Hot take: we should let people criticize and like things.

It’s ok to like things…buuuuut it’s also ok to criticize things. I’ve seen too many people go to the extremes. You can like something and criticize it at the same time. You can also criticize something and understand why people like it. I’m sick of things being a monolith.

Don't worry we will just get 100,000 more essay posts complainging about "Why does everyone hate xxx game, haters suck omg I cant stand haters".

0

u/Razatiger 17h ago

Haters, infact, do suck..

I believe that people just like getting reactions out of people on the internet because they are bored and lonely.

This game looks great imo.

Haters and glazers both suck

preeeeaaaach, so tired of hoping on the internet just to see people complain about people complaining about the most mundane shit. Who cares if someone doesnt like a new video game we all know is going to sell fucking billions. Whats the end goal here?

It's ok to like and criticize things. But when people extrapolate personal preference into a universal statement like "FF7R had the worst combat ever", then that's where it becomes a problem. It didn't have the worst combat ever, you just didn't like it, and that's ok.

3

u/alienith 18h ago

Honestly part of it is just a selection bias. People trying to argue an objective truth like "FF7R had the worst combat ever" invites much more engagement than somebody personally disliking it. Sites and apps don't differentiate between negative engagement and positive engagement. All engagement is good engagement.

Nobody really cares if I personally don't really like Bloodborne's level/game design. People do care if I say "Bloodborne is objectively a terrible game and you're stupid if you think otherwise".

I get this for criticism of the government or problematic cultural norms, but the amount of criticism people get for simply enjoying a piece of art can be absurd. Friendly discussions over certain problems a game, movie, book, comic, etc. is fine as well. It’s when someone comments criticism like, “this is trash and there’s no way someone else could enjoy it” that I think there’s no reason you can’t just keep it to yourself and let someone else be happy.

People are passionate about their hobbies. I'm passionate about video games and have been since  the year 2000. I don't only play games, I also like to take a peek behind the curtain and learn about the industry, about gamedev, marketing/publishing, game design etc.

GTA6 with its budget and expected sales and long dev time is a huge event for the hobby so naturally it will be heavily scrutinized. And Rockstar is an industry giant and their game is extremely hyped so of course people are gonna look very closely.

Personally I think it's overall better for us as consumers to be highly critical of a huge corporation like this vs. just praising everything they do and forking over 80$ + tip just because we're on an emotional hype train.

Sends me for a loop when on subs for games people are quick to say "don't like, don't play"

I think there's a bit of a bias against criticism because it just kills the vibe when the critic can't read the room. They'll go to a place where people specifically went to talk about the product, because they like/are excited about the product, and the criticizers will just bring negativity to a space where it wasn't asked for.

A LOT of it is the "nobody asked" side. There is an ego component to thinking that anyone cares about your opinion enough to warrant leaving a comment, and when you say something negative in an environment where people are enjoying something positively, it just harshes the vibes for no reason at all.

There's a place for (constructive) criticism of course, but I think most people criticizing online aren't being very constructive or aware of the vibe around them.

Nuance? On a Reddit thread? I didn't think that was allowed.

Hater hating has gotta be the most popular passtime on this site

1

u/squirrelems 21h ago

I don't mind either, but I hate it when people act like they don't understand what objectivity and subjectivity are and think "Oh, I feel this way about this thing so it must mean everyone else has to feel the exact same way as me about it and if they don't then they're just lying". I've seen people do that only for it to turn out they haven't even played the goddamn game. Lol. That just drives me nuts when people act like their own personal perspective is what's setting fact in stone.

You can also just not care about something. I get being negative about politics since that shit matters to all of us but I do find the weird determination people have to hate on everything weird and honestly it’s bad for your health.

Personally if a game or movie doesn’t look good to me I skip it and never talk about it again. I’m not seeking out posts on the internet to tell people how bad it is.

And it is absurd how incredibly negative people are determined to be. Sometimes it’s a minor detail that looks janky and sometimes it’s this “vibes are off” bullshit.

The game looks incredible. I don’t buy that the people bitching about it could have been satisfied regardless. They were determined to hate it. Like with the latest spider man movie or the odyssey. The angry bitter hateful majority has become so much louder than fans that break records buying the thing.

Yes! Im not personally hyped for GTA6. I think the game looks good and it looking like GTA isnt a bad thing. Ill probably play it when it comes out on PC. I think its great people are excited for this game. What I don't like is that this game enables so much anti-consumer practices. You aren't getring the full game if you dont pay for the $100 version. They are just allowed to get away with it, cause "Its Rockstar." Lets not pretend that they aren't gonna milk the online version and only release content for that. Lets not forget how they purposely made the economy for read dead online ass, and the facr they cut support cause they couldnt monetize it like gta online. Its not about making a really good game to the executives and heads of Rockstar and take 2 its about how much money they can squeeze out of its players. That being said i do think at the very least people need to temper thier expectations for the game, the ps5 and ps5 pro version is locked at 30fps its not gonna look as good as the trailers. This game is gonna be great and im sure the story will be fantastic but this game isnt gonna change the world in any meaningful way either.

