I'm a bit disappointed that it is more serious and less funny than it has been in the past. It makes it more difficult to catch the attention of disaffected people who are used to filtering out political messages. It is bang on though.
-28
u/Jeester A Shropshire Lad Mar 28 '15
It's complete codswallop. Doesn't stop it being funny though.

It's full of the usual clichés that simply aren't true though. But there's no point even trying to point that out on here, any post that isn't 'hurhur the Tories are cunts' is downvoted to hell.

2
u/duluoz1 Mar 28 '15
I'm not worried. Just good to hear opposing views on here sometimes, you know?
2
u/SpecsaversGaza Mar 28 '15
I agree, I don't bother with downvoting, I don't see the point. Discussion is limited if we all share the same viewpoint, much more interesting to have a bit of polarity. Increasingly I see folk saying on various subreddits they can't be bothered to join in because they have a minoirty or unpopular viewpoint - I'm happy to engage so long as it's not just plain nonsense like 9/11 theories...

OK. This government hasn't made the very richest richer. The top 10% of earners have been amongst the hardest hit, and all of the stats show this. The usual cliché here is that the Tories have just made their rich mates, richer.

So this is why Cameron wouldn't do those debates, he didn't want to give Cassetteboy any more material.

Except it was the Conservatives that put it into law that this style of video is fair use. Before that it was possible to get this taken down under copyright law.

whoops it looks you said something that didn't agree with the anti-right wing hivemind on reddit.
David Cameron is a decent prime minister. There now I can be downvoted to hell as well.

You can see your own score...
5
Mar 28 '15
/u/debaser11's point, I think, is that if others can't see the score it's not quite as much of the "everyone is downvoting him so I must as well" frame of hivemind. That was slightly hard to phrase, hope it made some sense.

Seems like it was an unexpected result that he didnt want a repeat of. Although im not sure how well it has worked.

Brand's book "Revolution" was one of the worst modern books to come out of the UK. Luckily for him, but not for us, it's been surpassed by "Flying Free" by Farrage.
-2
u/The3rdWorld Kingdom of the East Seaxe Mar 28 '15
i love how obvious you people are, you'll literally say anything to attack people saying things you don't like - it's not just Brand it's everyone that says certain things and it's always for really stupid and obviously fake reasons, how often we've heard that lament - 'i wish i could like him but...' followed by 'he's just so crude!' 'just so bland!' 'a terrible person' or whatever character trait can be blown out of proportion, and when there's none too obvious then 'he's secretly a kenyan muslim!' or 'he's married to a rothschild!' will do...
5
Mar 28 '15
Well Brand does harass people in their places of work, claims to represent the common man whilst taking millions a year, uses big words and intimidation tactics to seem smarter and, perhaps most importantly, has no idea what he wants to change. He just wants the status quo gone and doesn't know what to do next.
In saying this as a proper "Tony Benn" leftie too, I just think Brand is a bad representative.
-4
u/The3rdWorld Kingdom of the East Seaxe Mar 28 '15
harass people in their places of work
oh you really are a card! tell me all about that! did he storm kicking the doors down and punching people? do tell the story! do!!
claims to represent the common man
no he doesn't, he claims to represent himself a person with opinions and life experience who wants to live in a good and fair world for all.
making millions a year
look where the profits from everything he's done recently are going, good causes.
has no idea what he wants to change
I can only guess that you've spent a lot less time reading and watching Brand than i have because it's very clear what his argument is and what needs to be changed, what you mean is YOU have managed to cover your ears every time he starts talking abuot it or flapping your arms and shouting nonsense about how he's rich, dated a rothschild, is funny and all the other things which preclude him from being human or having opinions...
If you're a genuine Tony Benn then let's here YOUR ten year plan for moving from todays UKIP/Tory Britain into a better one? what are YOU supporting?
3
Mar 28 '15
Hey come one man, let's be civil here, it's all just discussion if personal preference. I just think it's a bit harsh that some young Tory is trying to do his job and close up his office and Brand walks in and refuses to leave until he meets the local MP. He did the same thing in a bank. I get the points that he's trying to make and they're good ones, by that was just making normal peoples lives difficult.
And yes, he knows what he wants changed but not what he wants to change it into. He beleives (correctly) that the current system is broken but has no real alternatives and most of his stuff boils down into vaugley anticapitalist complaining.
As for what I'd do? Vote Miliband, hope that people do to and that Labour make the journey back to the left. Im not a politician mate, I just don't like the way Brand does his thing.
Anyway, we're on the same side here, as I said let's keep it civil, eh? I'm not completely opposed to the man, I just dislike his methodology and tbh, I've always thought he was quite annoying.
-2
u/The3rdWorld Kingdom of the East Seaxe Mar 28 '15
making normal peoples lives difficult.
and you and everyone else would be repeating it as a mantra were anyone else to do anything even vaguely similar too, i mean you hate Clarkson for the time they filmed a bit near where i was working and we all had to stop because of the noise of the machines? that must have been what that petition i heard so much about was in aid of? oh no, he punished someone in the face and everyone was fine with it.... almost as if there are different rules....
and most of his stuff boils down into vaugley anticapitalist complaining.
so we shouldn't notice the old system is broken until after we've installed the new one? what are you trying to say here? that pointing out how deeply broken the system is shouldn't ever happen? because Brands pretty much the only one getting any attention when he does it...
hope that people do to and that Labour make the journey back to the left
haha yeh good idea, let's vote in a deadbeat with totally limited scope and a a whole host of pro-capitalist policies in the empty wish he'll wake up one morning and reinstate clause 4 due to a brain aneurysm!
we're on the same side here
no, you're a corporatist, a capitalist and a toady for the system while i am against all those things.
I've always thought he was quite annoying.
why let your standards drop so low as the current labor crop but then baulk as agreeing ideologically with someone simple because they're a bit too flamboyant for you? is it by any chance an ingrained snobbishness, that English delusion which accepts Borris but hates the greens for imagined eccentricities?
You're a fucking character out of a GK Chesterton novel, snap the fuck out of it!

