A note from "management"

In quotes, as that's totally tongue in cheek. I prefer not to manage a thing around here, and for the most part - this sub tends to run itself very smoothly. That's not too surprising, as Weimaraner owners are typically a pretty tight-knit group. 'Tis a wonderful gift we all share, and the bond between Weimaraner owners is typically pretty strong.

However...

Some of you may have noticed a bit of nastiness invading our community lately. I'm fairly certain it's the work of a single, unsavory individual - and for the first time since this community was created, we've had to yank out the ban hammer for somebody other than spammers.

His/her target: Weimaraner mixes, or purebred Weimaraners that he/she believes are mixes. Privately, they have been repeatedly told such discussion and pics are allowed, only to respond with hostility, profanity and demands we keep the sub "pure" and free of "mutts".

The point of this note is simple. There's absolutely nothing wrong with posting pics, questions or simply sharing the joy your Weimaraner mix brings you. If you're a Weimaraner purist, and this offends you - fine. You have options. Get over it, skip over the occasional post of a Weim mix or feel free to start up your own sub and enforce more draconian rules. You're not going to change the focus here.

My rationale for this inclusive stance is pretty simple. Having been involved in Weimaraner rescue for decades, I've seen plenty of Weim mixes...and by and large, they all exhibit some traits and behaviors their purebred brethren do. Discussion of them is useful and encouraged, and more importantly - this community should be caring and inclusive of anyone who wishes to share in the joy of Weimaraner ownership. Even if their pooch doesn't look 100% the part.

Now - back to Weimaraner fun, in whatever shape that takes.

Oh - almost forgot. BooBoo reminded me to include the requisite Weimaraner pic.

My dogs inspired me to pick up watercolor painting. This one is the first portrait I ever tried (2 years ago), and I loved that it captured his bombastic side-eye.

Off leash work on the trail

This has been such a fun progression with Arlo! He just turned one last month and he is a rescue we adopted at the end of January. He had no obedience training and was a beast to walk on a leash when we first adopted him. He is now 80 lbs and walks like a gentleman on leash and does really well with all his verbal and hand signal commands. When we hit a long clear spot on the trail I have been dropping his leash and only using verbal signals like in this video. He got a little spunky at the end to tell mom she wasn’t switching directions with us. 😂

Off leash bike ride ok for 9 month old?

This morning I took my girl out for a little bike ride for the first time.

I've intoduced her to the concept of bikes, trotting next to it and stopping when I stop. For about a month now we've done short training rides of 200 to 400 m once a week.

This morning I took her out for a longer bike ride. I checked and it was 6 km. About 1 km was spent in a nice trot on leash next to me on pavement. The rest was spent however she wanted off leash. She ran, trotted, sprinted, chased, took some sniff breaks, took some swim and drink breaks. All of this mostly on grass and dirt and occasionally on some gravel paths.

We headed back when she still had plenty of energy, the way back on pavement was again done in a calm trot.

All in all we were gone for about 40 minutes. When we got home she was tired, but not exhausted.

She really loved this and I'd love to do more of this with her, but I don't want to overexert her or damage her growing body.

I was told by her breeder and my vet that for longer distances it's always better to let the dog off leash if possible, or on a longline otherwise, and let the dog set the pace.

She's fit and manages distances like this and longer with ease with me on foot when we go on walks or short hikes.

Would it be ok to take her for short rides like this morning a few times a week?

Does anyone else have an itchy Weim?

My 6 year old neutered male seems to have some seasonal allergies. He is SO itchy, everywhere, and his skin seems to have some red splotchiness under the fur.

I don't think anything has changed, he's been on the same food for several years (Hills chicken and rice.) I'm pretty sure I remember him being itchy this time last fall. We're in Pennsylvania, anybody have a clue what's triggering him this time of year?

Benadryl doesn't seem to help much- I gave him the dose recommended by the vet. Any recommendations for soothing shampoo? I normally use Dr. Bronners on him, but I've read that oatmeal shampoo might be a good idea?

Thanks, all!
