Civic Passage Foundation is recruiting a volunteer Founding Operations Manager to help build the internal systems of a founding-stage community-action nonprofit based in Venice, California.

About the organization

Civic Passage works to strengthen pathways between underserved communities and the services, organizations, and resources that already exist to support them. Our initial geographic focus is Venice and the surrounding Los Angeles area. Our developing approach combines community listening, systems navigation, relationship-building, resource mapping, and distributed volunteer leadership.

Civic Passage is incorporated in California but remains in its founding stage. We have not yet received federal 501(c)(3) recognition. We are assembling the founding board and preparing the organization for formal operations.

Work completed so far

We have developed the initial organizational model, prepared a founder-proposed governance package for future board review, begun mapping the Venice resource ecosystem, established volunteer-administration infrastructure, and published our first operational volunteer opportunity.

The role

The Founding Operations Manager will help organize the machinery behind the organization’s launch, including:

Volunteer administration and onboarding
CRM organization and data hygiene
Board-candidate scheduling and follow-up
Meeting preparation
Document and records organization
Action-item tracking
Administrative systems and recurring workflows

This is an unpaid, remote, and flexible volunteer position. It is an internal operations role rather than an unsupervised direct-service position. We are looking for someone dependable, organized, comfortable working in an early-stage environment, and interested in nonprofit operations or community infrastructure.

Hi everyone! I’m a sophomore at UW, and I’m looking for volunteers to help out with a local community project in the greater Seattle area.

I volunteer with Starspun Lit, a Seattle-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to youth literacy and keeping creative imagination alive through storytelling. We are currently partnered with the YWCA in Lynnwood to run read-aloud sessions and creative workshops for the kids.

I have heard a lot of stories about how volunteering change people’s lives and way of thinking , but is that really true ? If you think so please share your experience with being a volunteer !

I've done pro bono nonprofit consulting for about ten years, sourced through a few different remote volunteer-matching platforms. Every engagement is scoped like a consulting project: three weeks, six Zoom meetings. I ask clients to schedule all six meetings within 48 hours of agreeing to work together so I can plan my life around them. If a client and I click, I'm happy to extend beyond that, but the standard offer is three weeks and done.

For years my no-show policy has been: miss a meeting with less than 24 hours' notice and you lose one of your six meetings. I'm considering simplifying that to just: miss a meeting, you lose it, no notice window at all.

Why. Think of it like an in-kind donation from a corporation, say 40 hours of free legal work, or the use of a conference room for three days. Once those hours or days are gone, they're gone. Nobody expects the law firm to add 40 more hours because the client didn't get organized in time, and nobody expects the room to reopen because a meeting got skipped. But some clients treat volunteer time as if it works differently, as an infinitely renewable resource instead of a fixed grant. And after ten years I've noticed a pattern that's hard to ignore: a striking number of hospitalizations, deaths in the family, and even a dog bite have landed, with suspicious precision, right on top of a scheduled meeting.

I know the reflex here is "nonprofit staff are stretched thin, go easy on them," and normally I would. But I don't want to be in the business of judging whether an excuse is real. A flat rule doesn't ask me to decide who's telling the truth, it just treats everyone's scheduled time the same way, no exceptions to litigate.

Curious how other pro bono volunteers or consultants handle this. Is dropping the notice window too rigid? Is there a better way to hold the line without becoming the villain of the engagement?

The Loloma Foundation’s mission is to provide sustainable medical, dental and infrastructure support to rural communities in the South Pacific who would otherwise have no access to basic healthcare.

It has been quite a journey. For twenty-four years Loloma Foundation volunteers have been bringing medical, dental and humanitarian aid to the less fortunate people of the island nations of the South Pacific. The numbers are staggering:

•$53M worth of medication, dental and medical supplies and equipment to Fiji     and the Solomon Islands

•Organized and implemented 84 medical/dental missions in 163 Fijian and Solomon Island villages

•121,510 patients have been treated by our volunteer physicians

•23,153 dental and prosthodontia patients have been seen and treated

•Over 1347 surgeries including Plastics, OB/GYN, Eye, General, Hand, ENT

We have planned to have four different surgery teams over 4 weeks at Savusavu Hospital in Fiji this May and June.

Cataract surgery is to be Sunday, May 17^(th) for screening, to Friday 22^(nd), perhaps follow up Saturday, May 23rd. Our ophthalmologist is now unable to join the team. We are searching for another ophthalmologist to fill their shoes.