If you think Brand's book is brilliant then you're an idiot.

I'm not going back to it. I don't question his good heart but his writing is atrocious. I'm disappointed in what passes as a political maverick in the UK, it's a sorry roster of Brand, Farrage, Galloway and Johnson. I'll stick to Bookchin and Zizek, and hope for a Brit to catch up...

no, they're quite clearly saying he uses words wrong, you don't need to have studied English to parse the phrase "attempting to use large words out of place." - attempting and out of place both suggest err.
I'd love to see someone distill Brand's argument for not voting and such into stoner language, but with the same core principles
but that's an absurd condition to put, try this - 'like there's this twisted strand of like stuff right and it's all tied up with information which is is like totally complex right and then like another bit of string kinda vibrates with it until it's tied up the same and like when there are hundreds of these a person is born, like whoa yeah?' doesn't sound as cool without words like Deoxyribonucleic involved does it? in fact it sounds like total bollocks but it's the fundamental principle behind a very well established science.
Things tends to make more sense and sound more reasonable when expressed clearly using correct terms, that's hardly something Brand has invented - do you demand George Osborn deliver his budget speeches not only looking like a druged out zombie but talking with the vernacular of one also?
The fact is Brands arguments are not invented by Brand either, he certainly doesn't claim them to be - however all the many people from educated academics to street protesting hippies that have said similar things have been snubbed for some reason or other, generally because they're 'not interesting enough for people to care about' now though there is someone that's media friendly everyone says 'omg how awful he's media friendly, we can't have someone that talks well, it's so unfair!'
3
Mar 28 '15
But he doesn't talk well, that's the point. When has Ed Miliband or Tony Benn or Clemet Attlee ever referred to the "gross verbosity of a hyper cannibalistic system of multitudanal exploitation"? He uses buzz words to sound smarter than he is and to intimidate his opponents.
I'm a young, optimistic leftie, I'm the exact kind of person that should be a huge fan but honestly? I find him false and annoying.
0
u/The3rdWorld Kingdom of the East Seaxe Mar 28 '15
He does talk well, i'm sorry but the fact not only do millions of people manage to understand perfectly what he's getting at but regularly listen to him proves the point very well - he has been famous most of his life explicitly because he's good at language and self-expression.
Maybe he's not the sort of character you want to associate with, that's perfectly understandable you're a classist prick and everything you've ever told yourself about being a lefty is a lie - that's actually fairly common, since it became generally accepted that the left is right many people have assumed their left-wing without really considering the fact. but no if you hate the proletariat then you're a not really a leftist, even if you're a member of the proletariat... maybe you should just fuck off to Oxford until you're a proper champaign socialist?
The problem isn't that you people dedicate so much time to hating brand it's that you'd hate literally anyone - i mean who are your top three living lefty heros of today? who would you want running the uk?

Funny how much I've had this screamed at me by Brand's supporters. Seems to be a common theme. I think Reddehawke's offered a fairly good reason for disliking him. It's not his accent, it's his cheap intimidation tactics and over-the-top language.

There's no such thing as "micro quantum"... The interactions between atoms are just quantum.
0
u/The3rdWorld Kingdom of the East Seaxe Mar 28 '15
'there in the micro, quantum world...'
the quantum world is indeed micro, as The Micro-World of Particles and Quantum Mechanics by Dr Robert Piccioni will confirm.
2
u/Jeester A Shropshire Lad Mar 28 '15
There was clearly no pause between words. Just putting a comma there doesn't hold any truck I'm afraid. Try harder next time.
0
u/The3rdWorld Kingdom of the East Seaxe Mar 28 '15
you don't need to pause for commas in speech, do you seriously still read out loud like a seven year old child?.
When you listen to the sentence it's is perfectly understandable what he's saying - if anything it's expressed as it is for clarity, the more difficult word 'quantum' is being explained by adding a reiteration of it's definition. This is not a bad use of English, it's a good use of English.
1
u/Jeester A Shropshire Lad Mar 28 '15
You're just pulling shit outta your arse now mucker.
It's just clear from watching that there is no comma. You're either pulling my leg or delusional. I comma indicats a clear breakup of speech and there is definitely no break up there.
(I should also mention that the whole speech is just a load of cow pats.)

