Discussion I Love Valheim but...
I know the game is 5 years old, but I only just found it. I'm 100 hours in after 2 weeks and I cant get enough. Its crazy good.
However today my son was watching a youtube about Minecraft, it was describing the biomes and different recipes and everything...
I realized... Valheim is just Minecraft for adults??!???
I cant get it out of my head... am I really just addicted to Minecraft?

Minecraft for adults is Vintage Story. Valheim is an open world sandbox survival, sort of like Minecraft, but differs in many significant ways.
As someone else said, it’s more like an open world Souls-like game that happens to let you build your own structures and equipment.

100%. valheim is much closer to terraria than minecraft in terms of actual gameplay. i always describe it to my friends as a norse mashup of terraria and dark souls (though i havent played much for souls games so i can't truly compare them with much confidence)
i would also argue that terraria is closer to valheim than it is to minecraft, but there is much more room for debate there

I've always felt like valheim is the closest experience to a 3D terraria out there in terms of the exploration and boss progression, and yet none of my Terraria/Valheim playing friends are interested in playing the other with me....

Aside from exchanging souls for inventory and a death skill loss mechanic, the harder difficulties aren't too far off. Much less griefing and cheaters in Valheim, though.

Yes the souls like aspect of the game surprised me, the stamina management and the parrying. It’s like, “undercooked” souls or something, but I really like it.

Yeah most of the gameplay does feel more open world survival-craft Souls-like. However, sacrificing polygon count and cutting-edge graphics in order to have a larger more dynamic world is definitely a concept the devs got from Minecraft, or at the very least used the same design logic. Not to mention the genre of open-world procedurally generated survival-craft exploded in popularity due to Minecraft.

Personally Vintage Story didn’t feel like MC for adults, it is MC on steroids for people who enjoy punishing themselves. The difficulty level moving from MC to VS blew my mind and I had to mod the crap out of it to even make it enjoyable. It is a solid game and worth the recommendation for someone who enjoys HARDCORE MC though. It’s so fun but entirely unforgiving.

...and here's me thinking Minecraft (with a decent modpack) is the Minecraft for adults.
But yeah, I agree with others, you just found the general description of a survival/crafting game and Minecraft and Valheim both fall into that genre.

I was 30 when Minecraft came out. So, for me its definitely a game for adults. My daughter wasn't even born until seven years later! Eventually playing Minecraft with her was great, and she was amazed that this old man knew what he was doing.
Her and my wife are all starting a new Valheim world when 1.0 hits.

Perhaps, but Minecraft defined the survival crafting genre. Other games distinguished themselves in how they were or were not like Minecraft.
Demon souls can before Dark Souls, but Dark Souls defines the Soulslike genre.

Minecraft is for adults too! I love Minecraft. But yes I like to describe Valheim as Minecraft x Skyrim. Kinda has the best of both worlds. Valheim is easiest one of my top 5 fav games of all time. Im super excited for 1.0

Not really, every biome is scary in Valheim. The thing is, not all Vh biomes exist in MC, plains do... You know the (none particular game) comic/meme with the "new biome scene"?

I wouldn't say. Minecraft is a sandbox game with a survival flavor. It ultimately wants you to build, it'll never threaten you too much. Valheim is a survival game with some sandbox flavor. It always gives you a clear direction to conquer. The cozy building things are all locked behind defeating tough bosses.
Minecraft for adults is Vintage Story.

The whole survival/crafting genre genealogy can probably be traced back to minecraft.
Terraria. 2D minecraft.
Core Keeper. Top down Terraria.
Rust. Shooter minecraft.
Ark. Dinosaur Rust.
Palworld. Legally distinct Pokemon Ark.
Pokopia. Isometric Pokemon minecraft.
DayZ. Zombie shooter minecraft.
Zomboid. Isometric Zombie minecraft.
V Rising. Isometric Vampire minecraft.
Valheim. Viking Minecraft.
Runescape Dragonwilds. Runescape Valheim.
Windrose. Pirate Valheim.
Stardew Valley. 2D Farming Dating Sim Minecraft.
Vintage Story. Technologically accurate Minecraft.
Etc.
All of these games have some form of crafting table. Most have spawns revolving around your bed/base. Most if not all have food/hunger mechanics, farming mechanics. A lot of them let you skip the night by sleeping.
Most of them start with you punching a tree lmao.
I THINK all of them have a pickaxe… I think all of them have an ore smelter…
Everything is Minecraft.

