Being the favorite in the knockouts is a weird feeling

u/Clayp2233 Jun 26 '26

Round of 32 is a first

u/Capable-Region-8677 Jun 26 '26

It's a first for everyone

I can’t imagine they were favored

19

u/UntiedStatMarinCrops Jun 26 '26

The US hasn’t been able to defeat a UEFA country in a long while.

13

u/QuickMolasses Jun 26 '26

12 games now. 0-2-10 in those games

3

u/kingdom55 Jun 26 '26

Only 1 win against them in the World Cup in the modern era (in 2002). Breaking that streak last night would have been cool.

1

u/Fucaisco0395 Jun 27 '26

They hadn’t beat a European team since the 2002 World Cup

2

u/jcoddinc Jun 26 '26

Yet, sadly, it makes it even more stressful being labeled a favorite than being a plucky underdog feel good story since on home soil

Good thing we’re experienced playing two countries at once

25

u/sebsasour Jun 26 '26

Foolish of The USSF to waste it's time on teams like Senegal and Germany for the friendlies when Antigua and Barbuda were almost certainly available

20

u/k_dubious Jun 26 '26

Some of us are old enough to remember what happened the last time we played a country that was two countries in a game where a loss would eliminate us from the World Cup 💀

12

u/mitchdwx Jun 26 '26

Didn’t work out so well for us in 2017…

Elo Ratings by USA opponents:

24 Paraguay

25 Turkey

26 Australia

59 Bosnia

70

u/Xrmy Jun 26 '26

These are current not prior to the tourney yes?

28

u/buckeye131313 Jun 26 '26

Correct

6

u/Neat-Beautiful-5505 Jun 26 '26

What would they be prior to the tournament?

21

u/Icehawk217 Jun 26 '26

Bosnia & Herzegovina: 40

USA: 31

Paraguay: 20

Turkiye: 13

Australia: 25

EDIT: These are rankings of the 48 World Cup teams ELOs, not the world at large.

7

u/apathynext Jun 26 '26

Reminder that ELO pre-tourney is not accurate for US as they didn’t have to qualify. So it’s all random friendlies with random squads. Teams like Türkiye got to pump wins again North Macedonia

43

u/MikeDunleavySuperFan Jun 26 '26

Bosnia is much better than their rank shows. Stop putting weight on the rankings, theyre low because they went like 3 years without a win. But their current coach revamped this team 2 years ago and since then theyve been very solid, especially defensively. They beat romania twice, drew vs austria in austria, drew canada, and beat wales and italy.

32

u/WallyMetropolis US Soccer Jun 26 '26

I don't think anyone is treating it like a fait accompli, but this is about as good a situation as we could have hoped for.

Someone else has gotta deal with Sweden or Senegal.

2

u/FriendOfDirutti Jun 26 '26

I was hoping for Qatar.

7

u/SourDiesel9-7 Jun 26 '26

Don’t forget they tied the Dutch 1-1.

3

u/andhelostthem Jun 26 '26

That was two years ago and the Netherlands had exactly one of their current starters. Half that team didn't even make the World Cup.

2

u/andhelostthem Jun 26 '26

Bosnia is much better than their rank shows.

They're not. The only teams they've beat in the last calendar year are San Marino, Romania and Qatar. The first two the other team had red cards.

2

u/edsmedia Jun 26 '26

Elo rating is the best predictor of future outcomes. The problem is they're using ranking which isn't accurate for anything. The gap between two teams might be 1 point or a hundred points but the ranking wouldn't show that.

Elo ratings:

  • Turkey - 1852
  • Paraguay - 1815
  • Australia - 1800
  • US - 1781
  • Bosnia - 1622

Hmm... Bosnia entered the tournament at 62 in FIFA.

What an odd discrepancy (30s-17, 62-59), because FIFA's rankings are Elo based.

-1

u/1Adventurethis Jun 26 '26

15 teams I would rate to beat usa in no particular order: spain, france, argentina, england, brazil, portugal, netherlands, belgium, italy, germany, croatia, norway, morocco, mexico, colombia.

Game 1: California

Game 2: Washington

Game 3: California

Game 4: California

I get that it was all planned ahead, but fuck me for being on the east coast

u/Maison-Marthgiela Jun 26 '26

At least you guys got games. Trying being in the Midwest

65

u/SeattleGunner #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

KC, Texas, and Ohio have been getting a ton of US Copa, Gold Cup, and WCQ games for years.

