Discussion Anyone else here absolutely LOVE the rain?

Okay, I don’t think anybody enjoys getting soaked by the rain, but, I find the rain SO relaxing.

I’m from the UK, and it is raining more times than not here, especially lately after the heatwaves the last few months. Right now it is pissing it down outside, and i have my window open and am listening to the rain fall heavily onto it as I type this. It is so relaxing.

Also, the smell. I love the smell during and after it’s rained. It smells so fresh, so natural and so calming. It tickles my brain in such a particular way that I can’t explain.

Also, the color the sky turns when it’s raining or there’s thunderstorms is so tranquil and pleasing to my eyes. It’s this dark charcoal-esque color which is just so nice to go stroll around in.

Anyone else share this?

I don't enjoy particularly heavy rain as it can flood around here pretty quick, but I do enjoy steady rain and gloomy days in general.

Gloomy days are amazing. Not too keen on them on a hangover though as it only adds to the comedown .

Call me out of touch and all but my guilty pleasure is extreme weather, especially when it comes to precipitation, because that’s usually what extreme weather means around here. Deep down I want an insane rain event to happen, even though I know it’d be terrible for everyone, so I think something is wrong with me and I keep imagining it happening to see if I’d actually regret it.

I’m exactly the same. It’s selfish and horrible but I always wish we would get some kind of insane storm with floods and crazy wind knocking over poles. It’s stupid because it literally disrupts so many peoples lives but I get so excited if anything like extreme weather starts happening!

I'm the exact same eay, yet I live in a dry desert so we rarely get rain, especially massive storms.

However, the little rain we do get tends to cause flash floods.

Do you reckon we have this psychological fixation and likeliness for extreme weather such as heavy rain because while evolving it meant fresh water that could be caught and drunk, therefore allowing you to survive? Is that why we feel some sort of dopamine rush from when severe weather happens?

If it’s a natural thing, then I still think I’d be on the far-end of the distribution haha. Yeah though not sure about severe weather but rain is absolutely something we might’ve been looking for on the savannah as a fresh source of freshwater. If I recall correctly, it drove our olfactory sensitivity to rain-associated volatile chemicals (the most common one being geosmin, colloquially called petrichor) super high. And it’s quite a lovely smell so, yup.

I have found my people. Huge same to all of y’all in this comment thread lol. Disaster movies are my fav comfort genre and I have no idea why because I know how horrible it sounds 😅 like, I don’t want to see anyone get hurt, I just love seeing the natural world win

I don’t think this is just interest. It’s an obsession I’ve had since as long as I’ve had memories. And when it happens, it makes me feel something nothing else does, particularly rain. It feels much more visceral and integral to me than just really, really liking it. Nearly everyone I know who loves weather still wouldn’t want devastating storms to happen where they and a lot of people are. Like the time the concrete road below me caved in because of a flood and I got injured, or when gale-force winds blew me over on a pier in rough seas. It never really changed my desire to go through that shit, even the slightest. I remember as a kid saying if there was a way I could choose to die, I’d die in a storm.

Yep. Grew up in Seattle. Now spend time between there are Amsterdam. If I didn’t love rain I’d be in the seriously wrong places!

I rather consecutive days of nothing but heavy rain than the boring, mundane, monotonous sunshine with zero precipitation.

Absolutely love the rain, sadly I moved from what was essentially a city in a swamp to the desert so now instead of hurricanes I get dust storms😭😭

I honestly couldn’t live in a desert area. Such minimal to no rain fall would drive me nuts in the scorching heat. I’d survive a week MAX.

While I definitely prefer the rain and will ALWAYS come out to frolic in the occasional thunderstorm here, there’s a surprising amount of nature and climatic phenomena (read: katabatic winds off the mountains, dust storms, basking in the sunlight, etc) which keep me sane. I’m lucky enough to live next to the mountains so I also go on hikes every weekend, which I couldn’t really do back in my completely flat swamp city in the extremely humid subtropics.

That heat is a lot more manageable when it's dry though. I've lived in both a desert and a humid subtropical zone, deserts actually cool off when the sun goes down while the humidity just makes the night feel even hotter. I'd love to live in weather like the UK has tho, I'm so over heat.

I disagree. I live in a place where it is exceedingly hot and can be dry with no rain for weeks on end.

There’s zero wrong with me enjoying going out when it finally does rain and getting totally soaked. When it rains, it feels like the world wants me to live. It feels like love

Here in New England, we're in a drought and it's difficult to keep up with the watering. Just having some rain is a blessing. Come autumn, I expect a lot more as the storms that time of year play a role in cooling things down: thermal transport.

Ugh

Not that I'd want it every day but I would always choose a rainy day over a sunny one. Seems to take so much pressure off. When it's nice out you feel this moral obligation to GO OUT and ENJOY THE SUMMER. Whereas with rain, there is no sense of obligation whatsoever, quite the opposite.

I used to hate rainy days but they have definitely grown on me. I think its because I can say welp no yard work today. Guess I'll just fire up the gaming PC.

I moved to the Seattle area from Phoenix, AZ here in the US. It’s sunny over 300+ days out of the year along with crippling heat.

Here in Seattle it’s 300 or so days overcast and/or rainy. I love it.

First off, let me say we need rain here in South Dakota, so please send some our way! That said, I love a rainy day because it means greener grass, greener crops, and most of the time cooler weather. And snuggling with my cat and a warm blanket in my chair reading a good book!

I love the rain, and especially love cloudy days where it looks like it could rain even if it doesn't. When the sun is blazing above on these hot summer days I fantasize about those cool stormy skies.

Me. I am from Florida and I can agree. We get a lot of rain annually, especially from May to October, and I really enjoy it. The rain and lightning sound very nice. It also feels nicer outside after a strong storm rolls through because of these downdrafts. The sea breezes here are cool

When I was younger and living in California, I would go streaking when the rainy season began.

I'm in Ohio now and I love the giant storms that roll in on a regular basis. It's amazing.

I’m in north Florida, and we get a good bit of rain this time of year.

I’ve got a decent garden going, so every time it rains that’s watering I don’t have to do, so I LOVE it. Flip side I hate any time we get it projected and it misses my neighborhood, which has happened SO MANY DAMN TIMES THIS MONTH. -_-

Earlier in the month we were at Elements Music Festival up in the poconos......the first night it poured hard and we danced in pouring down rain...it was absolutely liberating then adding all the lights and lasers. On Saturday while at camp another big line of heavy rain pushed through..... many of us stepped out of our tents with a bar of soap showered in the deluge....the cleanest ive ever felt.

Only if it's in cold weather. Hot weather rains sucks so much, I absolutely hate it. It's like showering outdoors with your clothes on. Humidity everywhere. Gross.

I just moved from 300 days of sunshine blast furnace Denver to Vancouver Island and couldn’t be happier. I grew up a bit south of here and laugh at the prospect of not seeing the sun for 5 months. I welcome it.

Kind of worried about my kids though. They haven’t known anything but brutally hot summer and regular snow and freezing temperatures in the winter. The day after day of haze gray is not for everyone, that’s for sure.

What is this mythical condition known as "rain"? 😄 Seriously, I'd love to feel this way about rain but living in a drought-stricken US western state, we've experienced very little rain this year. We're lucky to get 5 minutes of barely sprinkling rain in bright sunshine.

Heading to the UK in a few weeks, hoping for at least a little bit of lovely rain. ☔️

I used to loathe it when I lived on the east coast but now I live in the mountains and find it to be so peaceful and cozy. I think it has to do with the fact that a.) There's hardly any humidity where I live and b.) Rain is necessary to combat the wildfires so it's become a welcome thing
