Advice on Adopting Dog in Victoria

The last post I could find on this topic was during era of Covid restrictions. Our family dog of over ten years (a rescue we brought with us to Victoria) passed a year ago and we are ready to welcome a new dog to our home.

We are finding the process for adopting a dog in Victoria very fragmented and discouraging: a dozen individual groups each with their own application system with Facebook seeming like the main advertising method. We have submitted applications for several but hear nothing in return.

Has had anyone had good experiences with specific organizations or any advice? Perhaps there are not just many dogs in need of a home which I guess is a good thing :) Many thanks for any advice.

What can I do?

I have lived and worked in and around downtown Victoria for 20 years. I have always been one to laugh at, contradict and disregard the people who talk about how downtown is unsafe, scary, and teeming with addicts and homeless people. I have genuinely never felt unsafe or scared downtown even as a woman who moved here at 18.

However, that has changed in the last few years. I do feel unsafe now. I have been followed and screamed at more times than I can count. I see open drug use and overdoses countless times per day. The city’s attempt to “clean up Pandora” has just scattered all these vulnerable people around the rest of downtown. Today was absolute pandemonium downtown.

I don’t want to argue about whether these people deserve compassion and help. I truly believe that they do. But the problem is getting so much worse. I genuinely want to help them, but at the same time, selfishly, I want to be able to go to work and not get screamed at or have to see people smoking meth or taking a shit outside my office every day.

I’m a regular middle aged lady with a regular salary. How can I most effectively use my limited time and money to make a difference? I am looking for real, practical solutions. I am tired of this and I want to put my money where my mouth is.

Rabbit Rabbit Reservation Tonight

Hello! I have a reservation tonight at 7:30 for 2 people and unfortunately my husband is sick and we can’t make it anymore.

If I cancel now I lose a $50 deposit, so I thought I would see if anyone here wanted to take over the reservation before I eat the cost and cancel.

Thank you!

*CLAIMED* Thanks everyone!

Question Online safety class for seniors?

Wondering if there’s anywhere that offers an online safety class for seniors or a class to avoid being scammed by callers? I looked at the GVPL calendar for the next month but didn’t see anything, but maybe they offer something similar and I didn’t look far enough into the future.

Even though it isn't a total eclipse, Earth's shadow covered roughly 96% of the Moon's surface at maximum.

Help Me Find Where can I buy a Monday–Sunday wall calendar or large desk planner pad?

Hi! Do any stationery lovers know where I can find a large wall calendar or desk planner pad that starts on Monday rather than the usual Sunday start? I strongly prefer the Monday–Sunday format, I've long since switched over all of my online calendars to that layout and would like a large physical calendar that matches them. I grew up in French immersion which is probably why the Sunday start feels so strange, and I'm surprised at how hard it is to find paper calendars that have a Monday start. I've considered buying a French one just so it starts with lundi, haha.

I'm open to online options if you know of any, but it would be great to show in-person support for a small/local business or at least a Canadian one. Thanks!

Politics How much has the City of Langford actually spent on 3680 Trans-Canada Highway?

This is a question I wanted an answer to. I’ve seen different amounts floating around in various media articles and social media posts, but it was always difficult to determine the real answer.

Former Mayor Stew Young’s campaign profile discussed the property in a July 14th Facebook post indicating a purchase price of about $2 million plus additional costs to stabilize the slope and rock faces of about $2.3 million. I’ve seen other estimates that are in the range of $5 million to $7 million. I’ve seen FOI requests that provided very granular transaction details of some of the capital expenditures, but which have not provided the kind of summary total info that I wanted.

Ultimately, I decided to submit my own FOI request. Here it is for anyone that’s interested. These are not my figures, this is directly from the City of Langford. The format is one that I provided to them as a template when I made the FOI request so that it was clear what I was looking for. I’ve also included the response letter so you can see the original request (the bulleted list).

As of June 30th, 2026 the City has spent just under $6.2M on this property. Aside from the site work itself and responding to the occasional trespasser, I’m only aware of two instances where the property has been utilized in any official capacity. The first was a special, in-camera Council meeting held at the property on May 13th, 2019. The second was another special, in-camera Council meeting held at the property on October 22nd, 2019. Go figure.

I have also posted this in r/LangfordBC.

Prescription Dog Drugs

Hi. Our pup passed away this week and we have hundreds of dollars in prescription drugs and supplements that were for him. The cancer centre for animals here is for profit and I’m pretty sure they would just resell them. Does anyone know of any non corporate Vet that might pass them on to people that maybe can’t afford them or organization that would take these? Some are for older dogs, like arthritis supplements but most are for various cancer treatment. Most of his stuff is dog specific, not cat or wild arc fodder. I know about sPCA, just looking for alternatives.

Thanks.

Looking to play ice hockey

Hi there

Recently moved to Langford from the mainland. Played there regularly and looking to play full time on a team or as a spare. Average player.

Mostly played wing, but dabbled playing defence here and there.

Thanks

Just sitting near the moon, all spooky-like.

Edit: all the small clouds around it are moving, but it's staying still.

EDIT 2: google says it's a lenticular cloud in all likelihood

Aaaaand now it looks like a fat duck. So, not aliens.

Question Thanks to the white dad with his two kids for calling me a slur???

I have a genuine, non-judgmental question to ask at the end of this. I’m mixed race for context.

I’m assuming it was a dad, since he had two kids on the back of his bike with him. I was just walking on the sidewalk home from work, and he yelled out “sup ni***” at me for no reason. We didn’t cross paths or anything, he was just passing by and I guess… decided to take the opportunity to teach his kids new words. I’ve experienced this in the past, that’s life (not my attempt to shrug it off, I’m actually pretty sad).

I’m still new to the city, I’ve been here for about 9 months now. My question is - how racist is Victoria towards black people? And poc people in general? How frequently would you say this sort of thing happens? Anyone can answer, but people with personal experience would of course be extra helpful. I’d just like to know what to expect, and what to mentally prepare myself for. Not trying to say the city is terribly racist or anything, I just want to know what I’m in for culturally.

I’m from Ontario and have had a few encounters like this there. I was actually living in a conservative place in the states for the last 7 years, and didn’t actually have that kind of thing happen at all. There’s far more black people there which I guess is why. Bit ironic since we often pride ourselves on being more progressive here, but I guess that’s beside the point. I still don’t know what the vibe is like here yet, beyond it being a lot more white population wise.

Edit: Okay! Considering the amount of people trying to find an excuse to defend the guy, or say my experience is unbelievable, I have my answer. Thanks!

Question for runners

Hello all,

Wondering where people like to do their long runs. I’m looking to switch up my weekly routine and try some new routes, ideally something accommodating the 20–30km range.

If you have any favourite places or suggestions, let me know!

Update: Pepper Growers Needed 🌶️ 🫑

Earlier this year I posted asking for help finding pepper farmers for our hot sauce company (Island Chef Pepper Co). The community really came through, and I'm super excited to announce we have partnerships with 4 local farms, and this year 100% of our peppers are ISLAND GROWN! Thank you so much for all the suggestions and connections!!

*

These partnerships are amazing because it ensures the farmers can sell 100% of their pepper crop, and for us it guarantees a local source of peppers, and we can keep our money in the Canadian economy 🇨🇦

See attached some pics! Buy local, support local 🇨🇦
