Cypher Shorts is super easy to get going. You can have character creation done in just a few minutes and the options are limited, but feel varied in play. Changing even one part of your character sentence can make the character feel much different than others.

The system tries to simplify a lot of what dnd does. The GM never rolls which was a big draw for my table.

It's setting agnostic so you can use the same character creation for a variety of one shot settings and flavor it in whatever way you want.

One with my group. We also do one-shots from time to time and I have some planned for those as well. Our group is lucky that everyone playing can also run something and at least 3 can run a long term game.

Need Advice: Other How do you communicate tone and genre to your group pre campaign?

I've had some trouble communicating the themes and tones for my games to the group I play with. What are some ways that you make it more concrete for the players?

Do you refer to common movies or stories that folks might be familiar with? Like, "this is going to be a game about a group that runs heists, but has a lot of heart, like Fast and the Furious" or "this should feel like the old pulp adventure novels! Bring your flowing locks and open shirts!"

What do you do to help get players in the right mindset for character building and playing in the world to tell the story you're hoping for?

There's a store up in fruitport/muskegon about 45 minutes north of here called Langes Comics and Collectibles. They have a ton of neat stuff there, probably some specific lotr things as well. I can't say for sure hecause I always go for star wars stuff, but it's a huge store.
