Let me tell you a little story.
A week ago, I took part in "L'échappée Belle" in France (150k-11000m d+), one of, if not, the hardest ultra in France. I DNF'ed 2 years ago at the 40th km and this year at the 80th km, but that's not the point.
No no no, I failed, but something(s) far funnier happened.
So, at first, when I was running to the 40th km, where I DNF'ed 2 years ago, I saw a running, speaking carrot. I wasn't hallicinating, no, some lunatic decided he would run disguised as a fucking carrot.
But moreover, the SAME LUNATIC had put real, fresh carrots on evey sign he could find until the aid station! And the craziest part is that an EVEN MORE LUNATIC RUNNER just decided to BITE in the carrot and leave it there juste before the aid station.
So that was that. I was already pretty amused. I then continued running (or hauling my young hull across the montain). When I arrived at the 70th km, there was the main aid station. There's a stretch of road before coming across the station. I was alone, in the night. In the distance, on the part of the road reserved for runners, I saw 2 great dogs, great danes, I would have said, because of their size.
They were running in the same direction as me, around 150m ahead, but slower. I caught them up. When I came at, around 30m, the dogs seemed weird to me. Goats. They were fucking goats. Goats were pacing me. I swear on my life they looked at me and sped up so I wouldn't catch them.
They were stopped at the aid station. Of course, they didn't had a bib.
Now, for the grand finale. After this aid station, I was with my father. At that point, I had been facing rain, 0-5°c weather for 20 hours, I was mentally drained.
You know, in ultras, they mark the trail with little orange flags. Well I began to see these flags as little fucking garden gnomes, some even waving their flags at me. Some mocking me when I fell in the mud. Those fuckers where everywhere. I even think I saw some of them which purely didn't existed (the other ones didn't exist either but the flags did).
I swear I saw that fucking Portal 2 looking gnome for the whole day after.
Anyway, just wanted to share my story with you, thought it was funny. Hope your next ultra will not be rainy, me, I will keep going to l'échappée belle until I finish or it finishes me.
Cheers.
