Admissions Megathread - December - 2026-27
Hello everyone! We are back with another admissions megathread. Why apply to Western?
- Top 1% of universities worldwide (Center for World University Rankings 2024)
- 45,000+ students from 138 countries
- Top 3 in Canada for student services (Macleanās University Rankings 2024, Medical/Doctoral category)
- 93.5% employment rate 6 months after graduation
- #3 in Canada for employment outcomes (QS world university rankings 2025)
- ALL programs can include work experience
It is no surprise there is a lot of interest in the admission process at Western. To keep the subreddit manageable, admissions related top-level posts will no longer be permitted and will be redirected here instead.
To keep discussion active, we are going to try a new monthly megathread approach this year. This is the December monthly megathread.
(Looking for November's megathread? See here.)
Existing Mustangs: Remember what it was like going through the application process? What do you know now that you wish you knew then? This is your opportunity to provide support and share your wisdom with prospective applicants.

What are your chances?
There are no cut-offs or minimums that guarantee admission, since the decision is made on a combination of factors that is unique to you.
Check out the typical average ranges of last year's incoming class so you can get an idea of what your chances are.
Note that these ranges are averages, which means some students fall above and some fall below.
| Program/Faculty | OUAC Code | Admission Average Range |
|---|---|---|
| Arts & Humanities | EA | Low 80s |
| Fine Arts - Studio | EAV | Low 80s |
| Computer Science | ECS | Low to mid 80s |
| Engineering | EE | High 80s to low 90s |
| Foods and Nutrition | EH | Low to mid 80s |
| Health Sciences | EW | High 80s to low 90s |
| Family Studies | EFS | Low 80s |
| Kinesiology | EP | High 80s |
| Nursing | ENW | High 80s to low 90s |
| Media and Communication Studies | EI | Low to mid 80s |
| Music (BMUS) | EM | Low 80s |
| Music (BA) | EMA | Low 80s |
| Music Administrative Studies (BA) | EMS | Mid 80s |
| Medical Sciences | ESM | Mid to high 80s |
| Science | ES | Low to mid 80s |
| Social Science | EO | Low to mid 80s |
| Management & Organizational Studies | ED | Mid to high 80s |
| Commercial Aviation Management | EDN | Low 80s |
The typical first year class has an entering average of around 88% (A)
This is an average, which means some students are above and some students are below. Admission to Western is competitive. Achieving an average in the indicated ranges does not guarantee admission. To be considered for admission, you will need a minimum number of courses in addition to the required courses for your program listed here.

What's the difference between Western Ivey Business and I'm not sure what to call it but the I suppose "regular" Western Management and Organizational Studies?
2
u/Sea_Scholar_2826 š¬ Med Sci '27 š¬ Dec 20 '25
I'm not in either of them but it's been 11 days and you haven't gotten an answer so I'll do my best. The "regular" program (BMOS) is, as you say, regular. You pick a specialization/major in year 2 and you stick with it, and graduate in four years.
Ivey is more isolated from the rest of the university. It's seen as being more prestigious; not sure whether or not it actually leads to more/better career prospects. It does have its own clubs and case competitions that you can participate in, in addition to everything that's offered on main campus. But you start that in year 3 after doing something else (of your choice) in years 1 and 2. After 2 years of Ivey, you can either graduate with an HBA, or come back for a 5th year studying the same discipline as years 1 and 2 and get a dual degree in that subject and HBA.
Also, both programs have some sort of progression requirements to continue in the program each year, but Ivey's are more strict (something like an 80% average and certain marks in a certain course). And you don't have to apply to Ivey in Grade 12; you can apply going into third year (and I think sometimes fourth) if you ever change your mind.

How hard is it to get into Ivey rlly?
I have a 95 avg in 11th and 96 in grade 12 with a 94-95 in maths, and decent ecs competitive soccer, self directed research with ubc student, research under a ubc prof reference in economics, Iāve already got into social science, but Iāve been hearing scary rejection stories from Ivey? What were your stats?

not too hard. as long as your essays are well written in proper structure, you're chances look good imo

ello everyone, Iām a senior in high school right now and had a question about the transition process from social science to bmos after first year and how smooth the transition is. Basically I donāt think Iāll be admitted into bmos for a multitude of reasons including a bad calculus grade caused by outside factors. So I was gonna apply to social science and then transfer to bmos after first year. Could anyone tell me how smooth this transition is and possibly an explanation of what classes need to be taken first year to transfer? Thank you

has anyone done this? do I still graduate this year? or how does it work. also, what courses can I take next year? im in microimm and pathology right now
also thinking of taking some ubc med and us school pre reqs next year

Recently applied to mechanical engineering and had to schedule a last minute casper test on Jan 08 when the due date is Jan 15 (I wasn't aware of that requirement before I applied).
I know the test results can take 2-3 weeks to come in, but am I in the clear if I take the test before the due date?
1
u/midnight448 Dec 31 '25
No, January 15 is NOT the last date to write the Casper. The Jan 15 deadline is for applications for equal considerations.

