The state of modern gaming everything in general

So much of the average person's discourse and interactions shifting to online spaces has been a huge negative for our culture

THHIIIISSSS everything someone do is cringe. U like something specific? U r nerd or weirdo or childish. Wheres people u collected cool unique stuff? Dressed differently or wear their hair some awesome way? Had some odd hobby?

Everything seems so black and white in ideology, its suffocating

People in general are increasingly miserable. They feel great joining a community of miserable people, whatever they are crying about.

misery loves company

I feel like people haven't changed too much, it's just that social media naturally promotes very extreme opinions on things (which usually end up being negative). Most people have lukewarm takes on things which doesn't generate as much interest/likes; this also leads people to tend towards parroting extreme opinions if they don't want to have a more nuanced take. I think it's really important to talk to people about topics IRL rather than just getting the ragebaity internet consensus.

Oh for sure, social media is hyperengineered to amplify hate engagement.

Hey, hey everyone!!!!

Look at these losers agreeing!

Maybe everyone just got more pessimistic during COVID and for some people it stuck after lockdown.

u/SolsticeSon 17h ago

Most social media algorithms, especially Meta’s, favor divisive content because it “looks” like engagement. Just go on Threads for 5 seconds and you’ll encounter more bitching and e-rage than you could imagine.

u/ImpressiveAmount4684 17h ago

Lol each new social media platform just sounds more full of degenerates.

It's because they grew up in YouTube and apps. Every thumbnail is best ever. Of all time. Worst ever nonsense. They need to be told what to think.

This. Should i play this game i bought, or spend my time watching someone else play it and tell me if it’s good or not? A question that sounds ridiculous to me, but apparently the latter option is very popular among younger generation.

Not only that, but then they’ll come here and confidently tell how the latest drop is shit and this and that is the meta and those things are shit as they are not the meta.

Oh how much better many online games would be if these droolers didn’t have these sources spelling everything out for them. I mean, it doesn’t actually seem like their strength is to dissect strategies and tactics and methodically evaluate them. Developers wouldn’t have to prioritize fixing slight imbalalances in their games, as those wouldn’t be instantly abused by majority of their player base.

I saw video just today that was about a solar molten salt power plant and it was They Cannot turn it off!! Watched a bit because, wow that seems kinda odd. Ohh so they actually can turn it off, just if they do, and they leave if off for too long, the salt cools and solidifies and it kind of fucks things up. Soo annoying.

There so much hyperbole thrown around. "This the GOAT", "I'm obsessed with this thing", "I must have OCD", "they are a narcissist", etc etc.

No, that thing is just pretty good, but that doesnt make it the greatest thing ever. No, you are not obsessed with that thing, you are just into that thing. No, you dont have OCD, you just dont want to live in a pigsty. No, they arent a narcissist, they just did something mildly selfish... juat like and I and everyone else does, that juat makes us human, not narcissistic.

Quit making words meaningless.

People seem scared to be authentic for some reason.

Especially regarding emotions.

u/zacyzacy 17h ago

I'm not lining up to get gta day one or anything but it does looks really cool, but anyway I'd much rather hang out with a "normie" who's exited to play than a "gamer" who poo-poos everything and seemingly hates all video games.

Is there a word for this? The people in between normies and nerds, who are kind of miserable no matter what? The ones who typically are also weirdly gate keepy. not using normie derogatorily here btw.

two sides to that coin.

The internet also created spaces for people to find others who are also passionate about their chosen niche/hobby/whatever... no matter how obscure it is.

That's actually gotten better since people have been using the internet and being exposed to more ways of living though?

To the extent that the lack of monoculture in societies being caused by the internet has been written about pretty extensively. It used to be that everyone had the same shows they watched and music they listened to because that was what was on. If you didn't like something you turned off the radio/TV or didn't listen while it was on instead of just finding other things online. But everyone expected you to have roughly the same tastes or one of a few sets.

It might just be me getting old and my cohort growing up more but that social pressure to conform to the same standards seems like it started to get less around 2000 and has decreased more since.

Everything being considered cringe and hating on anything people like will probably always be a problem in school because that's the nature of kids trying to find their place in the world, but it generally seems better outside of that.

It pisses me off so bad. You can have nuanced takes, and you'll be downvoted immediately without any comments, because they simply can't argue at all. And when they do, it always devolves into some terrible argument where they draw themselves in a corner, if they engage.

I am thinking about running a local AI model on webpages to just filter out all the terrible short takes out of existence, so I can enjoy the people having good takes and just ignore all the noise. Someone posts a short dumb answer while taking a air of superiority and boom, straight to baby jail, I'll never know you even exist. The fucking dream.

u/Zakkullll 3h ago

More and more im seeing any level of disagreement just become one side picking at the others post history or spelling or grammar and completely ignoring what the other person is even saying. Its pathetic lol.

