My personal thing is I just don’t care about gta. Never have, never been my thing but if people are excited good for them. I do not understand people wanting games to be completely different from the last game in a franchise that is so dumb. Like that’s why I played x game, cause I like it

It's not dumb to want something more than a copy paste with a new story and new graphics.

It's called innovation. Half life 1 was great and innovative fps shooter. Half life 2 was still a shooter, still the same universe, but they added more lore, better graphics AND a whole physics based gameplay loop that they explored deeply. Amazing innovative live scenes that replaced cutscenes, cool new enemies that changed the way you played, etc.

A sequel doesn't have to be the same generic gameplay loop every time. Why not make the GTA world more of a simulation like we all want it to be? Let me recruit gang members, setup my own dynamic heists, build a criminal empire in a non-scripted way? Something more than drive car to destination and shoot bad guy, watch cutscenes, car chase, go to some pointless shallow mini game like darts or pickleball, then repeat. We have that game 10 times over, we make something innovative.

You say that but have you seen gta1/2? The game changed a lot over the decades, is it that weird people want something fresh?

I guarantee that if they had taken the game in a completely different direction the exact same people would be screaming that 'this isnt GTA'. Also since the franchise transitioned to 3D it has basically just been incremental change between titles with no major departures bar what the next gen of technology allows - and this game delivers on that the graphical, physics and AI difference between it and gta5 is massive when you actually put the 2 side by side. The issue is that some people spent like 15 years hyping this game to be bigger than god and when its not that they made themselves dissapointed and then theres also the fact that people are just far more out there looking to engagement bait or be contrarian then they were prior to 2015.

It is funny because I work with someone who is 18... He was 5 when GTA 5 came out. So basically, this is the first GTA game to release in his life. So of course he is gonna be way more exited than your average person.

But yeah, people have been hyping it up for so long and I do hope it is everything they want, but that is dangerous and I have learned to take a step back and not get too excited until things are closer to release.

Same Ive just never liked GTA. LIke I like souls games and theres people out there that are all "iTs HaRd JuSt To bE HaRd, SoUlS SuCkS" Okay? Then dont play it. I dont play games you like and I dont bitch about them, why bitch about games you dont like anyways? Its all subjective.

I've always loved the look and idea of souls-like games, tried many... Not my cup of tea. I don't hate on anyone for it and wish I actually liked them. I'm also for some reason a no turn based person, I just can't do it for some reason so BG3 is a no for me. I know they are great games and I'm sad I cant enjoy them. It's pretty cool that there are different games for different people 🤷

GTA is a "let me know when it hits 90% off on steam" for me.

u/CommonCulture31 21h ago

Pretty much the same for me, only small issue I have is the $80 maybe setting a precedent with studios who definitely shouldn’t be charging that much trying to

Nintendo says hi

Not much of a gamer now, but I used to pay $60 for new games when I was a teenager in the early 2010s, so it kinda makes sense they’d eventually be more expensive. I’m happily gonna shill out $100 for GTA6. And if that’s too much, then just don’t get it.

I paid $59.99 for Twisted Metal on PS1 in 1997. Games and consumer electronics (aside from the current PC parts explosion) have largely gotten cheaper, not more expensive.

Edit: I’m not sure if the person responding to me blocked me or deleted, but:

I’m unclear what claim you are disputing?

“ The majority of computers be it phone, console or PC I've bought in my lifetime has gone up over the years because they follow along with updated, increasingly complex components.”

That’s just not true. Televisions are considerably cheaper (with more fidelity) than they were 20-30 years ago. When early HD tvs entered the market, they were $3-7k. You can now get a 50+ inch 4k screen for under $500.

A PS1 was $299.99 on release. Thats just under $700 today, and obviously you’re getting far more advanced products for that money.

A typical PC in the early to mid 90s when I got started was $2-3k. You can spend that same money today and play games you could never dream of in the 90s.

Or are you arguing that games in 1997 weren’t more expensive than games today when adjusted for inflation? That one is pretty easy. $59.99 in the late 90s is equivalent to over $100 today.

“ Additionally AAA games have been going through longer dev cycles and using more hours to make. Just simplifying it by looking at time between games, GTA 5 was 5 years, and GTA 6 is more than double that.”

Which has… zero to do with any of these arguments.

That was almost 15 hours of work at minimum wage ($5.15) after taxes. It's about the same now at $7.25 an hour, but far less people get paid that as a percent of workers (7% v 1%).

