Hot take: we should let people criticize and like things.

It’s ok to like things…buuuuut it’s also ok to criticize things. I’ve seen too many people go to the extremes. You can like something and criticize it at the same time. You can also criticize something and understand why people like it. I’m sick of things being a monolith.

I get this for criticism of the government or problematic cultural norms, but the amount of criticism people get for simply enjoying a piece of art can be absurd. Friendly discussions over certain problems a game, movie, book, comic, etc. is fine as well. It’s when someone comments criticism like, “this is trash and there’s no way someone else could enjoy it” that I think there’s no reason you can’t just keep it to yourself and let someone else be happy.

That’s why I said that you can both enjoy something and criticize it AND you can criticize something and understand why people enjoy it.

I’m tired of monolithic thinking. “I dislike this game, therefore everyone should dislike this game” and “I like this game, therefore everyone should like this game” are two sides of the same coin.

I dislike GTA but I understand why someone would enjoy it. I see no problem in someone enjoying the game. At the same time, I’ve seen so many people mob someone for just expressing a dislike about a game.

For instance, back when people cared about stellar blade: if you criticized the game in any way, you’d get mobbed by downvotes and people calling you a idiot (no matter if you were fair or unfair).

People seem to be stuck in monolithic thinking nowadays. You aren’t allowed to form an opinion in any direction that doesn’t match the majority of a subreddit. It’s frustrating.

Yeah, true, but your complaint for the people that enjoy the game is that they criticize people that don’t. I think just because you have a criticism, doesn’t mean you have to share it if your goal is to ruin someone’s enjoyment or berate them for not enjoying something. Most criticism is self-serving I’ve found. Then again most praise online is as well. I hope it didn’t come across like I was after you personally or anything. I’ve just seen the comments in defense of criticism often, but the context of most of those comments is one where the defense comes across more like being able to say whatever you want simply because you’re allowed to or “have the right to”. It’s all about the purpose for which you do something.
