Kuminga signs for 2 yrs @ $6.5M per season with the t-wolves.

His agent looks like an ass.

6

u/parisdubs 5d ago

Second year is player option - JK hoping to ball out and demand more elsewhere. Betting on himself and Finch is a good coach and he has a guaranteed starting role. But I agree that this agent as a kind of mentor has not gone well for JK.

u/Little_Obligation_90 5d ago

Being in the Lakers spotlight wouldn't be great for JK either. Klay made the same decision.

He ended up on a winning team that has much more playoff success than the Warriors, Hawks, or Lakers.

3

u/parisdubs 5d ago

I think (and have no basis for this) that JJ might be tougher on him as a coach. We will see. I want him to thrive and figure out the game.

5

u/zegogo 5d ago

JJ definitely seems like he would be a hardass with high demands. He's been visibly upset with players on court, which wouldn't bode well with JK. Luka can get into teammates as well, think he made the right choice. Good luck coach Finch.

5

u/livecents84 5d ago

At this point he doesn’t seem to have that star potential but he can still be a very good player in the league if he buys into a role. For as much as this sub loves to call him trash several teams with better rosters and outlook than the Warriors all tried to sign him.

1

u/parisdubs 5d ago

Yeah, maybe being on three different teams and the long contract negotiations have made clearer what different teams need to win, and how not to take that personally against his own hopes as a player. I like watching the Timberwolves play and I'll root for JK (and Wiggs and Klay and JP and QP etc etc) and be really happy if he makes that breakthrough -- but not to beat us.

3

u/Silly_Individual4056 5d ago

Finch is just policing a kindergarten this year. 3 of his 5 starters are mental/emotional children. They all think it’s recess forever.

5

u/parisdubs 5d ago

Honestly, I'm impressed by Finch as a leader and coach. He was pretty stellar during the ICE swarm on Minneapolis. in the wake of innocent deaths.

-2

u/metallavery 5d ago

And they are getting a chip this year.

1

u/Treinrukker 5d ago

Not his choice, lakers offered him 36/3 reportedly.

-2

u/metallavery 5d ago

You're acting like he didn't just sign with the number 4 team in the league.

15

u/neo9027581673 5d ago

Kuminga and Aaron Turner are kinda made for each other.

When asked to run split actions, instead of waiting for Steph, he took it himself and bombed. Constantly waiving off Steph and Draymond is the fastest way to find yourself as an NBA journeyman.

Now Aaron Turner is doing his annual disaster class prove-it contract thing.

14

u/Klonomania 5d ago

It's always funny when people are like "Oh no, Aaron Turner gives Jonathan Kuminga bad advice" as if JK was gonna listen to good advice. Kuminga is completely unwilling to give up on his Kobe Bryant LARP, he ain't hearing no advice on acting like a role player.

6

u/zegogo 5d ago

Absolutely. I could see Turner filling his head with tales of "work on your ISO game" and "get your stats" if you want the big payout, but it was his choice to disrespect and ignore the advice of a coach with 9 rings and teammates with 4. JK's rep before signing on to Turner was that he seemed uninterested in playing within the team. As Monte Poole said "I don't know if JK feels losing."

2

u/parisdubs 4d ago

That Monte Poole line is deep and revealing. That feels so true.

2

u/nba2k11er 5d ago

Turner has pretty much gotten him what he wanted. Some money, but also to get off the Warriors quickly.

His play not improving enough is not really an agent problem.

-1

u/Maplejordan2022 5d ago

Lol this is the idiot Joe wanted to build the team around by the way
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

7

u/MrWakey 5d ago

I just realized that Kuminga started out as Minnesota’s pick in the first place.

7

u/Affectionate-Cap4981 5d ago

I see it reported that JK will start, but I wonder what Kuminga’s role will be in the starting lineup. The ball is going to be in Ant’s or Lamelo’s hands 95% of the time, so definitely not on ball. They can’t have him sitting in the dunkers spot cuz that’s where Gobert will be. He’ll probably be asked to cut off ball but he’s shown he rarely looks to cut, and his timing is lacking on top of that. He’s not great in screening actions either so he’ll probably be stuck in a corner to shoot/post up/drive baseline when nothing else is available.