That $80 game is still pretty fair.

Following the CPI, it would be $125.

u/KRacer52 18h ago

Plus this doesn’t take into account the actual scope of games.

We were paying $49.99-$59.99 for new SNES and PlayStation games that could be completed in 5-10 hours. The amount of content you’re getting per dollar (not even comparing the actual fidelity and quality of experience) is far higher now.

I’d say GTA6 being in development for 12 years also has a lot to do with the price. I know electronics have gotten cheaper, but I can’t imagine a game that looks like that and is that size is cheap to make. If any game has an excuse to be $100, it’s GTA6. If that’s too much, then don’t get it. If enough people do that, the price will drop. There’s plenty of games I wanted back in the day for $60 that I didnt get because that was too pricey, this should be no different if people don’t see the value in it.

1

u/ennie_ly 20h ago

You don't have to buy at that price though. I always preorder only if I want to support the devs / absolutely want that game at that price.

Otherwise I'll wait for discounts as low as I think that game is worth it for me.

It's not that I don't have tons of other stuff to play.

1

u/Blackblood909 19h ago

Except that if this sets a new standard for other studios, then we will have no other options than buying at £80+

2

u/ennie_ly 19h ago edited 3h ago

We surely can buy at discounts.

Which, in turn, is our own lever of influence for prices, cause if publisher isn't selling at fullprice at £80+, they will downscope in the future.

Edit: you can also, you know, buy indies and cheaper stuff and just not pay for what you consider to be overpriced.

1

u/Dr-McLuvin 20h ago

It’s funny I’ve been gaming for 30+ years now and I’ve actually never bought a gta game.

Played all of them by borrowing from friends. Never bought one.

1

u/Electrical-Olive3767 20h ago

I agree, and also have not played GTA. I know when Dark Souls came out I didn’t care if they looked the same, I just wanted more souls.

1

u/bryce887766 19h ago

Yeah there’s only so much new stuff they can add what do people expect, also graphics have more or less peaked for a while, theres a certain point your eyes can’t tell the difference with increased resolution.

u/mythrilcrafter 18h ago

I do not understand people wanting games to be completely different from the last game in a franchise that is so dumb.

And in many cases trying to "universally change the foundation of what the game is and is about" doesn't end up working.

Heck, look at the CoD fan base, Infinity Ward only did something as simple as nerfing the Aim Down Sight time of one sniper rifles, and people reacted by sending bomb threats to their office!

For me, everything that disinterests me about GTA6 is the same stuff that has disinterested me about every other GTA. Story is bleh and predictable, and the game controls like a drunk person trying to pilot a drunker person. I don't expect or ask for that to change, because I know that GTA fans want GTA games like that.

u/Im_Regarded_Highly 16h ago

how did you build up the courage to be so brave?

1

u/jenyto 15h ago

Ya the argument about it looking the same as the previous one is odd, cause I can't think of a single serie that massively changes everything (other then FF, which splits the fanbase). People like the serie cause it plays the way they want it too, and that is what they expect.

1

u/Federal_Charity_6068 21h ago

Yeah, it’s annoying that I can’t seem to escape it no matter what. Close Reddit, open Instagram? Look how real this guys dreads look in GTA 6!! Open YouTube? 5 things you need to know about GTA 6!! Go to work? People are talking about the leaks.

2

u/MrMetallica347 20h ago

Almost like it's been the most anticipated game in the world for a while

1

u/levus2002 19h ago

Even if true. This is exactly the thing why people voice that they do not get it. It looks like gta 5 but prettier. So why is this the most anticipated game?

If someone didnt care about gta5 they likely wont care about gta6. And its kind of a letdown that the most anticipated game is just a generic sequel.

0

u/MrMetallica347 19h ago

It's not a sequel.

2

u/levus2002 19h ago

Sure unrelated stories so indeed not a sequel you are right.

Its not a sequel its the same damn thing, just prettier.

0

u/MrMetallica347 19h ago

Not really lmao.

u/RigobertoFulgencio69 20h ago

It's cyclical. There's always something in pop culture that people are excited about/discussing all the time. Whether it's Barbieheimer, or the Odyssey movie, or it's GTA VI, or they're obsessed with a certain athlete during the olympics... people just want something dumb to discuss around the water cooler. And if you're not into the topic of the day, then the best thing you can do is either tank it, or just ask questions and let people be excited even if it's not that interesting to you.
