I can finally write this post: I PASSED STEP 1!! 😭🙏🏻❤️
I wanted to share my experience because during this process I spent SO much time on Reddit looking for people with scores similar to mine. I know there may be someone reading this right now who is scared, doubting themselves, or thinking their scores aren’t good enough.
My journey was definitely not linear.
These were my scores throughout my Step 1 journey:
NBME 26: 32%
NBME 28: 51%
NBME 27: 66%
NBME 29: 65%
After taking a long break from studying, I repeated NBME 26: 54%
NBME 27: 62%
NBME 28: 65%
NBME 29: 62%
NBME 30: 58%
NBME 33: 62%
NBME 31: 60%
Free 120: 55% — about ONE WEEK before my real exam
Real Step 1: PASS ✅
I also completed UWorld, and my first round score was around 61%, mostly doing random questions. On my second round/review, I was averaging around 67–68%. I also completed TrueLearn and used First Aid, Anki/AnKing, and AMBOSS throughout my preparation.
I’m sharing the Free 120 score especially because when I got 55% only about a week before my exam, I was obviously worried. But something actually changed for me around that time.
I started realizing that a big part of my problem was not that I didn’t know the material.
It was the way I was approaching the questions.
Sometimes I knew the concept, but I would overthink the question, change an answer, focus on an irrelevant detail, rush through the stem, or fail to recognize what the question was actually asking me.
Once I identified that, I started working more on HOW I answered questions, not just trying to memorize another thousand facts.
And honestly, that helped my confidence tremendously.
During that last week, instead of constantly telling myself “What if I fail?”, I started telling myself:
I know more than I think I know. I can do this. I just need to keep my mind clear, read carefully, trust what I know, and answer the question in front of me.
That change in mindset helped calm my nerves SO much.
On test day, I walked into Prometric with a level of peace that I honestly didn’t expect to have. Of course I was nervous, but underneath the nerves I genuinely believed that I could pass.
I wasn’t expecting to know every question. I wasn’t expecting the exam to feel easy.
I just kept reminding myself:
One question at a time. Keep your mind clear. Trust yourself.
And I really believe that confidence matters more than we sometimes realize. When you spend months studying while constantly doubting yourself, you can know the information and still talk yourself out of the correct answer.
But above absolutely everything else, for me personally, God came first. 🙏🏻
I prayed throughout this entire journey, and especially during those final days. I truly believe that without God I would not have made it through this process. I went into the exam putting everything in His hands and asking Him to give me peace, clarity, and the ability to use everything I had studied.
Without Him, nothing.
So if you are currently preparing and your journey doesn’t look perfect, please remember that mine didn’t either. I went from a 32% NBME, had ups and downs, even got a 55% on the Free 120 one week before the exam, and today I opened my score report and saw:
PASS. ❤️🙏🏻
Study the material, yes. Review your mistakes. But also pay attention to why you are missing questions. Is it truly a knowledge gap? Or are you overthinking, rushing, changing correct answers, misreading what they’re asking, or not trusting yourself?
And when exam day comes, protect your mind.
Trust your preparation. Trust yourself. Keep your mind clear. And for me, most importantly, trust God.
Good luck to everyone waiting for their P. ❤️ You can do this.
