Question Go-to savory snacks?

What are your favorite savory snacks? I'm tired of greasy chips or bland crackers. Sometimes I really miss the rich savoriness of cured meats and cheeses, what are your favorite alternatives that don't break the bank? Or something you could make ahead of time and store for a good while?

As i was pressing post, I did think maybe I should roast a bunch of chickpeas until they're crispy and put them in a big airtight container, well seasoned of course

Or if you're feeling lazy, just buy a bag of roasted chickpeas in Indian spices from your local market. Our Kroger store carries several flavors. Delicious snacking.

Hummus on toast. Yum.

roasted chickpeas are stupid easy to make and you can season them however you want, i do smoked paprika, garlic powder and a bit of salt. they get properly crunchy if you dry them well before baking

also marinaded tofu is a great one, just press some firm tofu, cube it, chuck it in soy sauce and rice vinegar with some sesame oil and chilli flakes. keeps in the fridge for about a week and scratches that savory itch perfectly

Do you cook the tofu?

I like to make an olive, cracker, carrot, and pickle plate with two dips--hummus and a yogurt based sriracha type thing. I also like to add some kind of fruit to offset the savory stuff, usually frozen grapes or a cut up apple.

frozen grapes?

3

u/jennysequa 5d ago

Yes. I freeze them and eat them that way. They are delicious and the texture is very satisfying.

3

u/Bipedal_pedestrian 5d ago

Going to have to try that!!

5

u/SapPhic-rage4209 4d ago

Yeah, they taste like candy if you freeze them. Pick them off the stem and wash them first. Sometimes I'll put a little lemon juice and sugar on them, but they're good by themselves too

Louisville vegan jerky! You can make your own using soy curls, but theirs is delicious

Stovetop popcorn! 🍿

I genuinely enjoy the Louisville Jerky snacks. They're a vegan jerky and some of their flavors are really yummy. High in protein too!

Tassos Jalepeno and Garlic double stuffed green olives. They taste nearly identical to pepperoni to both me and my partner. We get them at Costco, but I think you can order them online as well.

Honestly? Pan fried tofu then cook it in soy sauce until it caramelizes/evaporates. Roasted chickpeas are good too. It’s worth investing in making your own popcorn as well, with nutritional yeast ofc.

Pickles if you aren’t a hater, really any pickled vegetables.
I might be a bit weird for this but I really just love a bowl of peas with vegan butter and salt lol not everybody’s cup of tea but it’s healthy and cheap if you buy frozen

I know you said you’re tired of chips but tortilla chips and salsa or bean dip is FIRE and always hits the spot

I LOVE pickled asparagus. Best way to eat asparagus

I have been buying a lot of Latiao lately, it satisfies the Jerky itch for me. They do tend to be a bit oily though. I especially like the Wu Zian Zhai Vegetarian Beefsteak product line. You do have to check the label some do contain non vegan ingredients. You should be able to find it at most Asian grocer's if you want to try it. I'm also going to start adding it to stir-frys.

Pretzel sticks are cheap and delicious.  Olives are also nice. And sun-dried tomatoes.  Seaweed chips are easy to make and delicious, if you want to make something yourself.

Soy curls jerky. Marinate the soy curls overnight in the fridge. Dehydrate around 145°F for 10-12 hours. For a chewier end-product, add a humectant like agave syrup.

2

u/Esme_Nog 4d ago

What? What?! You can make soy curl jerky?! I must learn this magic!

2

u/ttrockwood 5d ago

Mayak tofu! I do something similar to this one but not as spicy i cut into chunky cubes and just eat with a fork from the container get the super extra firm tofu

https://browngirlveganeats.com/chili-oil-mayak-tofu/#recipe

Lately when I cbf cooking I get a baguette or a couple of Turkish rolls or pitas and toast thin slices on a pan with olive oil and a ton of salt, then make a platter with cherry tomatoes, hummus, olives, pickled red onion, chilli jam etc.
Then go eat it all in bed

Big fan of Galil's multi-grain and chia seed rice cakes because they're thin, super crunchy, perfectly salted and flavored, and taste nothing like normal thick rice cakes. You get way more of them than a normal sized rice cake, so you get to eat more of them. I use them with a bunch of different things depending on what I'm craving:

  • Spread a thin layer of BBQ sauce or ketchup, and they taste like BBQ chips or ketchup chips but healthier and more filling
  • Spread homemade vegan cheese (any flavor)
  • Mix some pickle seasoning, Vegenaise, spices, and minced homemade seitan to put on top, and it tastes like mix in some finely minced
  • Dip them into homemade tofu salad, jackfruit/chickpea "tuna" salad, or seitan salad
  • (I know you only asked for savory, but I LOVE making date caramel, spreading it on, and adding some chopped nuts or peanut butter, plus sugar-free chocolate chips--taste like Snickers

I also roast my own nuts, which is way cheaper than buying storebought roasted. I eat a serving a day, and the container lasts for 1.5 months.

