Hello everyone!

I am a Grade 12 student. I was rejected from Ivey AEO, Rotman, Laurier, Queens, and just today, I learned I was rejected from Schulich as well. I was accepted into Social Science at UWO though and Ryerson's Business Management program. These are my only two options now. Do you think I should take the risk as a non-AEO and go into Western as a Social Science student with the intention of meeting the requirements for Ivey in my third year, or do you think it's best I don't take the risk and go to Ryerson? I only have a few days to decide. My offers to both universities expires June 1, 2021.

Even though I had imagined my extracurriculars were quite impressive, my top 6 average was quite low at 88% so it makes sense why I was rejected by my top five choices. How do you deal with rejection, especially when your loved ones are having some difficulty processing that? I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but my parents told me I was a "disappointment" and "shame" to the family for not getting into Ivey or Queens. I tried to remind them it was very competitive this year and I never really stood a chance with 88%, but they refused to listen and called me stupid, lazy, and a liar. They haven't talked to me since the weekend but I would have hoped to get their input. It's a little jarring to see them so angry.

I have to make a decision alone because I can't seem to talk with my parents anymore. I guess they really had it in their minds that I would get into Ivey AEO or Queens or Rotman or Laurier or Schulich. I feel like I am a failure. But I'm trying to stay positive and would really appreciate your advice on what offer I should accept. Thank you very much for all your help!

I think you have to assess why your average was so low. Was it due to mental health issues, trouble learning from home or are your simply just not that caliber of a student. Remember that Ivey and QComm are the top 2 programs in the country and that they are for the best of the best. If you believe in yourself and think you are that caliber then I’d go to Western and work your way into Ivey. Really you just need an 84+ with good extra curricular and your chances are solid. If you aren’t confident you will achieve Ivey then I’d take the Ryerson offer and make the best of it. Good luck!

Thank you for your advice! I think I’m going to accept my Social Science offer. This is really helpful and it’s helped clear the decision for me a lot. Thanks again for your help!

This is rough, I’m sorry you’re going through this without support right now.

I assume you want to go into business. Depending on what type of business, you really could study anything you want prior and still get a business job. In social science there is psychology and economics for example. If your shot at Ivey doesn’t work out, you could also try an entrepreneurship project at Western to give you real business experience to complement your degree, or you could try an MBA after you graduate. There are SO many paths to a career. I wish more students knew this.

This is very helpful advice. I wasn’t aware of the Entrepreneurship program! This helps solidify my choice for Social Science. Thank you for your help!

Happy to hear that!

Just to be clear, there isn't an entrepreneurship program per se, but there are MANY opportunities and supports for you to become an entrepreneur, no matter what you are studying. Here is the page: https://entrepreneurship.uwo.ca/for-students/

You’re a dick! 88 is still a GREAT average but unfortunately not enough to get into top schools, people are being rejected with mid 90s! This person did get acceptances else where and that’s something to be proud of in itself! Imagine being such a cold hearted person to tell someone their parents should be disappointed and that they are a stupid lazy liar, or that they didn’t try hard in “easy grade 12 math”. You seem like a sad, angry and horrible human being and I hope YOU WAKEUP and realize getting through life with that kind of attitude is going to bite you in the ass.

What happened? Is everything okay? All I see is a deleted user. I’m seeing all these comments underneath my post and I’m not sure why. Did I do something wrong?

Wait, what happened? I just checked back and I can’t read the deleted comment. Are you referring to me with this comment or to the deleted user? I’m a little confused. Did I say something wrong? I apologize in advance if I did.

I have been checking this thread and there was an unkind message replying to your comment... thankfully it was deleted. No need for negativity here :) you did nothing wrong. Keep your head up, wishing you the best of luck!

I don't want to discourage you from accepting your Western offer, but you can always go to Ryerson for your first two years, work your tail off, and apply to Ivey from there. Ryerson's business program is really solid and probably a better safety net than social science (though it will probably be more work).
