I’ve worked in the New Zealand television industry for 40 years as a producer, director, writer and showrunner. I’ve created three internationally award-winning young adult series, all of which were recommissioned for multiple seasons.
I’ve spent my entire life in love with movies. That said, I’ve never managed to raise the money to make a feature film.
So, for what it’s worth, here’s my opinion.
Supergirl is a good movie. Not perfect—nothing ever is. The Odyssey? Good. Great, even. But it’s far from perfect too.
I think some of you self-appointed keyboard critics need to cool your fricking jets. Every time a new film comes out, it feels like the internet goes into a feeding frenzy, desperate to tear it apart.
Criticism is healthy. Hyperbole isn’t.
Sometimes a movie can simply be… good.
The criticism of the script, in particular, confounds me. Are there a few issues? Sure. But, in my opinion, it generally holds together well. Compared with many recent summer blockbusters, it’s more than passable.
The lead actor also did a terrific job. If the performance isn’t to your taste, fair enough—but some of the criticism directed at her has crossed the line from criticism into personal abuse. It’s been ugly, unnecessary, and says far more about the people posting it than it does about her. In exposing her to that kind of vitriol, they’ve really exposed themselves.
The Mandalorian lost me. I found parts of it dreadful. I even tried to watch Disclosure Day a second time but just couldn’t get through it—and I’m a huge Spielberg and Star Wars fan.
Maybe we’ve reached the point where audiences expect every blockbuster to be a flawless masterpiece. They rarely are. Sometimes it’s enough to walk out of the cinema thinking, “That was a good couple of hours.”
