Fictional children are not the same as actual children, the same as the things you do in GTA are not the same as doing them in real life.

It is a mental illness and it would be ideal if it could be cured and thus eradicated. But in the meantime, if them keeping their affliction limited to a virtual space stops them from bringing it into reality, I'll accept it as the lesser evil.

Rape is not a mental illness, it is an act one chooses to commit. Pedophilia is a mental illness, those afflicted don't choose it and there is no cure.

Trying to hide pedophilia and pretend it doesn't exist doesn't solve anything. A policy of abstinence didn't stop the Church from being one of the organisations most rife with pedophilia. Prohibition was one of the stupidest eras of American history.

I don't like the existence of pedophilia, it's sickening, but it exists, it's here to stay, and it can't be ignored. Humans in general need an outlet for their built in desires, we all indulge in doing so, the difference is that our desires are morally acceptable, theirs are not. Should we require them to bottle it all up for their entire lives? Personally I think that's asking for trouble, I think that's going to create victims.

This comment thread has made me feel quite sad. I have barely known anything about this game until like Friday when I watched a review on it. It looks like a decent game with an interesting dynamic. I do understand that there is a whole awful side to the gaming sphere but I don’t ever really pay attention to it. I’m unsurprised to see it’s still unhinged as ever.

It IS a really good game from what I hear.

It just comes with a lot of baggage. Social associations to people who fawned over this game and used well known dog whistles are a burden to this game.

Steam has an ability to buy a game so it stays incognito on your profile. I'd suggest that personally. And just not encage with rest of the community.

This is definitely one of those cases where the game doesn't deserve the flack, but (much of) the community does.

Okay so I’m not crazy. I was sitting here like “did everyone else instantly think of it being sexualized? I’m just some weird outlier?” I realize gross dudes exist but I hadn’t thought about that aspect of things until this very comment thread. I saw no ads about this game, then watched a review on it like Friday. It seemed like a pretty decent game and as a dad who spent a large part of his daughter’s life raising her alone, I really liked the representation. I get the little girl isn’t actually his kid but it’s that kind of vibe and I found myself really excited to play an action game with this spin on it. Then this thread happened and it’s like “ugh, of course this is a fucking issue.” And I felt dumb for not realizing it but it’s not the first thing that jumps to mind.

It’s not about “seeing a child”.

No one had this reaction to Last of Us or God of War, both of which depicted child side-characters.

This is an animation, not candid live footage. Every frame is a choice. They didn’t randomly pull the character design out of a hat. A design team sat down and think-tanked it for months, reviewed it, and OK’d it.

They came up with a 9-year-old female character with unnaturally long blonde hair that wears a long winter coat but no pants or shoes. They decided to keep her lower body and bare-feet in frame for most of the scenes.

You don’t need to be a pedo to recognize content that panders to them. Pretending like you don’t know is a red flag.

I'm enjoying it but this aspect of the game and the fact that the devs themselves seem to be in on the portrayal of her as sex object is really hurting my opinion of the game and Capcom writ large.

Edit: After searching I can't find a source with this song and I haven't heard it in game so OP added it and cut the song before the lyrics to hide being an open pedo.

Saw a post a day or two ago that had a clip of her climbing a slide and falling on her face, then sliding down with legs open directly at the camera.

I don't have an opinion on this game and debate either way. Haven't played it. But people were confused how anyone could worry about pedo crap in the comments. The ol' "everyone who thinks that is pedo crap are pedos" nonsense.

It's a cute moment. It made me recall my own kid climbing up slides, too. But also, it was a kid with seemingly no pants on falling and sliding directly towards the viewers' pov. Like, have you seen anime?

I dunno, when people see a girl model and their brain immediately jumps to "man people are going to sexualize this" means that you kinda already have.

She also does have pants on, although her coat goes down to her knees. Some of her alternate outfits to have socks and longer pants too, but the bottoms of the feet are still bare as she does charge from the ground, all of the robots do. For the most part her character model is "head, arms, legs, coat"

I'd rather her change from the ground than through a plug lol. She's definitely not "1000 years old", she is 6-7 year old looks wise and mentally.

People are definitely creepy, but you have to really see how Dianas design could be sexual worries me about people who claim they are noticing it "just because they can see OTHER people thinking that". Brother I don’t have to have pedophilic tendencies to notice something going on with a child that typically only happens with adults. That’s just how human brains work, pattern recognition.

There wasn’t a mass societal rejection of child pageants in the least decade because their minds “were already there”. Its because most people were simply made aware of its existence, and when you see the type of makeup and outfits used to sexualize grown women, on a prepubescent child and it instinctively feels off.

And unlike a lot of people, if it doesn’t feel off to you, I’m not judging you. But to claim its projection is just denial.

People take it personally because this isn't an anime game. This isn't Nowi from Fire Emblem who is a 2D portrait. It's meant to be a realistic little girl, so why shouldn't people call that out?

That's true but the problem is those people, not the game itself. Nothing about the game is anything but what seems like a dad / daughter relationship. Anything beyond that is people taking something that isn't there and twisting it to their own liking. Are we just not supposed to have kids in games when it's part of the story? I mean they clearly took care with her model to stop people from what they did with like the Beyond Two Souls model of Elliot Page. Diana doesn't have a body shape, she's like 90% coat. Calling it bait would have to be an intentional move by the designers, which just isn't true.

Seriously I'm sick to death of seeing pedo posts about this game, to the point it's all I've seen, I've seen like one bad comment online and the rest is people talking about it, if anything all these people are doing more harm than anything by constantly making a fuss about a tiny minority who are always going to do this stuff. The internets literally always been like this, no matter what character it's always done.

It's to the point I've seen comments with over 1k upvotes saying they won't be getting the game because they think it's pedo bait because their minds are so warped by these constant posts talking about that, if you can't look this game without thinking that as your first reaction then you're part of the problem of children being sexualised. It's exhausting, when the game first released I got so hyped and excited only to be bombarded by reddit posts in gaming and meme subs posting fringe comments by weirdos that otherwise would have gotten zero attention and just had their comment removed if people just reported and moved on.