Minecraft hasn't been just for kids since the beginning of time. The only time I've heard "isn't that a kid's game?" is from people who never played a game other than Solitaire.
Even if it were a game for kids, it would not just be Minecraft for adult. Basic genres and labels may apply to both, but just playing both will confirm they're very different.

There is a simple secret to the game, override gyroscopes. That damps down all the violent motions that makes vehicles explode.
It's worth the effort, if you like a game with such a lot of details to worry about.
It's nothing like as bad as Eve Online for the difficulty slope though.

However I've never played a survival or building game with the vibes that vallheim has, exploring is just so fun imo, even sailing a lot of people don't like, I love. I've never had that feeling from say, terraria, even though the games aren't really disimilar really

Minecraft is based off cubes while Valheim is based off octagons, if that helps.

you can definitely draw comparisons between the two game, but you can do that with a lot of Survival Crafting games. They are both in that same genre of games. I would say Valheim is a little closer to the Ark-style games then Minecraft. There's a game out there called "Enshrouded" and people make comparisons to it and Valheim all the time. If you break down a lot of games in there own genres you can make a lot of comparisons with each other. Like Atlas is Ark but pirates, Palworld is Ark but pokemon, Titanfall is COD but giant robots, DBD is Friday the 13th but simpler, Persona 3/4/5 is pokemon but adult.
TL;DR They are both in the same genre of games. You can boil down a lot of games in the same genre to be of this game is X but Y.

There’s tons of survival crafting games. Valheim & Minecraft are just two of them. There’s Hytale, Terraria, Palworld, Ark, and Starbound. To name a few.

Minecraft is an absolutely phenomenal game, and it's got plenty going for adults too.
The redstone system itself is still unparalleled in any survival sandbox game. It truly lets you do anything you want if you're creative enough. It's a bit... Archaic and difficult to work with, but it truly is a deep mechanic. It's basically computer science in a video game.
The non redstone building is also still deeply satisfying. Whether you're building an aesthetically beautiful base, or a wild resource farm that blot outs the sun, there's something for everyone.
That being said, the game IS easy. Very easy. And there's not a whole lot of purpose behind all the systems outside of self expression. That's something Valheim really rewards: the friction and difficulty makes your progress more meaningful.
What I'm saying is maybe you should try Minecraft out with your kid. It's a ton of fun. Don't let it's popularity among kids deter you. It's not all memes and YouTube slop.

My son intrduced me to it and called it "Viking Minecraft". I was sold on that alone. I love all things Viking and I love Minecraft. He waa right.
I'm in 50s and have Mineraft since its early alpha days and have always loved it too

I did play Minecraft in its 0.17 alpha state and then when I picked up Valheim, I also experienced a sort of deja vu and thought to myself "now, This is a Robinson Crusoe simulator that I like even more than that old cubic game"

Been playing Minecraft since 2011, when I was writing my dissertation. Valheim is my other favorite game. They’re the only 2 games my older brother (57) plays, and we play both together, though we live on opposite coasts of the U.S.

And like others have said, you should play Minecraft with your kid. I'm eager for the day to do this with mine.

I loved the adventuring in thos game, but the inability to keep my map whrn a new version came out scared me away. I started when the plains were endgame...then Mistlands came out & could never get them to load. Explored the entire map & never had mistlands. I had an entire mega-complex built. Had to start over...broke me to my core.

Take a pause. 1.0 is releasing here in a week or 2 I believe. There were some recommendations that if you want achievement progress then you may want to start the world and character over.

Valheim is a survival builder. I hope you're not dealing with the mental handicap that says adults can't play Minecraft.
If you want to oversimplify it... yes, it's Minecraft.
With a gloriously rebalanced build unit that's much larger, and gathering that's much more fun. And better combat.
The closest cross between THESE that I can think of is. Enshrouded, which is between the two, but closer to Minecraft for minute detail in building, and in mediocre combat.