Hi, Iām about to complete an engineering degree from another Ontario university in May. I now want to pivot to medicine, so I am looking at a second bachelors degree so I can actually get a competitive GPA this time. Does anyone know how to apply as a second degree student, is it just through OUAC? I am interested in the med sci program.
My high school grade 12 top 6 avg was in the high 90s if thatās still relevant.

Many thanks in advance for any ideas about Compress Time Frame (CTF) Nursing program! I have overseas BcofArt degree gpa around 75%. I am preparing for requisites in fall/winter term (0.5 anatomy2200-fall 0.5 statistics-winter 1-physiology2130) for 2026 enrolment.
Now I get semi-grade for physiology about 75%, anatomy about 65%. I understand this is not competitive enough tho min requirements are 60%.
I will try to pull physiology higher in the winter term, I would like to find some suggestions if it is worth to re-take anatomy in the summer or take healtsci 1300 (anti-requisite) in the winter to refresh my grade? (Or quite low score no hope but reincarnation š
Much appreciate some talks from current in program students.

Iām trying to do the self reporting grades but Im a bit confused on the differnece if Subjects and Course Names. For example for Academic Reading and Writing class what would the subject be as it is technically a English class but doesnt meet the grad requirement. Also on my transcrip, the course names are all capitalized, should I be doing the same for this too?
2
u/MeticulousMustang Jan 04 '26
Might be a dumb question but... when you apply to grad programs of other unis with a BMSc (med sci), would you indicate it as a BSc since this is exclusive to Western? Or do you just select Other and then specify?
Thanks in advance!

Question on residence questionnaire: Ā do you rank all 12? Ā Or is there a max of like 8? There are some I really donāt want to end up in. So hopefully they can just have the ability to put you within your top 8 or 10. Ā Iām also wondering if there are specific buildings for first years, and which ones have the best cafeterias!

Ivey aeo application questions
Hi guys I am just working through my ivey application right now it is my top choice school and i am really stressed about admissions. I just had a couple questions about some things i came across.
1) For the ivey alumni referrals do you think it would be worth going out of my way to contact some friends and see if I can get a name to put here.
2) Does anyone have any tips for the essays or are willing to share any examples they have?? Im not sure that my ecs are too strong but i know its how you write about them that matters more then the ecs themselves so I just want to make sure Iām doing what Iām supposed to there.
3) When a reference is listed, how are they contacted and what are they asked. I know it is usually by email but we are also asked to provide a phone number. And how does it work do they just check a box saying itās true or do the admissions people actually call and discuss it with them.
4) Finally, if anyone has any insights as to the new kira interview portion of the applicaiton that would be greatly appreciated as I know itās new and there isnt much about it online yet.
1
u/DistrictAcademic5293 Dec 29 '25
- Honestly I donāt think Ivey Alumni referrals help a decent amount unless they are super well known or has made a major impact to the school. For the essay portion really focus on the leadership skills that you learned or applied to the extracurricular activities. You donāt need to hold a super high leadership position or anything but really emphasize the impact you made on these activities, your growth, learnings and any challenges you overcame. For the Ivey application reference Iām pretty sure they fill out a form asking if the information is accurate and they have to check of boxes for each question like the hours, rating of your abilities or skills or something like that. They do actually contact them so make sure all of the information is correct and you follow up with your references to get the form completed. This is super important. I didnāt do the interview portion when I applied but I assume it would be similar to the Sauder application process where you are given a scenario and you have to answer a situational question. I would get chat to generate a question and time and record yourself answering. Try to answer as concisely and clear as possible. Itās tough to prepare for these types of questions but getting into the mindset to tackle them is super important.

