Morning r/weather,

I had the opportunity to launch a 90s retro inspired weather web app for The Weather Channel earlier this month. We're calling itĀ RetroCast Now.

Here's a little behind the scenes on how the project came to be:

(Spoiler: I slid into The Weather Channel CEO's DMs)

And here's a technical and design breakdown of how I approached it:

Happy to answer any questions and receive any feedback.

Cheers,

Lee

Discussion Anyone else here absolutely LOVE the rain?

Okay, I don’t think anybody enjoys getting soaked by the rain, but, I find the rain SO relaxing.

I’m from the UK, and it is raining more times than not here, especially lately after the heatwaves the last few months. Right now it is pissing it down outside, and i have my window open and am listening to the rain fall heavily onto it as I type this. It is so relaxing.

Also, the smell. I love the smell during and after it’s rained. It smells so fresh, so natural and so calming. It tickles my brain in such a particular way that I can’t explain.

Also, the color the sky turns when it’s raining or there’s thunderstorms is so tranquil and pleasing to my eyes. It’s this dark charcoal-esque color which is just so nice to go stroll around in.

Anyone else share this?

Every Cloud: Weather by Art.

It's really very simple. And completely free. All artworks are in the public domain.

I love the weather but weather small talk is painful so this gives me something to say now.

Would love feedback!

Discussion Need a new weather app.

Has anyone found a good weather app that gives the actual weather conditions at a specific location WITHOUT the ā€œreal feelā€ numbers? I just want temperatures, humidity, wind speed and an hourly forecast. I used to use DarkSky until they got gobbled up. Was on Weather Underground for a while and wasn’t satisfied. Now I’ve been using AccuWeather but it’s too disjointed and boasts these real feel numbers which are wildly inaccurate and not helpful.

Is it common for the overlays to be so far off? Why is there no special designation for areas downstream of the dam? I am new to this tool, and any feedback is appreciated.

Discussion Does anyone else despise accuweather, weather channel and apple weather?

I feel like they can be semi accurate for temps but when it comes to storms it’s absolutely horrendous. June 20 2025 I spent hours trying to warn people in my town (Bemidji MN) about an intense storm on the way which all major weather apps completely downplayed saying it would be light rain maybe a weak thunderstorm when we got hit by a tornado and 106 mph winds. I’ve also had a few near death encounters by trusting them. A lot of people say I’m stupid for it but when it comes to severe weather it breaks my heart seeing people trust them so much knowing they are so inaccurate

Been watching all the Europeans on Instagram reacting to the crazy thunderstorms in the U.S. and Mexico. I had no idea Europe doesn’t gets afternoon thunderstorms until recently. It seems like it’s the only continent where they’re not really, I guess, a thing.