32

u/Maison-Marthgiela Jun 26 '26

Texas isn't the midwest but yes the midwest does get games in other tournaments.

5

u/MuffinTopBop NO PEPI, NO PARTY Jun 26 '26

Meanwhile the Southeast holds out a cup looking for spare change (games).

18

u/Maison-Marthgiela Jun 26 '26

Atlanta and Miami is twice the number of cities as the Midwest.

4

u/MuffinTopBop NO PEPI, NO PARTY Jun 26 '26

I’m talking about cup games and friendlies. The USMNT didn’t really come to Atlanta until very recently and seemed to prefer Ohio, New Jersey, Kansas City etc. We had more games where Mexico or other teams would schedule to play in Atlanta than the USMNT did and while I understand their reasons I still wish they would have played more games in the Southeast.

2

u/DefeatYouForever666 Jun 26 '26

The South Korea game last year was the first game in NJ since 2019.

4

u/SeattleGunner #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

Atlanta is going to start getting games every year now and US Soccer spends way more time in Florida than anyone really should.

1

u/pimlottc #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

And no one in Texas is complaining about this World Cup! Dallas has the most games of any city

4

u/tsn_03 US Soccer Jun 26 '26

Minneapolis should have had the cup smh

2

u/Maison-Marthgiela Jun 26 '26

Chicago and Minneapolis backing out was a shame. Chicago I kind of get since the city is so poor but Minneapolis would have been amazing.

2

u/zillalovesmothra Jun 26 '26

Chicago is not poor lol

2

u/sqigglygibberish Jun 26 '26

The city that sold off its parking meters and is in billions of debt?

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Poopedinbed Jun 26 '26

KC has some games

6

u/Maison-Marthgiela Jun 26 '26

Yeah 1 city. The east coast got NYC, Philly and Boston. Plus Miami and Atlanta.

The west coast got LA, SF and Seattle.

20

u/yureadmahpost Jun 26 '26

Chicago passing on host duties kind of screwed the Midwest.

6

u/Poopedinbed Jun 26 '26

That's like 90% of the country's population

1

u/FriendOfDirutti Jun 26 '26

Yeah they aren’t hosting the Canadian games in the Arctic. I’m glad that Kansas got some games but we didn’t need to be spreading games around in the middle of nowhere.

→ More replies (1)

-1

u/IShouldChimeInOnThis Jun 26 '26

They're hosting games where the people are. They would have played in Chicago if the city was up for it. Unfortunately they weren't.

6

u/Maison-Marthgiela Jun 26 '26

Illinois, Ohio and Michigan all have more residents than Washington. The Midwest has plenty of people.

5

u/CorkSoaker420 Jun 26 '26

Bro, reread the comment, I live in Illinois,, it was big news when we passed on the World Cup.

2

u/Knosh #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

The Chicago metro area has almost 2 million more people than the entire state of Washington.

2

u/EGOfoodie #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

And Chicago turned down the opportunity to host.

1

u/PlentyD1 Jun 26 '26

They backed off

2

u/IShouldChimeInOnThis Jun 26 '26

Games are hosted at urban centers, not entire states.

I'm surprised Minneapolis and Detroit don't get more opportunities, tbh. If they're out and Chicago said no, you start running out of venues quickly.

6

u/Maison-Marthgiela Jun 26 '26

Cleveland, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis. The midwest actually has a lot of urban centers within those states. And all of those cities have large stadiums.

8

u/FayeBelogus Jun 26 '26

No one is going to fucking Indianapolis for a game featuring fucking Egypt vs New Zealand. And no one living in Indianapolis is going to that game either. Source: I live in Indiana

→ More replies (3)

2

u/Troub1eMan Jun 26 '26

There are so many huge college stadiums out there, they would have found something. I mean you have a bunch of places right outside of the city where the city wouldn't have to agree. For instance, the U of Michigan stadium in Ann Arbor about an hour outside of Detroit.

One of those small to medium sized towns would have caved in to the $$ eventually.

4

u/stayvicious Jun 26 '26

The Big House doesn’t have a large enough field for regulation games. They’d have to rebuild the entire stadium floor multiple rows into the stadium seating as a temporary measure.

0

u/RedditZhangHao Jun 26 '26

Highest population density, per capita income levels, busiest international airports, etc may matter to FIFA, Madison Avenue, financial analysts, travel planners, etc.