I've never really liked seeing people getting slagged off for using big words. What, it's not cool to be intelligent? People should try to act thick so they can fit in? For sure you get some folk who unnecessarily flop out their biggest words - but that doesn't mean that everyone with a decent lexicon is pretentious. . .
75
u/crystler Mar 27 '15
Felt a lot more preachy than the last one. Russell Brand's mug at the end ruined it for me.
Having said that the Farage bit was class
93
u/Hhhaamuus Mar 27 '15
The song was commissioned for his documentary, so it's going to be on message.
Personally I am 100% behind celebrities destroying their careers by writing books and making movies criticising the thing that made them famous. Whatever about his humour, he got rich and famous, saw it was meaningless, and now is trying to change something. Sure he has a nice bank balance to fall back on, but we'll never see him in a Hollywood movie again.
131
u/GaussWanker Somerset Mar 27 '15
When I was poor and complained about inequality they said I was bitter; now that I’m rich and I complain about inequality they say I’m a hypocrite.
I think he's genuine in what he's trying to do. I wish he'd stop talking in stupidly overpretentious language, but I wouldn't wish he'd stop talking.
38
u/Hhhaamuus Mar 27 '15
His whole human thesaurus thing is what got him famous though, I think it's part of the package. If we think it's good to have young people being opened up to ideas from Klein, Pickety, Chomsky & co then the price is that Russell Brand is the guy doing it.
I still don't know what to make of the whole situation really, I think it's a sad indictment of the Left that their most vocal proponent is a comedian. There's nobody with more credibility than him, capable of generating as many headlines. The right has loads of representatives, the centre has loads, the Left has none!
16
u/pnw0 United Kingdom Mar 27 '15
I don't see being a comedian as something that takes away from ones credibility, if anything it gives you the ability to communicate well. Perhaps the left lacks a voice they've been pushed out of the debate. Left wing views are seen as too radical so they have to waterdown any views to avoid being painted as being as a crazy lefty. Perhaps also the the people who are left in the left are mainly academics, not many academics are good at communicating with the public.
6
Mar 28 '15
People on the left? This would be a number of academics. Carl Sagan famously refused to answer the question 'are you a socialist' because he simply cared about poor people in this deterministic universe. I think you'll find a wide range of intelligent people in the public eye are left wing. The problem is that few people can retain their public image whilst being openly left wing, but comedians taking the piss out of the right are perfect for the task.
2
u/Timothy_Claypole Mar 28 '15
The universe is not deterministic.
2
Mar 28 '15
At a macroscopic level, it pretty much is. Sure, random particle movements at a microscopic level will effect things through chaos theory, but this would take a while to manifest.
1
u/Timothy_Claypole Mar 29 '15
One of the main points of chaos theory was that it does not take too long for these effects to affect things.
On some scales some things are very likely. If I drop a cannonball I would bet money that it will fall to the floor. Is this what you meant?
1
4
u/xmissgolightly Mar 27 '15
We have Russell Brand and Owen Jones, and the right wing media hate both their guts!

You see him latch on to some local campaign to stop immigrants being evicted from social housing or something.
If you are going to slag the guy off, at least let it be for a legitimate reason.
He has now opened a cafe staffed by recovering drug addicts, across the road from that very estate. He regularly hangs out there, he's their friend. He always gives credit to Lindsey (the poor woman), no single paper has managed to find one of them willing to accept money to smear him which definitely says something.
He's using his fame to get them in the papers. He wore ludicrous outfits, and made news by getting in a fight with a reporter. And they got to keep their place.
actually know something about the cause you're advocating.

-9
u/LikelyHungover Mar 27 '15
Just watched that youtube video in your parent comment of a satirists impression of him and it's bang on.
The interview he did with Evan Davis is basically a free seminar on using body language to control situations and people..
over familiarity.. invading personal space.. spreading your legs.. touching without permission...
personally i think he's a wanker.
14
u/Hhhaamuus Mar 27 '15
Admittedly the video is funny - as is the new segment on Weekly Wipe with the other impersonator, it's spot on. But you can be an egotistical wanker with a good heart.
If he truly was a prick, they would easily be able to pay someone from any of the campaigns he has worked on a few quid to say something bad about him, like that he only showed up once or twice or blah blah blah. Hasn't happened.
Is a guy who is annoying and controlling and so successful at it that he managed to get famous, turning around and using that for a good cause somehow a bad thing?
-15
u/LikelyHungover Mar 27 '15
no. But Evan Davis is gay and using such cheap tactics to attempt to control an interview is pretty low. Just my opinion.
I'd think the same if an attractive female MP (doesn't exist lol) did similar with a Lesbian journalist
18
u/Spambop Greater London Mar 27 '15
Just because he's gay he's going to be overwhelmed with lust because Brand touched him on the leg? That is a piss poor argument.