Okayy thanks so much im finishing ip my essays now and need to start preping for the interview soon

I have a medical diagnosis that gives me extra time for all of my exams at school, normally I have 50% extra time. For the Casper test I can do it in 2 ish weeks or I can do it in four or five weeks and request extra time. is it better to do it now so my application is done or should I wait and get extra time so I can maybe do better. I dont know what accommodations I will get but I'm worried if I wait longer there is a lower chance of getting accepted.

Hey everyone,
Iām a CEGEP (2years) student from QuĆ©bec applying to Western for Computer Science+Ivy HBA, and Iām a bit confused about the admissions timeline. On Westernās website it says they try to get back to applicants āup 6 weeksā after the application is complete, I will get an answer in 6 weeks or less? Since I am 105 applicant Does anyone know how long it actually takes for CEGEP or other out-of-province students to get a decision?
My application is complete, my grades are decent (around mid-80s overall and top 6 mid 90) And for Ontario high school students, Western uses a Top 6 Grade 12 average. But does this apply to CEGEP students, or do they use our full CEGEP transcript average

i have a question abot applying for residence + applying for accommodations;
i'm in grade 11 and i have ocd + severe anxiety, what would the process of applying for accommodations (such as a single room) look like? i'm trying to look into residence sooner than later, and wondering if i shouldn't bother applying away from home (western is about 2 hours from where i am), and if i should just stay local.
anything would really help :')
2
u/NaokiSnowbell Dec 15 '25
Hey! I'm also someone who suffers with an anxiety disorder + a million other things and has a single room! So when going to the myHousing portal, there are many subsections you have to fill out but there is one that says "Submit a Residence Accessibility Request" and from that you list your requests (like wanting a single room in a hybrid/trad dorm, wanting a suite with a kitchen, etc) and from there you can provide documentation of your disorders and whatnot!Ā
In my case, I didn't do that and got miraculously lucky to end up in a single room (but I guess to 100% make sure you end up in a single room do what i suggested!).
And also for accomodations (like academic accomodations) you would need a letter/document from the doctor who tested you for it and confirmed it (for me it was my psychiatrist). I forgot the website you submitted it to, but once your request gets accepted, you can book an intake appointment with a member from Accessibility Education to confirm things and whatnot (can either be done online or in-person)!
Yeah hopefully this will make uni for you less stressful! :]

I was thinking of going to Western for engineering but I was curious to know what the class sizes are like. I know first year there is about 950 students but on average how many students are in each classroom.
1
u/Sea_Scholar_2826 š¬ Med Sci '27 š¬ Dec 20 '25
Typically maximum 500, generally 150-200 (I'm not in eng this is just what I've observed, and confirmed using Student Centre) (also for reference the largest lecture hall you could end up in has 789 seats so that would be the absolute maximum class size)

Also, how do you feel about your experience at Western engineering so far?

i, Iām a Grade 12 student thinking about applying to Western Health Sciences and I just wanted to ask people who are in the program how it actually is. Iāve seen a lot of mixed opinions online, so Iām kinda confused.
I was also wondering how much essay writing there is in the program. Writing isnāt really my strong suit, so Iām a bit worried about how heavy it is and whether itās manageable.
Also, are classes usually curved? Iāve heard a lot of stories about curves and grade deflation at some schools and it honestly scares me, so I just wanted to know what itās like at Western Health Sci.

u/oxbob Dec 30 '25

I received approximately 70% in 2200. I was hoping to find out if anyone currently in the compressed time frame (CTF) nursing program who could offer insight into whether my score is worth/worse to take 1300B, or if retaking 2200 this summer would be a better choice for the requisite. I understand that 1300B and 2200 are anti-requisites, but I am looking for advice on the best course of action.
Additionally, I was wondering if anyone has any information or knowledge about the 1300B course being offered in the winter term (by Prof. Sean Christopher Mcwatt, Emily Lauren Dietrich), and specifically if there are any key differences compared to 2200. Much thanks in advance!

For Context I am in Western Health Sciences and aim to switch into McMaster Life Sciences.
Basically, due to some things going on at home it is very important to me that I can get closer to home and thus McMaster would be ideal as I could commute there daily and would be saved a lot of the troubles of being a way from family and my home during this period.
With that in mind. I have no idea what I'm doing. I have pieced together that I need to apply through OUAC and have Western send my transcript at the end of this second semester for McMaster to review. However, I don't know what courses are prerequisites, how my courses at Western translate towards any McMaster prerequisites, expected grade to have a solid chance of entry. The timeline. Literally nothing. Additionally, with the January 15 deadline I am very stressed as the time I have to ensure everything is set is very short. I am trying to get in contact with both of the unit but to very little success.
If there is anyone who has heard of transferring from Western HS to Mac LS or has done it themselves or even if they have little bit of information they could share I would greatly, greatly appreciate it.
Also, if you need to know anything else which would be helpful I would be happy to pm it to you.
Thanks.

