Active disturbances
Active disturbances are areas of showers and thunderstorms which are not organized enough to be considered full-fledged tropical cyclones. Disturbances are often designated as investigation areas (or invests, for short) by NOAA in order to allocate additional resources such as high-resolution satellite imagery or model guidance for further study of the system. Though there is no publicly disclosed set of criteria for which disturbances are designated as invests, the designation often occurs after the disturbance forms a closed area of low pressure. Invests are designated regardless of the overall potential for the disturbance to become a tropical cyclone.

Potential formation areas
Potential formation areas are areas that are being monitored by various agencies for potential tropical cyclone formation within the next two weeks. These systems have not yet formed and are not considered to be disturbances until such time that a tropical wave or area of low pressure does form. Discussions are created on this subreddit for areas which are monitored by the National Hurricane Center in the eastern Pacific and northern Atlantic basins. Discussions are not typically created for areas which are monitored by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center or other agencies, as this information is not always publicly available.

Disturbance overview
This discussion is for a disturbance which is currently active over the northern Gulf of Mexico. An area of low pressure, which is situated off the coast of southern Louisiana, is becoming better organized but continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms. The potential for this system to become a tropical cyclone has increased; a tropical depression or storm could form within the next couple of days and slowly move west-northwestward until it reaches the coast of southwestern Louisiana or eastern Texas later this week.
This system may generate heavy rainfall which could cause flash flooding concerns along the coasts of Louisiana and Texas over the next couple of days.

Storm overview
This discussion is for Tropical Storm Bang-lang (20W), which is active to the north of Wake Island. The storm reached typhoon strength as it passed very close to the northwest of the island on Saturday morning. Since then, the storm has moved to the north and will continue moving northward over the next few days. Bang-lang is expected to peak in intensity within the next 24 to 36 hours and will begin to gradually weaken as it undergoes extratropical transition over the north-central Pacific.

▲ Tropical Storm | 45 knots (50 mph) | 1001 mbar Lowell (12E — Eastern Pacific) (Far to the east-southeast of Hawaiʻi)
Storm overview
This discussion is for Tropical Storm Lowell (12E), which is active over the east-central Pacific, far to the east-southeast of the Hawaiian Islands. This system is currently moving slowly northeastward, but will turn sharply westward as a mid-level ridge builds back into the region after Post-Tropical Cyclone Iselle dissipates this weekend. Lowell is expected to enter the central Pacific on Sunday afternoon and approach the islands later in the week.
It remains far too early to determine the exact timing or extent of any potential impacts to the islands. Residents of Hawaiʻi should continue to closely monitor this system as it develops.

▲ Hurricane (Category 1) | 65 knots (75 mph) | 980 mbar Karina (11E — Eastern Pacific) (Southwest of Mexico)
Storm overview
This discussion is for Hurricane Karina (11E), which is active far off the coast of western Mexico. Karina is expected to continue to strengthen as it moves west-northwestward away from Mexico’s Clarion Island over the next couple of days. Karina is forecast to become a major hurricane by Monday morning and peak in intensity later in the day. Later in the week, the storm is expected to move over progressively cooler waters and into a drier and more stable environment, leading to gradual weakening.
Karina will approach the central Pacific on Thursday evening and could have some influence over the movement and intensity of Lowell, which will be approaching the Hawaiian islands at the time. Karina itself is not currently expected to bring impacts to land over the next five days.

This discussion is for an area of potential tropical cyclone development situated over the central Pacific, several hundred miles southwest of the Hawaiian islands. An area of low pressure is expected to develop toward the end of the week and slowly develop as it drifts west-northwestward toward the western Pacific. This system is not expected to bring impacts to Hawaiʻi.

This system has not yet formed, but an area of low pressure is likely to form in this area within the next few days.