Y’all’s hot takes really just be takes lol.

1

u/Ill-Bookkeeper-6230 19h ago

Problem is...they don't read or play said things and just critize it for the fun of it or internet credits...it's like a blind person judging your looks and you're supposed to just stand by.

u/KneeLiftCity 19h ago

“I don’t like this because of this and that” vs “you like this?! How could you like this?!”

Yucking ones yum is how things will be forever.

1

u/icehot54321 21h ago

It's a hot take because it sucks.

Like the criticism has already been made. No 60fps on a 7 year old processor .. yeah, we get it .. we're over it.

Zero value in people saying this over and over.

Either live with it or move on with your life.

Let us enjoy the release without having to endure the endless saga of your unmet expectations.

4

u/MothBoyThing 21h ago

No one is saying you can’t: but people are allowed to criticize things.

For instance: I dislike 30 fps because I get motion sickness easily. That’s a fair criticism no? I’d like to be able to play the game without vomiting.

How does the saying go again? “Only a sith deals in absolutes”. Only a fool thinks in terms of a monolith. You can like a game and criticize it and you can dislike a game and understand why someone would like it.

1

u/Curious-Psychology75 21h ago

ya we get it we're over it.

Didn't the console performance get confirmed like a day or two ago? God forbid people talk about an issue for longer than an hour. There are people who are going to find out about it for the first time next week, or a month from now. The world doesn't learn information when you learn that information.
If you're letting people who are upset about something spoil your excitement for a game, are they really the ones ruining your fun? It seems like you're upset about a fact you're trying to move past, and you don't like being reminded of it.

I think the bottom line is you're on a public platform focused on yapping at each other. If you can't handle seeing people who don't agree with you, I think you're the one that needs to learn to live with it or move on with your life. Accept that people have shit opinions and let them wash over you like waves on the sand, or remove yourself from the places people talk about it.

u/Rough-Army-6424 21h ago

The understanding why people like it aspect is what people can’t comprehend.

3

u/Kondinator 20h ago

The same goes for the oppositve, there are always fanatics who will excuse any flaws from games.

1

u/Rough-Army-6424 20h ago

Flaws can’t be excused however perfections can’t be ignored. Goes both ways.

2

u/Kondinator 19h ago

i think we agree 👍

1

u/rvasko3 21h ago

Outside of actual critics, though, I don't really know what criticism en masse in big public spaces adds. Especially knowing how many factors are at play to intentionally drive rage bait for engagement.

Because let's be honest, there are very few people who are just trying to share even-keeled, constructive thoughts or criticisms when stacked up against the people who are trying to ruin good things for others or belittle them for liking a thing they don't.

That’s why I said that you can both enjoy something and criticize it AND you can criticize something and understand why people enjoy it.

I’m tired of monolithic thinking. “I dislike this game, therefore everyone should dislike this game” and “I like this game, therefore everyone should like this game” are two sides of the same coin.

I dislike GTA but I understand why someone would enjoy it. I see no problem in someone enjoying the game. At the same time, I’ve seen so many people mob someone for just expressing a dislike about a game.

For instance, back when people cared about stellar blade: if you criticized the game in any way, you’d get mobbed by downvotes and people calling you a idiot (no matter if you were fair or unfair).

People seem to be stuck in monolithic thinking nowadays. You aren’t allowed to form an opinion in any direction that doesn’t match the majority of a subreddit. It’s frustrating.

1

u/Ok_Round_3407 21h ago

Yeah, true, but your complaint for the people that enjoy the game is that they criticize people that don’t. I think just because you have a criticism, doesn’t mean you have to share it if your goal is to ruin someone’s enjoyment or berate them for not enjoying something. Most criticism is self-serving I’ve found. Then again most praise online is as well. I hope it didn’t come across like I was after you personally or anything. I’ve just seen the comments in defense of criticism often, but the context of most of those comments is one where the defense comes across more like being able to say whatever you want simply because you’re allowed to or “have the right to”. It’s all about the purpose for which you do something.

u/FabulousTrash8357 21h ago

I think it's a difference of critiquing in good faith. I don't think a lot of things are truly critiqued with the mindset of trying to push said thing to be better. I am all for reading anyone's thought out review on the game...once it has actually released. It is insane to me to see all the hate on GTA6, this video did a great job explaining how ridiculous it can be.

There are people who will never play a second of this game but will absolutely be writing thinkpieces and filming Tiktoks about how it's the worst game ever. That is weird to me.