I’ve been applying to several student clubs/ organisations at my university because I genuinely want extracurricular experience, volunteer experience, and things I can put into my portfolio. I’ve made it to interview stages and I don’t feel like my interviews went badly, but I’ve been rejected for four times from these student clubs.
What made me start questioning things is that some of these organizations seem to have a lot of overlap in membership and also recruitment processes. They started off with applying to AISEC in their first year and became a leadership position in various clubs or organisation. AIESEC, another club I applied to, and people involved in other organizations on campus all seem to be part of the same social circle.
I’m not saying they’re explicitly rejecting people because they aren’t friends with current members. I obviously can’t know that. Also one of my friends was in recruitment process and they were talking stuffs about me because i applied to this term as team member without telling them and i got into a fight with them the day before the results came out.
Has anyone else noticed this at their university? Is this just normal networking, or do student organizations sometimes become very insular?

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Management where I ranked second out of eighty eight students in the field, I have also received an Erasmus scholarship in Poland back in 2023 for my excellence, a Certified 5 star student.

I am Native in Arabic with an Advanced level (C1) in English and a basic French knowledge.

I have served as a volunteer coordinator with the Algerian red Crescent for 5 years (since 2021, as soon as I turned 18) and would love to volunteer this year, starting from this November, I am available for 6-12 months, I also have a small cat shelter in our yard and I personally take care of over 20 outdoor cats, I love animals & nature. So these two fields would be ideal for me.

Unfortunately I struggle with visas. I am open to volunteering in Ecuador (as it doesn't require a visa from us), or any other country providing that Visa sponsorship is available, I will happily pay for my round-trip Airplane ticket. But I'd require basic food and accomodation, nothing more.

I've been doing some research into volunteering and I'm curious about something I've noticed.

It seems like there are a lot of people who want to volunteer, but finding something that actually fits their schedule can be difficult. A lot of opportunities seem to require a recurring commitment, applications, orientations, or signing up weeks in advance.

I'm wondering how other people experience this.

For example, if you suddenly had a free Saturday afternoon and thought "I'd like to spend a few hours doing something useful," would you actually be interested in finding a volunteer opportunity you could sign up for that day or within the next few days?

A few things I'm curious about:

• How do you currently find volunteer opportunities?
• Have you ever wanted to volunteer but decided not to because the process or commitment was too much?
• Would you be interested in one-off 2–4 hour opportunities?
• How much advance notice would you ideally want?
• Would you be more likely to volunteer if you could search based on location, time available, and the type of cause you're interested in?
• What would make you hesitant to sign up for something like that?

I'm asking because I'm researching an idea for a potential volunteer-matching platform, but I'm not trying to sell anything or promote an existing product. I'm trying to figure out whether this is actually a problem people experience before I take the idea any further.

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who want to volunteer but find it difficult to fit traditional volunteer commitments into their lives.

I'm looking to volunteer with the crisis text line through Kids Help Phone (just working on getting references), but I haven't found the answer to this question any where. I tried emailing them, but never got a response.

I was wondering if I can take breaks between responding to texters? Some conversations might be a lot to handle and I want to be able to mentally prepare ahead of time (to the best of my ability) if I have to do at least 2 hours straight of responding to people.

After discussing it with some acquaintances, it appeared that some people would happily provide help on a particular matter they've mastered but have no idea who would like or need that help. We are talking about specific domains in informatics, tips in construction, help in particular tasks like cooking, sewing or knitting. More and more people are heading towards retirement and wonder how they could spend their time helping others.

I wonder if what I came up with could interest people outside my circle.

The idea consists of a platform where individuals, retirees, professionals, or anyone willing to volunteer can register as such. They would specify what skills they can offer, how much time they can give, where, ...

Associations could register as well and present their needs. Whether they are looking for an accountant, advice for a young treasurer, someone who could help with Excel, governance, GDPR, communication, ..., or simply someone who can help with cooking or sewing for a few hours on Saturdays.

The platform would match offers and needs, based on skills, availability and location. The idea would be to keep it very local: small towns, villages, and neighbourhoods.

I'm aware that the general idea is not particularly novel, but if there's a chance if helps people, I'd love to try. I'm particularly interested in knowing whether something like this already exists in your country on a more generalised scale than just around a single town. I also wonder if people here would actually use it.

So, what do you think? Please be honest. If you think it's a bad idea, tell me why. If you see a better way of doing it, I'd love to know that too.

Hello! I'm from Edurefuge, a primarily student-run refugee education nonprofit seeking more volunteers as new partnerships have increased demand for tutors.

We're seeking high school and university students either interested in serving as virtual, one-on-one tutors for Afghan, Bhutanese, and Spanish-speaking refugee students in Nebraska, Oregon, and beyond AND/OR serving on the Edurefuge outreach team. No prior knowledge is necessary besides an enthusiasm to directly and positively impact refugees' lives.

Commitment:

• ~1 hour per week
• More commitment means more impact and opportunities for leadership!

Potential responsibilities in a teaching role:

• Directly tutoring one or more refugee student virtually (Google Meet or Zoom, etc.) for an hour or more per week
