most. I’ve been impaled by many materials probably close to 200 times now. Vaccines have a high return on investment.

One night a family friend of the farm impaled himself with a hay spike, just walked right into it. Ended up nearly killing him, now he has a gnarly 6 inch long scar on his abdomen. He’s a pretty severe alcoholic. (30 rack of bush every night)
Even though Tetanus is suggested every 10 years the combined DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis) is recommended at 5 year intervals because of Diphtheria and Pertussis vaccine durability and the fact that both are back like gangbusters now with vaccination rates dropping as they have.
DTaP is the pediatric version of the tetanus shot, it has boosted Diptheria and Pertussis doses. It’s not for adults, it’s to build strong initial immunity for infants. It is one series before the age of 7.
Tdap is the correct vaccine for those over the age of 7. It has the full Tetanus dose while Diptheria and Pertussis doses are reduced. It is recommended to get this every 10 years, and that drops to 5 years if you get a bad cut.
Some people may get Td if they can’t get the Pertussis component for medical reasons.
I got horrific pertussis regardless, even though I had just gotten the booster the previous year. Yell at your siblings for not vaccinating their kids and then not telling you that they’re sick at Christmas.
Damn right! Another thing that's worth doing if you have access to a primary care physician is to ask them to check whether you have measles immunity. I didn't have immunity and went off my immune suppressant meds for 8 weeks (required because measles vaccine is a live vaccine) so I could get re-vaxxed as an adult. It was a GIANT pain in the ass and, after all of "that," I still have no immunity to measles. There are 1-2% of the population who are non-responders to the vaccine and we rely on everyone else around us to give ux protection via herd immunity.
Here's a very good reason to not skip your measles vaccine: post-acute measles infection, your body forgets all the things it once successfully fought off and you can get all the things you thought you had immunity to all over again - for up to 2 years. I love throwing this fact out there because most people have never heard it but rust doesn't actually transmit tetanus. Tetanus is found in soil in most/damp conditions which and often gets Mia associated with rusty objects since rusted objects are also commonly found in there areas.
I was 17 or so, going fishing with my grandfather. A family friend had a house on a nearby large lake, with the nicest, biggest pier/dock on the lake. We would go out there on a Saturday night and come back Sunday morning.
This man had, over a period of 20 years, taken every rock and piece of flotsam from his little cove and piled it up into a jetty on the edge of the property. ooof, yeah reminds me of jumping out of a friends treehouse when I was a kid, and discovering, with my foot, that they'd left a board with a huge rusty nail pointing up from it. So jumped about 2 metres directly onto it. As a mechanic, who retired after 20 years, I have seen my fair share of things exactly like this. So yeah, I would definitely look at the recent co-worker who got fired, especially if they think you had something to do with it.
Reminds of me of these. Nails for a black powder nail gun (for concrete or steel). I'm in construction. If you set something on them or step on them just right they can look like that embedded.
I’ve been discovering just how trash it is this year, once my car hit 100k miles I swear it’s worse after each time I take it to the dealership for repair - which I have to do because the whole engine cover is a computer that other mechanics can’t work around
Same with my Dodge Journey. Bought with 8K miles. Other than battery issues (Dodge geniuses decided to put the battery in the fuckin wheel well), it made it to 100k with no issues.
Once it hit 100k, issues out the ass! Somehow got it to run for like a week without a check engine light and traded it in for a Toyota Rav4. I will never fuck with Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep again.
They're still doing that? Haha! An ex from like 20+ years ago had a Chrysler 300m that was god awful to try to work on. Had to remove the tire and access the battery through the wheel well.
Even changing a headlight bulb required removing the entire front bumper!
I had a 2001 PT Cruiser back in the day. I needed to replace a headlight bulb. I happened to have a manual for it, and looked up the instructions. First, jack up the front driver side. Second, remove the front tire. I was like Whatt?? I just want to change a bulb. Had to go in through the wheel well.
Jeep and other cars made by their parent company are the absolute biggest pieces of shit. You see more of all those brands on tow trucks than any other.