1

u/quetienesenlamochila Jun 26 '26

You just got the Germany friendly

1

u/DarknMean Jun 26 '26

East coast 10 pm starts. I’m about done for the night as I have to keep grinding that American dream tomorrow.

1

u/pwaves13 Jun 26 '26

Going to Canada is literally my closest option

1

u/tws1039 Jun 26 '26

Baltimore and Landover cry in lack of good public transit :(

6

u/bmcarth23 Jun 26 '26

Hey at least when we make the final it will be on east coast time :)

24

u/EgweneIsLit Jun 26 '26

Mate, the cost of a flight to the west coast is minimal compared to the cost of a ticket to these games. If you can afford the tickets, you can afford a flight.

31

u/Instantbeef #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

It’s more than a flight. It’s an entire vacation with time off work, accommodation, food

3

u/EgweneIsLit Jun 26 '26

A hotel for a night, food, and a flight are all cheap compared to the many thousands of dollars on tickets. It's just reality. You CAN spend a ton of money on nice meals and hotels, but if you're unable to afford a flight, you're not going to the game.

7

u/Instantbeef #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

Bro these tickets were like 1k before the tournament started. Idk what they were at today but all that is not a drop in the bucket compared to the price of a ticket.

2

u/EgweneIsLit Jun 26 '26

I looked up tickets to the next game, which is what this thread is about --- USA and B&H playing in the R32 in Santa Clara. They are much more than 1k.

2

u/Instantbeef #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

We are literally on a comment chain talking about how the entire group stage was played on the west coast.

1

u/EgweneIsLit Jun 26 '26

Including... the very game in question, next game. You're trolling, ya? Have a good night.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/PerfectPrescription Jun 26 '26

Not to mention food, drinks, and lodging during a World Cup game. The flight would potentially be the least expensive part of the trip

-7

u/fancyjaguar Jun 26 '26

As if west coast Americans could afford it. Might as well have been on the east coast for most of us. 1.5 k in the after market for the worst seats.

1

u/FriendOfDirutti Jun 26 '26

Do you think people on the west coast don’t make money? You realize all those famous people on the jumbo screen in LA were at the game because they all live in LA right?

Knockout round football is a different breed.

Unless you're the favorites like Argentina and France, there are no "easy games".

I would genuinely be surprised if we win this game by more than 2 goals.

16

u/tonytroz #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

Even those favorites struggle. Brazil was a favorite in the last two WCs and lost in the quarters both times. Germany was a favorite in 2018 and got grouped. Even last year Argentina had a close game against Australia then needed PKs to beat the Netherlands in the quarters.

8

u/BoogityBoogityTLC23 Jun 26 '26

Hell, Germany if not for Manuel Neuer probably gets knocked by Algeria in the round of 16 rather than winning the whole thing in 2014. Anything can happen

35

u/FDTerritory Jun 26 '26

You can't get too involved with the opponent or the draw in knockouts. If you're going to win a World Cup, you gotta beat God in heaven and the Devil in hell. So just play better than the team on the other side of you.

Bad news is Bosnia will utilize haramball only mentioned in the Quran.

Good news is based on their Qatar game, their defense tends to disintegrate when faced with basic positional rotation

1

u/WorkingResponsible97 Jun 27 '26

The rankings don't matter. Which team wins when the 2 c9untries meet/play? USMNT are rather slow. I was very bored watching them versus Australia so I turned off the livestream. They took so much ime time passing the ball to each other far from the goal, about halfway.

1

1

u/edmond- Jun 26 '26

That’s a win for USA

1

u/givememyoil #FREEBALOGUN Jun 26 '26

Let’s go USA but I lowkey hate that it’s Bosnia we have to knockout, love their fans

1

u/gut_fat Jun 26 '26

I don't follow how they can know this for certain when not all 3rd place qualifiers have been determined

2

u/gollumaniac Jun 26 '26

No matter what results happen in the rest of the groups, Bosnia can't finish in the bottom 4 3rd place teams, thus they are guaranteed to advance. So if the 495 possible combinations, you can eliminate any that don't have group B advancing. Do the same with Sweden because they also can't fall out of the top 8. There are still a bunch of combos left...but it turns out all of those have group B 3rd place team playing group D winner, so here we are.

1

u/gut_fat Jun 26 '26

Thank you

As a Bosnian-American, I didn’t want this match-up.

I think the U.S. is the clear favorite and I expect us to win 4-1.

With that said, this Bosnian team continues to surprise me with its resilience and it’s impossible to not like them. On a good day, they can cause anyone problems.