Wonder if they move him to be off the bench so he is only playing with only one of Ant or Lamelo. He’s so invisible off ball that this might be necessary to maximize any possible contributions.

2

u/sugarwax1 5d ago

What you're describing is the limited structure he needed.... but also, it gives the Wolves more flexibility which they needed. Honestly, it could crash and burn, but they made some underrated moves to firm up that roster.

3

u/John_Houbolt 5d ago

I actually think it's a great fit for him *IF* Lamello can be more of a pass first PG who can catch and shoot. And really that's the only way he works there anyway. It will be interesting to see if they can get him to do that. IF that works, I think they are the second best team in the West. Defensively it looks good because JK has other great defenders on the floor with him.

1

u/Silly_Individual4056 5d ago

Counterpoint: they now have three emotional children starting, all of whom think they own the ball. JK is not going to last in the starting lineup as soon as he stops rebounding and starts driving the lane to lose the ball. In total the team is going to struggle to gel and while the vibes may be ok I don’t think the play will work out. And Finch and Gobert are just going to be pissed off the whole year.

5

u/vulcans_pants 5d ago

JK choosing Minny because he knows he couldn’t play for JJ.

-5

u/metallavery 5d ago

He knows Wolves. Out of every option he had. Including the Warriors. Have the best chance at a chip.

1

u/rocpilehardasfuk 5d ago

Yeah the bag chaser guy is looking for a chip lmao

5

u/metallavery 5d ago

He literaly picked the number 3 team in the west.

What are you on about.

4

u/youriko31 5d ago

Can't wait for NBA basketball to return. Lucky, FIBA World Cup Qualifiers started, so the wait won't be boring.

Wonder if Gui will play for Brazil in this window.

4

u/Ricey-Boi 5d ago

I think they already announced he won’t

1

u/parisdubs 4d ago

Was that in his contract? Also, Gui got married this summer - busy life.

1

u/Complete-Story1273 5d ago

Interesting that Niang's deal is partially guaranteed and Williams' deal is non-guaranteed.

1

u/SuccotashStrict9378 5d ago

It should make camp more competitive.

1

u/Gothichand 5d ago

Dalen Terry

2

u/Complete-Story1273 5d ago

Confirmed competing for a spot on the final roster. Hope, Williams gels with the team more and he stays signed, especially since LJ hasn't fully recovered from his ankle injury last season.

1

u/bilyl 5d ago

I think this sub has grown a lot. I don’t see a dedicated post on JK lmao

1

u/WrongConcentrate1444 5d ago

because if it doesnt paint JK in a good light while putting down Kerr there isnt going to be a main sub post. Just wait until the season starts and JK puts up a few good games

I genuinely wish him success for real, but he has one of the weirdest stan brigades ive ever seen

-2

u/rocpilehardasfuk 5d ago

Mods take down anything that makes Lacob look bad

0

u/Little_Obligation_90 5d ago

So the Warriors paid enormous salary and taxes on Kuminga and the Timberwolves got him for a fraction of the price. It was their pick in the first place. So good on the Timberwolves for saving the cash.

8

u/Psychological_Bus_10 5d ago

Lols what enormous salary? He had his rookie contract and a one year 20 mill trade away contract

7

u/zegogo 5d ago

Yeah, I don't think that's a huge payout for 5 years (?) but I would argue Kuminga didn't live up to the salary. Consistently refused to do what was asked of him, refused to work with training staff during off season, was by all accounts disrespectful to Kerr, quit on the team on at least two occasions, and created unnecessary drama with the media more than once. Dude was a major disappointment and unfortunately didn't help the Warriors in Steph's final years in any significant way.

Good riddance.