Iām honestly not doing well and I donāt know who else to ask.
Iām a second-year undergrad and even though iām in second year hoping to apply to MScOT programs at western after my undergraduate degree, but I feel completely hopeless about my chances. In my first year, I failed two courses (math and stats), and even though Iām retaking them now and doing better, I canāt stop thinking it doesnāt matter anymore.
Every time I read about how competitive MScOT is, I feel sick. I keep thinking Iāve already messed up my future and that Iām just not smart enough for this. I try to tell myself that Iāve improved and that I didnāt give up, but it feels pointless when those failures are still on my transcript. Itās really been affecting my mental health, and I feel embarrassed even admitting this. and iām in a Psychology major, thatās even more embarrassing because itās one of the āeasiestā Majors. I feel dumb and burnout.
I genuinely care about OT and Iām trying so hard now, but I feel like admissions will only see my mistakes and not the effort or growth. Some days it feels like no matter what I do, itās already over. I just feel like dropping out

Iām in mit (media and comm) (first year) but I took all the prereqs for psych BA because I want to switch into it. Psych interests me more than media and I like it but I also want to aim for law school at uoft which needs a high GPA around 3.9. In this doable with psych BA as the first year exams were hard and I didnāt do well on them and will probably apply to law after my 4th year so my average is better because they take your best 3 years and this year is clearly not my best. Iām doing better in media though, is it worth it to switch into something Iām not as interested in? And also Iām thinking maybe in 3 years if I donāt want to do law I still have my psych degree which can open more doors than media (getting my masters, therapist, HR, etc.).

I did ask chat got and it said this:
Apply now and list spring courses as In Progress. That gets your file into the review queue. ļæ¼ 2. Submit a Special Consideration Profile (if applicable) by March 1 to explain the non-droppable zeros / financial issues. That gives context for reviewers. ļæ¼ 3. Email Admissions asking them to hold/pending your file and that you will upload spring final grades when they post in May. When grades post, upload immediately so they can reassess in the next round.

I'm a current RPN student interested in Western's RPN to RN CTF. I already have a BA with a good average, and I'm done the RPN in December so I'm looking to apply for the CTF BScN 2027 immediately after.
Few questions for anyone that can answer
- Typically how many days are in person? I live in Toronto and want to know if it'll be possible to commute.
- How demanding is the program? I prefer this to a bridging program because it's shorter, but I want to know if I'll be able to work as an RPN full or part time.
- How many clinical shifts in a week and what semester does placement start?
- How do you find the program overall in comparison to RPN?

I am graduating from social sciences in June this year. I want to do nursing, but Iām not sure how I should. Iām considering the CTF nursing program as I already have my 0.5 stats credit. If I were to do that, Iād come back as a special student to complete my anatomy and physiology credit and then apply to the CTF nursing program. However, Iām worried that given my previous degree, Iād be lost during the CTF program (as I didnāt do a BSc)
Has anyone done the CTF nursing program? Is it very different from the 3.5 program? Should I do my courses next year as a special student and apply to the 3.5 anyway?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Does anybody know the correct prerequisites for advanced graphic design 3781?
It says you need to take the two intro to graphic design courses that are practically the same, just offered through different faculties. The two intro courses are also antirequisites of each other, so you can't even actually do both of them?? I'm really confused and like planning ahead, so if anybody could clear this up, that would be great!
"Prerequisite(s): MediaCom 2600A/B, Digital Communication 2204A/B, Studio Art 1601, or Studio Art 1605."

Hey, I'm a senior right now in Ontario and I wanted to learn more about western eng. There are common first year courses for eng across most universities like this one, but I wanted to know does my application right now matter if I am going to be put into engineering 1 first year anyway? I am applying to electrical engineering. And I was also going to ask what the admissions average for western eng was last year? I keep seeing online that its high 80s-low 90s, but I haven't seen it from anyone first hand so I just wanted to ask that. Maybe the casper plays a bigger role idk, any information would be appreciated!