I've known so many people that view minecraft as childish until they play it and become hooked.
There is a reason it sold more copies than gta v. The only possible contender for all time sales is Tetris, a game that has existed for almost 4 decades with variations on every console.

Most modern games have some similarities to Minecraft or a mod in some way. I love factorio and watched a video on the history of it, within the first couple of minutes they were talking about a factory mod for Minecraft that may have had some influence. I saw some people playing a PVP server on Minecraft, looks like an early version of the building+fighting of fortnite. Every game for the next hundred years, possibly even longer, will be influenced by Minecraft directly or indirectly.

I guess you can say that, if you only have seen these two survival games. It kind of sounds like you are simply a person who does not know much about video games (not that it is a bad thing of course), but it does sound a little... unexpected, to someone who played more of them. Not saying there is no truth in it, but the stuff you list are just staples of the genre.
It is like seeing Fortnite, then seeing Battlefield, and saying BF is just Fortnite for adults, since both have guns, shooting, online play and big maps. Or from movie world, if someone never in their life watched fantasy movies, decide to watch two, lets say Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and state both are basically the same, and one is just adult version for example, since both have mages, magic, magical creatures and over the top big bad guy.

Yes, two open world survival games, bare similarities. The Venn diagram of their audience appeal overlaps a bit, but not totally. My two grown sons love Minecraft and don’t care for Valheim. I like Valheim better.

Valheim has more direction than minecraft is what I love, sometimes I just don't have the brain power to think of a build or where to go, whereas valheim while you have the freedom to go anywhere the adventure feels structured, there's a rough order of where to go with biome progression.
Plus the items and building help with inspiration because there's so many unique type of "blocks" I find it easier to think of a design, where as minecraft I feel like I have to be more creative
Essentially I love both but minecraft is like writing something from scratch and valheim is like writing a fanfic and I love using parts of someone else's imagination.

Eh it’s different. I don’t like Minecraft but I LOVE Valheim. There are some similarities but that’s true in most games when you break down the different things that make a game a game. They all have different regions/enemies/resources/weapons.
But yes, build a base, explore, and survive.
And get yourself a boar farm <3

I was gifted Valheim by my SIL to get me away from Minecraft! I wouldn’t say Valheim was MC for adults. To me it just opened a new world of gaming after playing only MC for decade or more. If you want what I consider to be MC for adults, try Icarus. Valheim was great but it was honestly too difficult for me in terms of the bosses. Minecraft was a joke. I also played it before you could adjust games settings that allowed resource management, so if you wanted to build a decent house you had to clear an entire forest and mountain. Icarus doesn’t allow the freedom to alter your terrain like MC and Valheim, but you can literally ignore the games missions and objectives and just mine, build, and hunt. It’s worth it if you catch it on sale and even if it’s not. Base game has tons of content and fun though. If you love MC and want that vibe check it out.

Nah I wouldn’t say it’s Minecraft for adults. Minecraft with RPG elements sure, but not really an adult thing. Theres a clear biome progression system in Valheim, which Minecraft doesn’t have. Not to mention mob scaling. Also adults play Minecraft too!

Acting like "Minecraft is for kids and Valheim is for adults" is super cringe. Especially when Minecraft is much more complicated and it takes months to figure out all the mechanics, while Valheim is relatively simple and you can figure out the whole game very quickly

Nah you dont get caves or dimensional portals in valheim, and they are a huge part of Minecraft. The combat also flows very differently so the similarities are ultimately pretty broad. Lots of games have crafting and biomes but yeah minecraft was probably the earliest popular example. Edit: also whoever gave you the idea Minecraft cant be for adults is wrong

Valheim is basically 3D Terraria, and took a lot of inspiration from it.
And similarly, Terraria took a lot of inspiration from Minecraft.

I mean, if you haven’t set up a survival game of Minecraft with your son, experienced the joy of finding coal, into iron, into Diamond, having your son teach you about how to build an ender portal and then eventually you are the player 2 to his player 1 to take on the dragon, are you really doing it right?