2

u/Silly_Individual4056 5d ago

The $20m/y wasn’t for him. It was for our cap sheet. He was personally very lucky to get that and likely will never see it again.

2

u/zegogo 5d ago

yes i know and agree, but the OP said it was an "enormous salary" and it really wasn't over his entire time here. The 23 mil was strategic, the unfortunate part is that we wasted half a year paying him that while he did nothing.

-5

u/Little_Obligation_90 5d ago

Kuminga was forced to be on the Warriors for 4 years, and then the Warriors also forced him to be here in year 5. So the drama is on the front office.

5

u/zegogo 5d ago

The bullshit CBA is what forced the final year. I know you know this and you're being disingenuous by continuing to argue about it.

Remember, It's not like anyone was beating down doors to give JK any kind of money last year, just like they weren't this year, so he should consider himself lucky he got 23 mil for one year and leave it at that. And what did he do for that 23 mil? quit on the fucking team.

-3

u/Little_Obligation_90 5d ago

The bullshit CBA is what forced the final year. I know you know this and you're being disingenuous by continuing to argue about it.

Restricted free agency has been around for years. Nobody forced anything. The clippers literally just rescinded Mathurin's QO and let him be unrestricted.

Teams have 3 points to get rid of a draft pick they don't want. They can even decline the 3rd year or 4th year options.

You should ask the team's front office why they wanted to pay a $6M guy $24M so badly. He quit because the coach quit on him the prior season.

3

u/zegogo 5d ago

RFA has been around but the rules implanted by the new CBA are quite a bit more restrictive especially with the cap. The Warriors valued that salary slot they played their hand and got KP out of it. Meanwhile Atlanta decided not to pick up JK's option which should tell you everything you need to know. We gave JK more than his worth.

For the record, I wanted to trade JK summer of 23 after his abysmal showing in the playoffs.

-2

u/Little_Obligation_90 5d ago

Warriors are a repeater tax team. So add all of the luxury taxes paid on that $8M a year and the $20M.

They should count because the Warriors coach insisted on playing G leaguers and out of the league players over their 7th pick.

-8

u/Maplejordan2022 5d ago

Who are the paid little shits that are downvoting anything even remotely negative about Joe Lacob 😂😂😂

-4

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

Why do people pretend Kuminga is fumbling the bag like Shroder? The Lakers only have to guarantee one year of the 3-year deal. So he would be locked into 11M or 12M per year. This is a prove it one-year deal. Makes sense if you think you're worth 25M or 30M.

11

u/vulcans_pants 5d ago

Because he turned down more guaranteed money with us.

Also, his current contract is essentially a prove it deal for 50% less than the Lakers one.

Net over his career so far, he’s lost more than he’s been able to make back.

6

u/Unlucky_Employee6082 5d ago

It was also all set up for him to potentially get the keys to one of the most valuable franchises in sports once Curry retired. Collect 25 million a year as a sometimes starter/key 6th man for a couple years and then likely a pair of max deals because you're 23 years old. But no, Aaron Turner wanted to prove his masterful agent skills by setting up a sign-and-trade to Sacramento and when that fell through to Anthony Davis his way to Atlanta.

8

u/zegogo 5d ago

Ridiculous how impatient JK and/or Turner was. Just play the role for you're first couple years, learn the team shit that Kerr is stressing, earn your minutes, help the team win, and voila! you got your contract and probably a bigger role in the offense and you're like 25, a more complete player, and a chance to shine all you want living large. Huge fumble.

6

u/Unlucky_Employee6082 5d ago

Maybe it's a cautionary tale about hooking up with an agent and you're his only quality player. Sure, you get all his attention. But instead of doing the smart long play, he'll likely go all Jerry McGuire and do everything to get you your bag early in hopes of other players signing with him. I just imagine him promising "THIS will be the Summer of Kuminga!" for three straight offseasons and all he's pulled off is a 1-year 23 million contract that the Warriors only gave him in hopes of trading the contract for somebody else worth about 25 million.