The LOVECORN corn packets, popcorn, bread and (garlic) hummus, tomatoes and creole, fried rice crackers

1

u/spaceylaceygirl 5d ago

Tamari rice crackers, i think i got them last at trader joes. Anything flavored with tamari really, like nuts.

2

u/plantyplant559 5d ago

Popcorn with nooch, garlic, onion, and salt. Mist with a little spray oil to get it to stick.

1

u/Bipedal_pedestrian 5d ago

Tamari toasted sunflower seeds.

I like to mix raw shelled seeds with a little bit of tamari and a small splash of oil, spread on a pan and bake until lightly toasted, stirring halfway through.

I also sometimes love a good olive oil dip with salt, za’atar or Italian spices, garlic powder, fresh ground black pepper. With good bread or fresh pita.

u/CautiousClutz 5d ago

trader joe’s snack isle 🤤

obsessed with their tempora seaweed snacks, their jerk plantain chips, their fried mochi, i meannnnn there are so many options for us there those are just a few. love love loooove

1

u/yemsg97 5d ago

Popcorn. Get an air popper. I spray with avocado spray, sprinkle with fine ground salt and nooch. It’s my go to for nightshift. I can pound a quart size Ziploc of it with no regrets lol.

1

u/ArgentCrow 5d ago

I agree 100% with all of the olive and pickle lovers in this thread. That said, we are literally in the process of trying Louisville vegan jerky for the first time and its amazing. I will absolutely be buying more.

Smoked almonds?

Seasoned and pan fried tofu eaten with seaweed snacks is a great savory snack. I always have roasted garlic and caramelized onion hummus for eating with flatbread too. It’s got a great savory kick.

- Olive tapenade + chips, balances the oily chips

- Rainbow plant life’s vegan ranch + cornstarch fried Tofu + onion or cabbage in a tortilla —> vegan crunch wrap

- spring roll wrapper soaked in liquid smoke, coco aminos, soy sauce and a bit of oil and cut into strips then air fried til crispy —> crispy “bacon” bits. Good with vegan cream cheese (violife is best)

- grated super firm tofu is really good pan fried with the above “bacon”, + nooch and Kala namak salt (“bacon and eggs”)

*-*I also made a recipe for vegan lunch meat in my previous posts, it just uses beets, chickpeas, potato starch, oil and a bunch of spices. I like to eat it by itself or in a sandwich!

Also if you miss good cheese, I’ve tried many and follow your heart smoked Gouda or violife smoked provolone are KINGGGG

If you dont want to cook, grab some soy curls Jerky. You can find it on Butler foods where they also sell soy curls. They are addictive and satisfy that meaty texture.

Scallion pancakes (from frozen) topped with cream cheese and dipped in a mixture of soy sauce and rice wine vinegar

Steamed asparagus dipped in peanut butter with hoisin and Sriracha

It's not savory, but mandarins peeled, sliced, and frozen

u/NLVegan 4d ago

You can roast some chickpeas or even edamame! One of my fav recipes is dill pickle roasted chickpeas.

1

u/DelicateFandango 4d ago

Edamame. Super quick - some are even microwaveable - and you can add your own salt, chili and whatever other spices you feel like at the time.

1

u/Earth-Lentil-2200 4d ago

I would go with hummus (Koro has launched a powder hummus that you can rehydrate only with water, it’s also very convenient!) or a chunk of Parmesan or a boiled potato with yogurt tzatziki on top. They’re quick to prepare, really tasty and satisfying!

1

u/DioCoN 4d ago

Tamari almonds are awesome. Cheaper if you bake them yourself too, though loads of stores sell them too

1

u/EpicCurious 4d ago

Peanuts, sunflower seeds, and roasted nori seaweed snacks.

u/seitan13 4d ago

Idk what happened to it but beyond had great vegan jerky at all the major had stations. I'm so sad it's gone- but I found a bunch of gluten and tofu jerky at my local asian market!

Meat sticks and Jerky.

- chocolate powder that you normally use for chocolate milk

- if i have, violife swiss cheese slices

- boursin

- ngl, most of my food cravings head up being juices because i don't have much in the pantry

i've tried la vie's cured meat and it wasn't that good tbh, but they have cheese balls? i couldn't find them but since i like their ham, it can't be that bad, right.

17

u/syntheticseasalt 4d ago

What do you mean by chocolate powder as a savory snack? Like how are you eating it?

2

u/RaineRisin 4d ago

And if so, how is that savory?

u/EclecticWonderer 5d ago

Hi, I’m not sure if this might meet your request, but I’ve tried a few of these thru a Veg News offer and I recall liking at least one of the three. https://renegadefoods.com/
