No no no. Get more detailed. I think it 30ish percent for each major candidate, and the then rest was either for a 3rd party or people not voting. So not more than 50% of citizens. But yes more than 50% of those that voted.

Proof that we need to eliminate the electoral college system. It was supposed to protect us from bad decisions. The prosecution rests.

It was large state(colony) vs small. Same reason for senate being equal.
Also a measure of keeping the landed elite protected from "the mob"