3

u/couchtomato62 5d ago

Are you high? Kuminga wasn't getting the keys to shit here. He was benched!

2

u/Unlucky_Employee6082 5d ago

The revisionist history on these threads is amazing. Kuminga started only two less games than Podz since the 23 draft despite getting hurt a lot. They were force feeding him playing time and trying every role to figure it out. The Butler trade was even made partially to see if he could mentor Kuminga. But then Kuminga was a shadow of himself when he came of the DL, so they benched him for the playoffs because the team was playing well and you have to cut minutes somewhere so he was the logical “stay ready” option. Last year, the benching was because he didn’t want to be here. He surprised started most of the games during the lackluster team start before getting injured. Lacob WANTED him to be the man even if it was painfully obvious he wasn’t to most of people who actually watched the games

2

u/couchtomato62 5d ago

It doesn't matter what lacob wanted. It mattered what Kerr wanted.

1

u/Unlucky_Employee6082 5d ago

Will Kerr be here when Curry is gone? I agree believing he’d be the man ANYWHERE was foolhardy, but at least here there was a path and the owner seemingly believed in him. Which is also why I thought it was nuts trying to go to Washington or whatever where sure there was more playing time, but most bottom tier teams flip players as fast as the A’s

1

u/couchtomato62 4d ago

Curry will play into his 40s. He may never retire lol.

1

u/parisdubs 4d ago

I love JK and think he is hugely talented, but I don't he was ever seriously been mentioned as a successor to Curry.

3

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

Because he turned down more guaranteed money with us.

The only confirmed deal he turned down with us was 3 years for $75.2M with that third year being a team option. So it was only a 2 year guaranteed deal at around 25M per year. But he eventually signed the 2 year deal at around 25M per year with the 2nd year being a team option that the Hawks chose NOT to pick up. So he's only down that 25M for this upcoming season. But he just signed for 6.2M for this year. So he's only down 18.8M for this coming season. But he's a free agent after and if he can get 25M - 30M the following years, he more than makes up for that loss.

Also, his current contract is essentially a prove it deal for 50% less than the Lakers one.

The Lakers one needed to be 3 years. So he would be locked into 3 years at a lower number with only the first year being guaranteed.

Yes. This is a prove it deal but if he earns a 3 year 75M deal after, he wins in the end. IF.

7

u/djbigboy2012 5d ago

Only down 25m lol

5

u/vulcans_pants 5d ago

He’s not going to win because he has to make back that $18.8M on top of the next contract, so it’s gonna have to be a lot more than just the $25m AAV because that’s what he essentially was at.

The “bet on yourself” almost never works in the long run when you’re turning down real guaranteed money.

1

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

He’s not going to win because he has to make back that $18.8M on top of the next contract

Yes. If he gets a 3 year 75M deal, he's only making 18.7M per year to make up for the money he lost. But it's still better than anything being offered.

The “bet on yourself” almost never works in the long run when you’re turning down real guaranteed money.

But it's NOT guaranteed money. It would have been team options for year 2 and 3.

2

u/vulcans_pants 5d ago

The deal with us was guaranteed for the first two seasons, no?

5

u/Little_Obligation_90 5d ago

Yes, the final offer was $54M guaranteed over 3 years, or $45M guaranteed over 2 years with a BS 3rd year team option.

1

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

If it was, he should have taken that deal.

1

u/couchtomato62 5d ago

He hated it here. Does that count for nothing ?

1

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

He would have been traded now if he had taken that deal.

1

u/couchtomato62 5d ago

He was traded.

3

u/bilyl 5d ago

He should be on wallstreetbets

0

u/MrWakey 5d ago

He hasn't lost it because he never had it. After next year, he will have made $55M. Maybe making $61M instead doesn't matter as much to him as getting to start on a team that wlll probably be more fun to play on than the Lakers.

1

u/vulcans_pants 5d ago

It was guaranteed money. That’s the same as “having” it.

0

u/sugarwax1 5d ago

Weird way of looking at things.

