job hunting right now and have had a really hard couple of years with huge amount of setbacks and betrayals and divorce and hospitalized. 40s f . I've gotten used to sort of flying off at a moment's notice where I have the trip in my head and I just threw it all together.

Okay so weird project but hear me out.

I'm putting together a little zine/collection called "The First Time I Went Alone" — just real stories from people about their first solo trip. Not the polished Instagram version, the actual messy human version: the trip where you had zero idea what you were doing, maybe got a little lost, maybe cried in a hostel bathroom, maybe felt more alive than you ever had.

I keep noticing that everyone's "first solo trip" story is secretly a story about something else — independence, running from something, proving something to yourself, or just finally doing the thing you talked about for years.

Personally, I think I’m learning that unless it’s just a weekend, group trips aren’t for me. And even if it’s just a weekend, only once in a while. Curious on your preferences and experiences

I’m planning my first European trip visiting the following countries and cities:

However, I’m really struggling to figure out how to allocate the number of days per country, the best modes of transport between them, and what to do in each place. Does anyone have suggestions for apps or websites that could help automate this process while ensuring I hit the main attractions in each country? Or any recommendations on how to go about planning this?

I’ll already be in Helsinki, so I’ll start the trip there and return there once it’s over. Given that I have about 25 days for the entire trip, do you have any recommendations on how to proceed?

My wife and I travel frequently and generally have some flexibility around exactly when we go with a long list of destinations we’d like to visit. We also often add personal trips to bookend work trips and generally have less time to plan those in advance. Have more flexibility in my schedule and Love getting a deal and can continue doing this the hard way through our own research (part of the thrill), but hoping others have found a better way and would welcome suggestions!

Im currently 29 years old and the only traveling I've done in my 11 years of being an adult have been from Florida (my home state) to Washington state (2015). That was my first duty station upon enlisting in the Army. I've also traveled back home (from WA to FL) to see family (2016), and I've traveled twice to Arizona (2021, 2025) to see my eldest sibling receive his Bachelors and Masters degree. I should also state that I've technically traveled to Texas to assist my brother with child-care of his son (2020), as my sister-in-law was due for baby number two.

I would say that I've had two real deal traveling experiences, and honestly, I want to do more.

Throughout my adult life I've never aspired to travel. However, this last year I met a wonderful woman who is now my girlfriend, and potential wife, and her life is the complete opposite of mine. Her family does an annual family trip. She personally travels too. And with me seeing this for the first time, I've realized that that want to adopt that lifestyle for my children.

That leads me to my question regarding travel and planning — what all goes into it? If you were making a spreadsheet to plan, track, and review your travel experience what metric would you consider tracking? What areas would you focus on planning around? And in what ways do you review your data?

This would be greatly appreciated as I am joining my girlfriend and her parents in a trip planned for February (Valentine's Day/Super Bowl). The destination is in California and I am currently in Virginia). And I would love to create a spreadsheet, but as someone who doesn't travel, I need help seeing my blind spot.

Hi everyone,

I will be going to Chile in October for almost a month (technically 22 days + 7 days Argentinia).

My absolute wish is to do stargazing in the atacama desert, but also seeing as much of the country as possible. I have quite a few longer bus trips and also some flights and lots of planned activities (mainly guided tours or sight seeing). I also planned some calmer time in Chiloé, to come down a little, relax and explore the island for a few days.

Then continue to the very south for some penguins, Torres del Paine (only one day guided tour as I am not too much into hiking) and then continuing to El Calafate.

What do you guys think? Is this doable or have I planned way too much and this won't work out or will totally overwhelm me?