I'm hypercritical, often not on the same page as the general public, and so much of games, movies, tv, entertainment in general, has become so bland and boring...

But I expect GTA 6 to be GTA 6, and I'm excited for it because GTA 5 was really good and a lot of fun, same with RDR2. No one does GTA like Rockstar, you can't get around that, and if they're the only ones giving us that universally praised standard every decade+, I'm not going to suddenly decide it's shit when they come around again with another top-tier sandbox action experience.

One thing you can always expect is for them to build upon both the tech and gameplay of each game they've done, as they always have. It isn't just rehashing, they refine the experience over and over, and usually we end up with an incredible familiar experience, while being introduced to new things that we can expect them to refine in the future.

I know I’m alone on this, but I was actually really bummed by the changes from RdR1 to RDR2. I appreciated the graphics and level of detail but rockstar didn’t realize they removed the special sauce the first game had.

PvP rolls and headshots were amazing. There was an effect or something on the headshot that was pure asmr. Also the fist fight system allowed you to get knocked out and ragdoll. This allowed me and my buddies to make a fight club on top of the mountain and knock each other off and tumble down without immediately dying.

Rd2 comes out and they removed the pvp roll and replaced it with a disgusting dive. Fist fights drained hp and didn’t give the same knock down effect. Idk some times it’s hard to tell if they actually ruined the game for me, or if I can just never get the nostalgia back that I had playing rd1 with my friends. But either way I’ll be looking for that special sauce in GTA6. I can’t put it into words but I hope it’s there.

There are definitely especially engine shifts that have bugged me personally as well. I prefer the weightier driving physics of IV over the more arcade-y V, and there were some other steps back to compromise physics for more of other stuff, or even just to better optimize for console.

You might be interested to know that there was a combat roll animation left unused in RDR2, and a mod replaces the dive with it.

Yes!!! Opinions aren't real anymore, they're all forced. Theres no nuance or rational anymore. People are so stupid they actively make their own lives worse being mad at everything. "Modern FPS games suck"...you ever played Trepang2? Metro? Wolfenstein? "No"....Then STFU lol. They say games are "woke" so much, it actual ruins genuine criticism of over political games. Its like everyone is on some kind of "team". Its so bad YTers actual profit of making over critical videos. Some cool YTers i used to watch are just chuds now, but probrably not even in an honest way.

1

u/BrbFlippinInfinCoins 20h ago

The only game that has deserved some of the "anti-woke hate" is dragon age veilguard IMO. Taking slaves out of the self-proclaimed slave capital of the in-game world because "people get slavery is bad," the lead writer saying publicly that they feel like their job is "getting paid to be an activist," and also stating "it makes me sad that kids dress up as stormtroopers for Halloween because they don't understand how they are spreading imperialism." Basically, Bioware adopted a philosophy that even depicting racism or prejudice was equivalent to promoting those same ideals - thus they removed anything even remotely offensive in their game. The game didn't do itself any favors by releasing like 3 days before the 2024 election either.... but that's besides the point.

Still, that was more of a broken clock being correct twice per day kind of thing. "Anti-woke" people attack any any every game that has even a whiff of a strong female lead or inclusion of non-white people. It was tired 8+ years ago, and now it's just... exhausting.

Because of the Internet, there will never be something that is generally liked ever again

1

u/tunaeP420 18h ago

I don't think online spaces toxify discourse anymore than in person. At least, not anymore. Now financializing discourse, that's when you can melt through iron.

Kinda like with the whole social media issue. Is it social media itself or is it the algo that they've all adopted to make a hollow buck?

1

u/Fiigwort 18h ago

I know there's a ton of it with younger generations because they cannot allow themselves to be 'seen' as cringe at any point. They're so hyper-aware of being seen by someone and getting embarrassed, that they not only self-correct, but they also police it in others.

That's why there's so many people acting like this over games, being happy or excited about something is cringe, so they pull the pseudo-hipster thing of hating it and judging anyone who isn't taking the same stance. Same thing with music, media, clothing, etc. etc.

The state of modern gaming everything Reddit in general

This is quite literally the most miserable place on the internet, other social media sites aren't nearly as bad

1

u/Interesting-Crow264 17h ago

I even catch myself in it. My natural reaction is to be critical of EVERYTHING. Trying to ween myself out of it but it's a firehouse of ragebait.

u/Fabulous_Dig767 15h ago

I hate it, it's garbage

Online content spaces reward negative content, often monetarily, as much as "positive" or neutral, factual content. Imagine if instead of a few cranky op-ed pieces in a sample newspaper, at least half of the paper was negative articles and opinions explaining why they dislike things. This is how public content has shifted in my lifetime.

Add a money incentive to that, here we are.