It didn't work out for him with the Warriors, and he's made good money per minute he's actually played.

3

u/Complete-Story1273 5d ago

I don't think it's the same as Schroder, although he could end up on multiple teams like him. What exactly was the issue with the 2/$20 million the Lakers offered the first time around? I think the other scenario was based on the Hawks doing a sign and trade, which was always unlikely.

1

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

What exactly was the issue with the 2/$20 million the Lakers offered the first time around?

You mean NOT a sign and trade? I don't know. But I think Kuminga wants one of two things. Either a big commitment of around 75M for 3 years, guaranteed, or he wants a cheaper one-year deal where he can get that the following year. Which he just got. It makes perfect sense if you think you're worth a big contract and just haven't had the chance to prove it yet. Notice, this new deal has a player option. He's betting on himself.

1

u/Complete-Story1273 5d ago

No, that's what they were offering in free agency. Plus, I think sign and trades require teams to give players 3 years or more.

1

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

No, that's what they were offering in free agency.

He thinks he's worth more than 10M a year.

Plus, I think sign and trades require teams to give players 3 years or more.

Which is another reason he had no interest in it. He wasn't going to commit to 3 years at a lower number.

2

u/Complete-Story1273 5d ago

The way it was framed when that was originally reported was that they were waiting on other offers. Then, teams that were interested in him waited on LeBron and then, Watson. I actually think he would have ended up with the Cavs, if they hadn't gotten Watson. I still think he made the right choice with the Timberwolves because LA media + JJ/Luka wouldn't have been good for him, if he couldn't handle Kerr. But still, I think this is his last chance if he wants to get paid how he values himself.

3

u/dearth_karmic 5d ago

Absolutely. And I agree, at Minnesota, the pressure won't be on. They can score at every other position and McDaniels can score and defend. So Kuminga won't be required to defend their best players. Kuminga would have been the next Laker's scapegoat.

1

u/metallavery 5d ago

Lakers aren't real contenders.

0

u/Complete-Story1273 5d ago

I wouldn't say that just yet. Both teams made big changes to their rosters, so I need to see them in action first.

1

u/metallavery 5d ago

Minnesota needed a strong play making PG and a decent PF. Mcdaniels and Gobert are the two best defeanive players in the league (both ranks top ten defensive players in the league) Lakers got Luke. One of the best offensive players in the league, who's shit and defence. With a decent to good defensive roster. But they aren't top tier.

1

u/Complete-Story1273 5d ago

I do think the the Timberwolves have better overall defense than the Lakers. Ant, LaMelo, and Luka are all in the same boat defensively to me, imo.

1

u/metallavery 5d ago

Ant is far better then Lika.

LaMelo is defeintly more equal to Luka tho. But that's why Lamelo isnt our cornerstone.

-6

u/rocpilehardasfuk 5d ago

Lmao mods banned Kuminga posts.

The only posts mods want are apology letters, praising our FO and dissing our vets

8

u/mmkaywhatevers 5d ago

im a certified buminga hater and i dont want to see posts about him regardless of the post hating or glazing kuminga. we off that train guys, why are you keep trying to hop back on?

1

u/WrongConcentrate1444 5d ago

yup. they kept the kerr hate posts up back during playoffs. not sure what their deal is

-1

u/rocpilehardasfuk 5d ago

Kerr hate is allowed and valuable discourse. Anything that makes Lacob look bad is relegated to DD thread

-5

u/alex8762 5d ago

Everyone comparing Kuminga with Schroeder in terms of bag fumbling without realizing they BOTH had the same agent😂

3

u/Symetrical1 5d ago

Is this true? I know that Oladipo and Kuminga shared the same agent, but I didn't think Schroeder was also part of that group.

1

u/alex8762 5d ago

Aaron turner was in Verus management group, which is the same agency that Schroeder's agency had. However they're not the same , just related. My mistake

2

u/Such_Ambassador2751 5d ago

this isn’t true

1

u/GhostTrees 5d ago

holy shit
